TalkBack / Freaky Flyers: Two Discs
« on: August 06, 2002, 10:28:18 AM »
Why two discs you say?  It's not just the game that takes up the space.

In speaking with the game's producers at the Midway Gamers' Day, Planet GameCube learned that Freaky Flyers will be the next GameCube title to be spread out over two discs.

Each character has a separate storyline that has accompanying FMV.  Due to the fact that Freaky Flyers will include a whopping 90 minutes of FMV, they needed the extra space to cram all the video in.

More details to follow in our extensive preview.

TalkBack / Doom II now official
« on: August 06, 2002, 08:55:10 AM »
We've had screens and a profile up for a couple days, but now Activision finally sets the record straight.  Did someone say Co-op?

ID SOFTWARE'S LEGENDARY ACTION GAME DOOM II(tm) soon to hit GAME BOY® ADVANCE

Mesquite, TX - Aug. 6, 2002 - The ultimate battle is in the palm of gamers' hands with the development of id Software's DOOM II(tm) for the Game Boy® Advance.  Published by Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), the game is a joint development effort by id Software(tm) and Torus Games, and follows the epic saga of one marine against the demon hordes of hell with non-stop action, terrifying enemies, fluid graphics, and outstanding multiplayer carnage.

"DOOM II is a gaming icon and a must-play for any game fan," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "Whether you prefer taking on the hell-scum alone, cooperatively with a friend, or going head-to-head in deathmatch, DOOM II is the perfect handheld action-fest."

DOOM II takes the terror planet side as the entire forces of the netherworld have overrun Earth.  As the lone survivor of a doomed mission, players must make use of an awesome array of deadly weapons and descend into the stygian depths of Hell itself to rid Earth of the invading demon horde.

Like the original PC game, players must blast their way through over 30 levels filled with 17 unique and deadly enemies.  To help push back the scourge, players will have access to nine different weapons including the legendary chainsaw, double barrel shotgun and BFG.  Additionally, DOOM II supports co-operative play so gamers can team-up to rid the world of hellspawn, or go head-to-head with up to four other players in classic Deathmatch mode where it's every marine for himself.

id - Freud's primal part of the human psyche and one of the hottest game shops on Earth - has been rocking the gaming world from Mesquite, Texas since 1991.  As a renowned leader in the industry, id Software forged such frenetic titles as Wolfenstein 3D®, DOOM®, DOOM II(tm), QUAKE® and QUAKE II(tm).  With intense graphics and mind-blowing action, id's games have helped redefine the modern video game, continually setting industry standards for technology and gameplay.  And, in keeping with tradition, id Software has amplified the world of adrenaline pumping 3-D gaming with the release of their latest action titles, QUAKE III Arena(tm), QUAKE III: Team Arena(tm) and Return to Castle Wolfenstein(tm).  id's advanced QUAKE III Arena engine is leading the next revolution in 3-D interactive games with both single and multiplayer technology.  Check out more about id Software at www.idsoftware.com.

TalkBack / Nintendo selects new ISP
« on: August 05, 2002, 09:44:53 AM »
Nintendo's family of sites get a new home.  Note: This has nothing to do with network gaming.

Cable & Wireless Service Selected by Nintendo for Internet Services

Financial Strength Cited as Determining Factor in Re-Signing With Cable & Wireless

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cable & Wireless (NYSE: CWP - News), the global telecommunications group, today announced it has been selected by Nintendo of America Inc., top-seller of video game systems such as the Nintendo GAMECUBE, and producer of the world's #1 handheld system, Game Boy Advance, to provide Internet services for the company's Nintendo.com site through its Internet Services business, branded Exodus in the US.

A former Exodus customer, Nintendo was looking for a stable provider with significant hosting experience and staff expertise. Nintendo decided to return to Exodus based on its positive previous experience and also because as a Cable & Wireless service, Exodus is backed by the company's longevity and financial strength.

Nintendo was able to successfully migrate Nintendo.com and many other Nintendo sites like Zelda.com, gameboy.com, and gamecube.com that showcase Nintendo's products and games, from the company's former service provider within two days, without any service disruption to customers. Nintendo uses the redundant site hosted at Exodus, as a real-time business continuity site. The fully active redundant site ensures Nintendo.com remains fully accessible and retains high performance levels for customers despite any unplanned events like a natural disaster or planned events such as seasonal spikes in activity.

"Exodus has the expertise, track record and solid future we are looking for in a hosting provider," stated Dan Lambert, Network Architect, Nintendo of America. "With all of the consolidation going on in the marketplace among hosting and managed service providers, we are looking not only for technical expertise but also a company that offers longevity and financial strength. Cable & Wireless is one of the few companies that has all of the above."

During the past two months, significant change has taken place in the hosting market. Analysts believe that the rapid consolidation of the hosting market will make financial strength a more critical factor in the decision making process for customers.

According to David Willis, Vice President of Global Networking Strategies, Meta Group, "The hosting market has fundamentally changed over the past two years. The leading vendors have moved far beyond basic commodity infrastructure into high-value outsourcing services. Customers are seeking a long-term strategic partner with a global presence, a broad spectrum of services, and a strong financial position."

Marketed as Exodus in the US and Cable & Wireless in the rest of the world, Cable & Wireless offers a complete suite of Internet services including managed hosting, business continuity, managed security and managed storage services, as well as content delivery and streaming technologies. Cable & Wireless services offer customers a comprehensive set of managed and professional services ranging from simple hosting to complex outsourced Internet operations management, so businesses can leverage internal resources without having to invest in additional talent or capital expenditures.
