TalkBack / Re: Miiverse Ending Service On November 8

Important note: You can go to Miiverse and request that Nintendo sends you an archive of the posts and screenshots you've made.

They could have avoided all this by giving us actual voice chat with the Switch itself rather than outsourcing it to smartphone apps...

53
Will participating in the Splatfest earn you anything?

Also, Marina >>>>>>>>>> Pearl. Not even close, like Callie vs Marie.

Indeed.

Scalpers are going to have a field day with this.  The sheer stupidity of how Nintendo handled the NES Classic has me totally apathetic to this.  The lack of DKC2 and 3 is also a bit disappointing.

I wish they kept the wool aesthetic. :(  Not much to say other than that, though: I can't really imagine the two-side gimmick changing things up much.

My arms got sore after an hour of motion control.  I performed equally well with normal and motion controls in the demo, so I may end up switching between the two.

The art style looks like a cross between Puyo and Panel de Pon.  The gameplay itself didn't look that enticing in the trailer, though.

TalkBack / Re: The Switch Pro Controller's D-Pad Dysfunction
« on: June 07, 2017, 01:13:12 PM »
Yeah, I noticed the awful D-Pad with Puyo Puyo Tetris.  To be honest, I sort of saw it coming due to Zelda, where I'd often open up the hi-tech special things rather than my standard weapons.  PPT is unplayable with the thing, though, since tapping up immediately drops a piece.  I hope Nintendo somehow addresses this issue.

The grips are kind of ugly.  I think they should have made them black, but with colorful ink splats in many spots.

I was disappointed by how quickly I stopped finding fair matches in Pokken online, so I'm glad we all have the chance to start fresh with a deluxe version of it.  I'm still sticking with my pal Pikachu, though!

I just finished Pokemon Sun, though.  I don't really want an alternate version of a story-oriented game.

I take it the original Japanese voices aren't an option?

Anyway, I liked Disgaea 1 and 2, but why do these games have to be so darn long?  I'm thinking of getting back into the series, but I don't know if I really have the time to complete this.

Ironically enough, I'm finding the Joycon Grip to be the best option for play.  When I tried the Pro Controller, I kept pressing up by accident and doing a "hard drop" in Tetris, sometimes repeatedly.  But there are a lot of control options.

Anyway, I'm loving it so far! :)

Now if only they'd update the game with a more reasonable price, I'd get it!

TalkBack / Re: Mini Super Nintendo Classic Releasing In 2017?
« on: April 21, 2017, 03:54:57 PM »
Fishy.  I don't see why the NES Classic would "have to" die for this.  Surely both gizmos could exist side-by-side.  Plus, I thought Nintendo was making a big deal out of the SNES support for the Switch.

Seems pretty self-explanatory to me... it isn't like they have unlimited resources. If they already had production pre-scheduled for a SNES Classic on top of the newly launched and highly in demand Switch, then their hands were already tied by the time the NES Classic became such a runaway success. Besides, this is likely part of a bigger plan they've set in motion to test the market for stand alone legacy systems to determine whether or not to continue the current Virtual Console model on Switch... I highly doubt it's coincidental that they've been so quiet about VC games for Switch and have NeoGeo titles on the Switch eShop without the "Virtual Console" label. What would REALLY be fishy is if they ended NES Classic production without something like this in the pipeline.

Maybe I just somehow missed that news... the last I was aware, Nintendo hadn't said a word about VC games on Switch period, let alone pledge support for SNES games. Can you cite a source? If not, are you sure you're not just thinking of the relatively new SNES VC support on the New 3DS?

A huge company like Nintendo could surely produce more of these little consoles if they wanted to.  If they seriously lacked the resources to do so, and if there were already an SNES Classic planned, they could delay it until meeting the demand for the NES Classic.  But, really, I think all these "shortages" are mostly ways for Nintendo to get free advertising and pressure people into buying things quickly before they disappear.

Also, Nintendo's online service will allow you to rent SNES games on the Switch with online play enhancements.  Look that up yourself.

Personally, I'd rather see Nintendo distill information at a smooth, steady pace rather than stay quiet for months and then suddenly dump a lot of info at once.

TalkBack / Re: The Positives and Pitfalls of Review Democratization

Tangentially related question, but do consumers really use metacritic? I feel like that website, along with things like Rotten Tomatoes are more commonly sourced by the industry itself and "reception" sections on Wikipedia articles, than by actual individuals.

If I'm on the fence about a game, I'll read a few reviews conveniently compiled there.  I pick some of the higher scores, some of the middle scores, and some of the low scores to get a wide variety of perspectives.  I then decide whether or not the good outweighs the bad.

But I don't do things based on an aggregate score alone!

I agree that removing the really "out there" reviews would help averaged scores be more accurate.  I'm sure that's an important issue to many people, especially developers, like you mentioned.

Personally, though, I think review scores are WAY too skewed toward the positive, and that's the bigger issue for me.  Rather than have 5/10 be the average since that's in the middle of the scale, I'd say about 90% of games get at least a 6/10.  Heck, Game Informer once said in a certain review, "you’ll enjoy turning this game off more than you enjoy any aspect of its gameplay," but gave the game a 5/10.  Games rarely go that low or lower unless they're totally glitchy messes. Why have a huge chunk of the review scale that you only use when bashing garbage?  So, really, when it comes to great games, we end up bickering over whether a score should be an 8-point-something or a 9-point-something.  The scores are borderline useless.  However, Metacritic keeps calling 70/100 "average," so reviewers are going to maintain the status quo there.

I don't pay much attention to review scores.  I read the content of various reviews (some high, some middle, some low) and make my decision based on what I think of what I've read.  I also use my intuition: if a game's not making me excited, I stay away from it, even if I can't explain why it's not jibing with me.  In the past, I sometimes bought games with super-high review scores even if I didn't truly feel enticed by them, and I usually regretted it.

But anyway, that was an interesting article.  Back in the day, I only had Nintendo Power's reviews (and my own whims) to go off of.

How well do the Wii Remotes work for the Wii U version as compared to the JoyCons for the Switch?  The U version is just $24 versus the $50 Switch, so I think I'll test that out if the controls are comparable.

I've long exercised using the Wii Fit series.  After reading this review, I think I want to try this game out: I haven't played any entry in the series yet.  The soundtrack doesn't sound that appealing, but I do like the dance exercises in Wii Fit U, so I might enjoy this anyway.

It looks kind of tough in the video... Are you expected to be using both hands on the touch screen or multiple fingers like a piano?

If I'm on the subway, I play by holding the device with both hands and then use my thumbs to hit the diamonds. At home, I'll usually lay the Switch down and use my index fingers. You certainly could play piano style and use all your fingers. You can pretty much figure out your own preferred way of tackling the game, but using a single finger from each hand seemed pretty comfortable to me.

Okay, I can manage two fingers.  I'll keep an eye out for when this game is on sale: $25 is a little steep in my opinion.

Is fire hopping still a thing, and does the pro controller allow for tilt controls?
