General Gaming / Educational Gaming?
« on: December 14, 2013, 05:45:10 AM »
I'm starting on a new idea for a book, one where I examine the realm of educational gaming, mostly PC, since that's what I grew up with, and comparing that to my experiences going back to those games as an adult, in addition to games that I never experienced as a kid. I want to see whether these games actually hold up and could still be used as teaching tools to children today, or whether the breach between generations has been stretched to far by advancing technology.

Are there any games that stick out in your mind? I know someone's going to bring up Mario is Missing and that lot, but I'm thinking more widespread. So far, I have Carmen Sandiego, Jumpstart, Reader Rabbit, and ClueFinders. Maybe throw Timon and Pumbaa Typing in there for a laugh.

General Gaming / Resident Evil Marathon for Child's Play?
« on: February 25, 2012, 04:49:27 PM »
Hey guys,

With Resident Evil 6 being released later this year, I had an idea. What if the forums were able to come together and marathon through every previous Resident Evil game, and do so for Child's Play? I think that it would be a good way to celebrate where the series has come from and what it had evolved into, and also to raise money for a great cause. Let me know if anyone else would be at all interested in starting to piece together what this marathon might look like/what we would have to throw together to get it to work.

« on: December 05, 2011, 11:19:33 PM »
Yep. You read that right. I found one on eBay in its original box, with two controllers, and 11 games. All for around $60. When I have more funds, I'm planning to grab the Action Replay thing that'll let me play import games. What the hell did I just get myself into?!?

General Chat / College Applications
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:07:40 PM »
Hey all,

So I'm currently in the process of applying to 17 colleges. (Yes, I know I'm completely crazy. Friends have already informed me of this.) Is there anyone else here who is also applying for college this year, and if so, what schools are you looking at?

Reader Reviews / Project Backlog 2.0
« on: July 01, 2011, 10:23:55 PM »
Sorry if I steal a little of your thunder KMJ, but I'm doing basically the same thing this summer. Now I already know that some of these 31 odd games are not good. However, I for one reason or another possess them, and am therefore going to finish them. Comment on the dismal state my backlog has become after two years of almost exclusively playing Guitar Hero/Rock Band if you wish. I'll be taking a brief hiatus from those and try to knock out as many of these as possible, during the breaks I have between working on college apps. Chrono Trigger would appear on this list, but my DS, with the cart inside, was stolen.. :(

Nintendo Gaming / Wario Land 3 NFR Cart Value?
« on: June 27, 2011, 03:10:32 PM »
Hey guys,

While I was out today, I picked up a Not For Resale Demo Cart of Wario Land 3 for around $5. I was wondering if it was worth anything more than that, or if it would just be something else to add to my collection.

Thanks

General Chat / Help in Calculus?
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:56:31 PM »
Hey guys,

Just got into differential equations, and I need some help if possible.

Assume that heat is supplied at a constant rate, R. The rate at which heat is stored is directly proportional to the rate of change in temperature. Let T be the number of degrees above room temperature. Let t be the elapsed time, in seconds, since heat was applied. Then the storage rate is C(dT/dt). The proportionality constant, C, (calories per degree) is the heat capacity of the heater materials. According to Newton's Law of Cooling, the rate at which heat is lost to the room is directly proportional to T. The (positive) proportionality constant, h, is called the heat transfer coefficient.

a. The rate at which heat is supplied to the heater is equal to the sum of the storage rate and the loss rate. Write a differential equation that expresses this fact.
How exactly do I do this? And help possible will be great.
Thanks

I'm looking to over the next few months basically catch up on as many comics as I can read. What series would you all recommend I include in my search?

General Chat / College
« on: March 07, 2011, 02:16:48 PM »
It's about time for me to start looking at/applying for college, since I start my Senior year in 6 months (holy ****... :P: ) So I'm wondering where did you all go to college, and what made you choose it over your other options?

General Chat / Teen Jeopardy!
« on: March 01, 2011, 08:40:07 PM »
20 minutes away from taking the first test to try out for Teen Jeopardy this year. Let's do this thing!
When I was like 12, I made it into the top 100 in the country for Kid's Jeopardy, so I'm pretty sure I can make it to the second round this year.

General Chat / Playing Guitar
« on: February 26, 2011, 03:26:06 PM »
Hey guys,

I've just recently decided to finally pick up my guitar that I've had for a few years and teach myself how to play. I'm working on learning Pink Floyd and Beatles music, among other things. Anyone else here play guitar, and if so, what do you like to play?

General Chat / Vintage Toy Pricing Help
« on: February 13, 2011, 06:50:47 PM »
Hey guys,

After digging through my grandparents' basement, I've come across a few boxes of old stuffed animals, many in their original packaging. I want to sell them, but am wondering if you guys know about where I can find out how much they are worth.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

General Chat / Major League Soccer

While I love football and baseball like everyone else, I wonder if anyone else here enjoys watching MLS as much as I do. About 30 minutes ago, my Seattle Sounders FC just became the first team to win two Open Cups back to back since the 1980's.

Nintendo Gaming / Chris Kohler and Shaq-Fu
« on: September 06, 2010, 02:02:29 PM »

Yesterday afternoon at PAX, I attended the Retronauts live podcast. During that show, they had a running contest for the best piece of retro gaming that someone had on them at that moment. From what I could see, a copy of SOTN for Saturn won. When it was my turn to speak, dressed as Dr. Horrible, I first plugged RFN, as was necessary. Then, I asked whether there could also be a contest for the worst piece of retro gaming that someone had. I then pulled out of my front pocket a copy of Shaq-Fu for the SNES. I won that contest and proceeded to have Chris Kohler sign it for me. He can now say that he has signed a copy of Shaq-Fu, and I now have his autograph.

General Gaming / PAX Prime Planning Thread
« on: August 18, 2010, 12:51:40 PM »
Hey everyone,

As I mentioned about a month ago, I will be attending PAX Prime this year. I know at least two others from the forums will be attending, but there are probably more as well. I have created this thread so we can see who will be there and eventually plan a meeting during the event.

Nintendo Gaming / A Challenge to Mr. Lindemann
« on: August 08, 2010, 01:08:50 PM »
Mr. Site Director,

It has once again come to my attention that one of your games of shame is Super Mario Bros. 3. It is the same for me, as I have never played the game. However, I have bought a NES Game Pak of it, and will begin playing it shortly.
Therefore, I challenge you to complete the game before me. Neither of us have played it extensively, but hopefully we both will shortly.

Will you accept my challenge?

General Gaming / Retro Console Purchase Update
« on: August 03, 2010, 12:02:47 PM »
Just to recap:

I have never played any games on the NES, SNES, Genesis, or N64. I recently bought a Gamecube and a GBA, so I have started to play some of the console games from the last generation and some of the older handheld games. Because of MegaByte's recommendation, I found a RetroN 3 on Amazon with five other games.

Super Mario Bros. 3
Gradius
Zelda 2
Dragon Warrior
Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde

Other than the final game, these are some of the better examples on different genres of games on the NES. Now that I have decided on a console, and the fact that I want to play as many different games as I can, what are some of your recommendations?

General Gaming / Games Of Shame
« on: July 26, 2010, 02:27:04 PM »
This month, I have compiled a list of the games that I have neglected to play for one reason or another. Starting with Super Mario Land, I will go through the history of Nintendo and play these great or not so great games.

Super Mario Land
Metroid II
Metroid Prime
Luigi's Mansion
Castlevania: Sotn

I have decided to leave it at five games for now, just so I can concentrate on beating these games without other video game distractions, such as Rock Band.

What are your top five games on your wall of shame? Is there any chance these will be removed any time soon?

Nintendo Gaming / Which Retro Console Should I Buy?
« on: July 18, 2010, 02:07:03 PM »
PAX Prime is quickly approaching, and as always, there is certain to be a booth selling hundreds of retro games and consoles, all refurbished and working once again. I realize that in the long run, Virtual Console would be cheaper, but I do not have a Wii and will probably never get one unless I buy it from one of my friends for much less than retail price.

Now on to the actual question.

I would like to own an older console with a few games to play on it, but I can't make up my mind. If the forums could help me decide, that would be great.
I also already own a copy of The Lion King on SNES, but don't have the ability to play it yet.

General Gaming / PAX Prime 2010
« on: July 12, 2010, 03:02:33 PM »
I just bought my three day passes for PAX Prime this year, and I was wondering if anyone else in the forums was planning to attend. Also, are there still plans for another live podcast? Because of school and money issues, there was no way I could get myself to Boston for that weekend. It would be great to finally get to meet some of the people I have been getting to know on these forums and through RFN.

NWR Forums Discord / I Need an New Avatar and Tag-You Pick It
« on: July 07, 2010, 01:57:41 PM »
Since Portal 2 has been struck by Valve Time, I think it's time for me to change my avatar and to actually have a tag. However, I have no idea what to change it to, so I decided to let the funhouse choose for me. I can take a joke, so whatever you vote to be the best, I will change it to for a while. It worked (I guess) for BlackNMild2k1, so it will hopefully work for me too.

My friends and I are planning a Friday the 13th Movie Marathon thing, and I was wondering if you had any favorite scary movies that were either really good or so horrible that they were hilarious. Eight legged Freaks need not apply, as my best friend is absolutely terrified of spiders.
