Next-Gen On-Line emulation takes a 360...

Well, we all know about the Revolution's emulated downloads of older Nintendo games... but this is the first I've heard about this...

A Real Arcade...
Coming Soon to a Living Room Near You
Of those of you who own an Xbox right now, how many use Live Arcade?  Anyone?  Bueller?  Yeah, I thought so.  You have to buy a hard-to-find disc to even access Live Arcade and then you have to play between $10 and $20 to play some rinky-dink game like Dig Dug.  Yawn.  That's all about to change, though: The Xbox 360 will have Live Arcade integrated right into the box, and it will pop up on the home page of the dashboard; hit a button, and you're in like Flynn.  You don't even need a Live account... or a credit card to browse, buy, and play freely.  But will there be anything worth playing?  We're breathless with anticipation.  We got the inside scoop from Greg Canessa, group manager of Xbox Casual Games, who says that while the lineup hasn't been offically set in stone yet, there will be a wide variety of titles and styles, from quirky independents to big names to spiffed-up retro classics from consoles of a bygone era.  The Atari 2600, Turbo Grafix, Sega Saturn... even the Dreamcast were mentioned.  Dare we dream?  Next-gen Live Arcade sounds like the real thing.

So we're left wondering, does this blow our chances for SEGA games out the window?  NiGHTs on the 360 anyone?
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

I'd say the most valuable old console that MS could get exclusive rights for would be the Genesis.  Everything else is rinky-dink in comparison, at least to the average person.  The most valuable console libraries would be the NES, SNES, Gameboy, and Playstation.  MS obviously cannot get the rights to any of those.

MS can "copy" Nintendo's download idea but they lack the games to pull it off as well.  The only way I could see this beating the Rev download service is if the Rev is REALLY weird and thus no one buys it or Nintendo charges a ridiculously high price for downloads.  MS would have to rely on Nintendo screwing up a can't miss idea to gain an advantage here.

But then that's how Sony became the market leader so maybe it's not such a bad plan.

While we're on the subject, anyone heard of Game Tap?

It's being put out by the Turner group (owners of CNN, TBS, Cartonn Network, Sports Illustrated, etc).  It's going to be a flat monthly rate for unlimited game downloads from past to current gens.
Quote

Turner's strategy is to create an online subscription service scheduled for launch this year. Called GameTap, the service will be presented as if it was a television cable channel — with original programming centered on game news and including reviews and talk shows hosted by "game jockeys."

Quote

Subscribers, who pay a monthly fee of $10 to $20, would have access to an unlimited number of games streamed to their computers via a broadband connection. Turner, which bought licenses to distribute 1,000 titles from 17 game publishers, will start with a slate of 300 games, adding five to 10 titles a week.

But the games won't be the latest installment of "Doom" or "Half Life." Instead, they'll be previously released games such as "Pac-Man," "Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater 2," "Sonic 3" and "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory."

I saw Game Tap being advertised at a concert I went to about a week ago and checked it out when I got home.  I doubt that it will really catch on, but who knows.  I wasn't terribly intrigued.

I think that Nintendo should really push for Sega to jump on board with their download service.

But that MS download thing kinda sucks. I wonder if Sony will do anything like this?

Actually, the Live Arcade has been on XBox Live for sometime now.
Sony and Nintendo are just beginning to catch up to this.

Yeah, Sega will probably jump on the MS bandwagon and no XBox owner will buy their games. Sega must love pain or something.

I really think they mispoke on Dreamcast games.  I don't care how fast the internet is getting I am not downloading a 1Gig game to play.

There are several arcade games that Microsoft COULD get, however most of those arcade games were also released on the NES and SNES systems so I could see the companies supporting both.  Obviously, the arcade games that used franchises like the Turtles or Simpsons will be harder to get.

All in all, I really doubt this thing will hurt Nintendo, and if Sega does in fact bed Microsoft instead of Nintendo, they are being foolish.  Revolution will attract more retro gamers that would be more likely to buy their games.

As for Sony doing this with their library....like I said with the DS games.  I am not willing to wait for a CD length game to be downloaded to play.

I think the strong Square-Enix support is a better deal with games such as Chrono Trigger possibly appearing.  Sega isn't owned by MS so we can get Nights.  That is if Sega is willing.  The Rev controller can't be too weird.  That depends on the person.  Well too bad too many people have to take on other opinions.  It is supposed to be made to play NES, SNES, and N64 games.  Although I would accept a seperate controller for that.

Neo-Geo games are 100 megaBIT shockers, not megabyte.  They're like really huge SNES games.  They're not very big at all.

Eh? The PS3 is already backwards compatible with both the PS2 and the PSX, downloading isn't necessary.

I really hate computer lingo, because its all too similar to eachother.

IceCold:  Is PS3 compatiable with PSone games?  I didn't know that.  I figured PS2 was a given but not PSone

I'm wounding if the revolution could use bit torrent to downlaod? It could make downloading cd super fast and if it could than why not?

I know you reading this forum reggie so make it happen it will cut the cost of downloading game by a large % so do it!

The largest Neo Geo game is around 78 to 80MB tops, nothing broadband can't handle.

Bit Torrent is only faster when you are downloading from someone who would otherwise have a limited bandwidth and a lot of peers (they have a slow connection, and a ton of people want the file). I would imagine that Nintendo would be able to afford a VERY fast connection, and would be able to send data faster than you would be able to receive it. Besides, if it were a torrent than it would require the gamer to upload the game he just bought to other people, which is just silly.

150,000,000 [150megs] divided by 625,000 [5 Megabits per second] gives me 240 seconds...4 minutes at a very generous and steady 5megabits.

Grant: No, 150 megs (Megabits) / 5Mb/s = 30 secs. Console manufacturers inflated their specs by counting bits instead of bytes. Though 1 Megabit/s is already more than most people have.

You sure? I knew they did that with cartridge games, but I've never seen an SNK game and just assumed they came on Cd's. Well, I sit corrected but I still stand by the Bit Torrent thing.
