TalkBack / Mother 1 + 2 Announced!
« on: April 14, 2003, 08:31:21 AM »
...And 3 teased?  Oh, what's this?  The first commercial even!

Mother 1 + 2 has been announced in Japan for the GBA, and we've got the first commercial for you. (Thanks Quiter!)

The original Mother for Famicom was never released outside of Japan.  Apparently, its graphics have been slightly updated in this port.  Its SNES sequel, starring Ness, a little boy who Smash Bros. fans will recognize, was released worldwide as Earthbound and quickly became a cult hit.  Mother is highly regarded as a very funny, underrated, and unconventional RPG series.

Mother 1+2, which obviously contains both of these classic RPGs, will be released on June 20th for 4800 yen.  There's no release  date for Mother 3, but there's a teaser at the end of the commercial for this brand new game in the series.  We'll  have more information when we find our Japanese correspondent.  For now,  check out the commercial!

TalkBack / Must See Miyamoto TV
« on: April 14, 2003, 06:55:28 AM »
A new documentary about video games premiers this Wednesday night on The Learning Channel.  Did I mention that Shigeru Miyamoto will be featured?

Gameheadz Premieres on TLC on Wednesday 16th April at 10pm ET/PT

TLC presents a new documentary that tells the story of the early pioneers of the world's fastest growing entertainment industry. It's a tale of visionaries, brilliant inventors and genius hippie renegades - the story of Computer Games.

It all began with the unveiling of PONG in a local Californian tavern in 1972. Atari's founder Nolan Bushnell and Pong's creator Al Alcorn tell the story of how they created the games industry with a bunch of spare parts and an old wooden crate.

Gameheadz includes never-before-seen footage from "A Day at Atari" - a mock documentary made by Atari employees in the late seventies.

Activision founder and star designer, David Crane, explains what went wrong at Atari and how it led to the entire industry collapsing in 1983.

Ralph Baer, creator of the Odyssey system, sets the record straight on who really invented video games.

In the early Nineteen-Eighties, British teenagers revolutionised the computer games industry with games they designed at home on cheap computers - computers bought by parents to help with their homework.

Oliver Twins, Philip and Andrew, tell the story of how they sold their first game at the age of thirteen and went on to become millionaires. Their collaboration with the teenage Darling Brothers helped build one of the world's most powerful and acclaimed game publishers, Codemasters.

Nintendo filled the void left by the collapse of Atari and the American computer games industry.

Thanks to the work of its creative genius, Shigeru Miyamoto, the company became synonymous with computer games and its mascot, Mario became more famous than Mickey Mouse.

Gameheadz explains the Miyamoto phenomenon, tracing his inspirations back to a magical childhood spent exploring the Japanese countryside. Miyamoto tells the story of how an amazing series of twists of fate led to him being asked to design his first game - Donkey Kong.

A highlight for game fans in particular is Miyamoto performing the theme tune to Super Mario Bros. on his guitar.

And Miyamoto reveals how he came up with the magic formula for Zelda - the game critics said at the time was doomed to failure, but has since been acclaimed as the greatest series of computer games ever made.

Nintendo's dominance of the games industry was assured when it scooped the world rights to Russian puzzler Tetris - the most addictive game of all time.

Henk Rogers tells the story of how he travelled to Moscow in the dying months of communism, befriended the games creator Alexey Pajitnov and won the rights to Tetris against strong competition from Hungarian publisher Robert Stein and the wishes of the KGB.

Alexey Pajitnov reveals how he came up with the game that has driven a generation of children and adults alike to the brink of insanity. And this program gives viewers a rare glimpse of his original version of the game in action on a Soviet Electronica 60 computer.

VIVENDI UNIVERSAL GAMES EXPANDS THE HULK MOVIE EXPERIENCE IN THE NEXT GENERATION VIDEO GAME

Game Combines Popularity of Marvel Comic Book with Power of Theatrical Release to Create High-Impact Interactive Entertainment Action-Adventure

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - April 10th, 2003 - Vivendi Universal Games' The Hulk video game, based upon Universal Pictures' highly anticipated film version of one of Marvel Comics' most memorable and popular Super Hero® series, will street June 13, 2003 in the UK. The action-packed game is being developed by Vancouver, Canada-based Radical Entertainment for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the XboxTM video game system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCubeTM and the PC. The Valhalla Motion Pictures/Good Machine Production will hit UK theatres July 18, 2003.

With a brand new storyline set after the events of the film, The Hulk video game will deliver gamers an incredible experience beyond the movie. The game combines visuals from the original comic book illustrations with the film's remarkable digitally-created graphics and environments, along with new imagery created exclusively for the game. Players can master two types of game play as either Bruce Banner or The Hulk as they battle lead characters from the film, familiar enemies from the Marvel UniverseTM or new villains created specifically for the game. With fully destructible and interactive environments, players can virtually manipulate, destroy or use anything as a weapon. With his superhuman power fueled by rage, The Hulk can smash through any physical obstacle and annihilate his foes with over 45 devastating attacks.

"We have worked side by side with our theatrical partners to extend the Hulk experience beyond the big screen and deliver it to the hands of gamers," said Luc Vanhal, President & COO of VU Games, North America. "The movie uses CGI to create a fully-realized character onscreen and we have developed a game that brings all the power and personality of the movie character to gamers everywhere across a variety of platforms. You can expect The Hulk video game to be every bit as powerful as the film will be."

"The Hulk videogame represents a three-pronged approach in building the ultimate action Super Hero franchise - from comic book to film to interactive entertainment," said Tim Rothwell, senior vice president, Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. "Our goal is to provide fans everywhere with a massive Hulk experience that will launch in the theater and on video games screens simultaneously."

"The transition for our characters from the Marvel Universe to the interactive universe is virtually seamless and only helps to enhance the overall experience," said Russ Brown, Executive Vice President, Consumer Products, Promotions & Retail Sales, Marvel Enterprises, Inc. "The Hulk has worldwide recognition and appeal, He is one of the most physically powerful and emotionally compelling Super Hero characters ever created. By extending this franchise across these mediums we are able to create exciting new chapters in Hulk lore."

Interactive Extension of Movie Story With a brand new storyline distinct to the game and set after the events of the film, The Hulk follows the plight of troubled scientist Bruce Banner and his enraged alter ego, Hulk, as they battle against familiar enemies from the Marvel Comics world and new villains specific to this adventure. Betrayed by his long-time colleague and mentor, Professor Crawford, Bruce unwittingly releases the essence of the Hulk into an Orb, falling prey to the Leader, a villain intent on using the Hulk's energy to unleash a relentless army of "gamma" creatures. Now Bruce must pursue his new foe through San Francisco, into Alcatraz, out of heavily guarded military installations and finally to the terrifying, surreal Freehold of the Leader himself. Only by facing his own shattered identity and gaining control of the beast within him will Bruce have the ability to destroy the insane intentions of the Leader.

Dual Gameplay and Action The Hulk game allows players to master two different gameplay styles unique to both Bruce Banner and The Hulk. As Bruce Banner, the player must employ the powers of logic and stealth while struggling to contain the Hulk inside of him in order to successfully complete missions. As the Hulk, the player must power their way through 25 massive, highly-detailed and immersive environments, directly inspired by the film and exclusive to the game. They will face five intense boss battles, smash up to 10 enemies at once and destroy foes with over 45 devastating attacks.

Real-World Simulation While the player controls the incredible power and rage of the Hulk, objects react to damage as they would in the real world, displaying behaviors consistent with the real effects of mass, matter and gravity. For example cars bounce off walls to show body damage, glass shatters, broken pipes roll. The smashing gameplay is enhanced as virtually any object can be manipulated, destroyed or used as a weapon.

About The Hulk Film Universal Pictures presents in association with Marvel Entertainment Group a Valhalla Motion Pictures/Good Machine Production of an Ang Lee film, The Hulk. Acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee's concept for his film adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics series, The Incredible Hulk, combines all the elements of a blockbuster visual effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films. In depicting The Hulk as both a superhero and a monster, a wish fulfillment and a nightmare, Lee and his team have stayed true to the subversive spirit of the classic comic book character while completely updating The Hulk and projecting him into the dangers and aspirations of contemporary times.

Eric Bana stars as scientist Bruce Banner, whose inner demons transform him in the aftermath of a catastrophic experiment. Bana plays both the human Banner and - through groundbreaking visual effects technology provided by the Oscar -winning Industrial Light and Magic - the superhuman Hulk. Jennifer Connelly portrays Betty Ross, whose scientific genius unwittingly helps unleash The Hulk; Nick Nolte plays Banner's brilliant father, who unwittingly passes on a tragic legacy to his son, and Sam Elliot portrays the commander of a top-secret military research center.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.– April 8th, 2003 – Vivendi Universal Games announced today that hard rock front man (Black Flag, Rollins Band), actor ("The Chase," "Johnny Mnemonic") and spoken word artist Henry Rollins has signed on to voice the role of Mace Griffin in the upcoming video game "Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter." The sci-fi action game will be available second quarter 2003 for the XboxTM video game system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and Nintendo GameCubeTM.

Over the past decade, Rollins' career has branched out from music to include spoken word tours, including an upcoming Spoken Word DVD out this fall, the authoring of numerous books and journals for his own 2.13.61 publishing label, and appearances in a diverse array of TV and film productions, from hosting MTV specials to his upcoming movie "Bad Boys 2."

The player will assume the role of an ex-Special Ops officer, Mace Griffin. Against a backdrop of corporate, political and religious intrigue, Mace Griffin is framed for being involved in his comrades' deaths. After spending time in prison, he becomes a bounty hunter, a vocation that gives him access to classified information and a means to aggressively pursue his search for the people who framed him. The game itself is a mixture of first-person action set on alien worlds and intense combat in the depths of space.

"Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter," developed by Warthog, will have a suggested retail price of $49.99 and an ESRB rating of "M" for Mature.

Strong Sales Surge for Nintendo

Overwhelming Demand for Zelda, Pokemon and Game Boy Advance SP Driving U.S. Video Games Market

REDMOND, Wash.--April 4, 2003--Riding the crest of three hit product launches, Nintendo of America Inc. currently claims the best selling console game, the best selling portable games, and the best selling hardware system in America.

Since coming to market within a week of each other in late March, The Legend of Zelda(R): The Wind Waker(TM) for Nintendo GameCube(TM), Pokemon(R) Ruby Version and Pokemon(R) Sapphire Version for Game Boy(R) Advance, and the new flip-top, front-lit Game Boy(R) Advance SP portable system have leaped to the top of their respective sales charts.

The new Zelda game set a Nintendo record with more than 600,000 copies pre-sold to consumers before its March 24 launch date, and retailers now are quickly burning through the entire initial North American shipment of 1.1 million games. In the same period, sales rates for Nintendo GameCube hardware have jumped 20 percent.

With more than 4.4 million copies of Pokemon already shipped in Japan, more than 2.2 million games have now moved through to North American retailers, showing conclusively Pokemon is back with an exclamation point. The companion Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire titles have dominated portable software since their launch on March 17.

Finally, 800,000 Game Boy Advance SP units have blown through to North American retail, matching equally raucous receptions in Japan and Europe.

"While no one will know the champion of this season's college basketball tournament until next week, the winner of this spring's video game tournament is Nintendo," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "Game Boy Advance SP, Zelda and Pokemon represent a three point play that players and retailers dream about."

"At what is traditionally a slow time of the year for video games, Nintendo has seized the sales initiative," says Richard Simone, video game buyer, Toys "R" Us. "With their blockbuster products Game Boy Advance SP, The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon, they're a big part of why video games are one of the truly bright spots at retail."

As the worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd. of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home video game systems. The systems include Game Boy(R), Nintendo(R) 64, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube. Since Soul Calibur 2 isn't releasing until the fall in North America, it's been one of the hottest selling import games this year.  Currently, most stores are completely sold out.

TalkBack / Want To Buy The Wind Waker Soundtrack?
« on: March 28, 2003, 10:47:56 AM »
We've been playing it for over a week and getting lots of e-mails from interested parties.  So where can you import this soundtrack?  UPDATED: Now Shipping!

UPDATE: Video Game Depot has gotten enough pre-orders to warrant carrying the CD, and sent out their first shipment of soundtracks last week. There are some left in stock, so if you've been holding back, now's your chance.

I have gotten truckloads of e-mails from people who want to get their hands on the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker soundtrack that we've been playing.  It was released in Japan last week, but it's nearly impossible to import.  And no, you don't need a special CD player.

So I contacted our import partners Video  Game Depot and had them see if they could get some in stock.  Today they've informed me they are taking pre-orders for the soundtrack, and if they get enough pre-orders for the soundtrack, they'll be able to carry them.

Very good news for people who want to import this gem!

TalkBack / Disney Meets Tony Hawk
« on: March 24, 2003, 05:00:00 AM »
If you're going to use technology for a skateboarding game, it might as well be the Tony Hawk Engine...

ACTIVISION USES TONY HAWK'S PRO SKATER VIDEO GAME ENGINE TECHNOLOGY TO POWER DISNEY PICTURES' PRESENTATION OF PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS "TOY STORY 2," "DISNEY'S THE LION KING," AND "DISNEY'S TARZAN " CHARACTERS INTO SKATEBOARDING PROS

Also Allows Players to Create Their Own Personalised Skater

London, UK - March 20, 2003 - Activision Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and Disney Interactive today announced a new video game that gives skateboarding a magical twist. Designed to appeal to children and teens ages 6 - 14, Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure will use cutting-edge technology from Activision's latest Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 engine to allow characters from three beloved animated films: Walt Disney Pictures' presentation of Pixar Animation Studios' "Toy Story 2," "Disney's Tarzan " and "Disney's The Lion King" to skateboard just like the pros in their respective worlds for the first time. In addition to these characters, the new game includes a Create-A-Skater option where players can customize a youthful skater's "look" by selecting clothing and accessories. Furthermore, as an Activision first, the company is holding a nationwide casting call search for 10 real kids who will become digitised characters in the game.

"At Activision our goal is always to couple the best gameplay experience with all the properties we have, whether the game is based on a professional athlete, a movie or kid-oriented characters," said Kathy Vrabeck, executive vice president, global publishing and brand management, Activision, Inc. "Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure" takes all of the professional moves and realistic skateboard experience of our best-selling Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 game and gives these well-loved characters new adventures as skateboarders in their traditional environments. We are also very excited about the Create-A-Skater feature that allows our consumers to create unlimited hours of personalized fun."

"By working with innovative leaders in the industry, we are able to create great games that reflect the true spirit of the films," said Sanjeev Lamba, vice president of marketing and international, Disney Interactive. "We're pleased to continue our ongoing relationship with Activision on Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure which gives some of our beloved movie characters entirely new adventures in skateboarding."

Skate Like A Pro - Disney Style

Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure is the first time Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Walt Disney Pictures' presentation of Pixar Animation Studios' "Toy Story 2," Young Tarzan and Terk from "Disney's Tarzan" and Simba and Rafeeki from "Disney's The Lion King" have been showcased in the same video game. Players skate as their favourite characters, performing moves such as ollies, rail grinds, spins and other expert balance moves. The characters from the film can skate through each of their worlds, such as Simba and Rafeeki in Pride Rock, Young Tarzan and Terk in Tarzan's Treehouse and Buzz Lightyear and Woody in Pizza Planet, and interact with the other characters that live in those worlds. The game also provides an abundance of fun factor and offers players skateboards that resemble bamboo rafts, frying pans and other non-traditional items. Beyond the skateboard challenge there are puzzles to solve, secret areas to explore and collectibles to find on each level of the game.

The game is in development for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and Nintendo GameCube and will feature 12 playable characters to choose from as well as diverse gameplay modes that include Adventure Mode, where gamers complete goals as their favourite characters, or as a real world character from the Create-A-Skater feature. The game also features a Multiplayer option for split-screen competition.

The game is also being developed for Game Boy Advance and will feature six playable characters to choose from and three gameplay modes: Story, to unlock new levels by completing goals; Single Session, to achieve high scores; and Multiplayer, to engage in head-to-head competition.

Create-A-Skater

In addition to being able to skate throughout multiple universes, gamers will start off in a real world locale where they can Create-A-Skater and customize their skater with everything from different clothes, hair color and styles (such as Mohawks), shoes, helmets and boards. In addition to customizing, players will be able to encounter real world elements such as fast food restaurants, different clothing brands and styles and other popular culture references.

Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure will be available late summer for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance. This game as not yet been rated by the ELSPA.
