Tecmo rejected Square-enix bid.

Quote
Tecmo announced a merger with Japanese game maker Koei is in the works. Today, talks between both companies commenced for a tentative merger, and an "Integrated Management Committee" was created. Both companies hope to balance each other's portfolios — Tecmo is popular in the West with its fighting franchise Dead or Alive and action series Ninja Gaiden while Koei is popular in Japan (and Asia) for its historical hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors. From the statement issued by Tecmo today.

As the game industry environment changes with high-powered hardware, portable game machines and rapid growth as well as online mobile games, the accelerating consumer needs are varied and sophisticated. The industry has intensified. Multi-platform and the importance of overseas markets is pushing the industry towards global competition.

...Under these circumstances, these two companies have excellent financial positions, strengths and the ability to take advantage of each other in order to improve profitability and solidified the foundation of a worldwide leader.

S-E will offer to buy Koei out and get two for the price of one.

"Tecmo, you have a lot of pretty okay IP's!"
"Thanks, Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Ali-"
"ARE GONE, you're working on Final Fantasy from now on"
"... :("
"And...Koei, was it?"
"HOW CAN YOU BE UNSURE OF OUR NAME, YOU OWN THE COMPANY"
"Right, right... uh, wh-what games do you even make?"
"Dynasty Warriors"
"Ugh... I mean, uh... no, sorry, I can't fake interest in that. What else 'ya got?"
"Well sometimes we put Gundam in Dynasty Warrior games, they're like totally different games!"
"You guys can work on Crystal Bearers for Wii"
"That project is still alive?"
"Nope"

....

"How did I get outside? WHY IS THE DOOR LOCKED? SQUARE-ENIX? SQUUUUARE-EEENIIIIIIIX?!"

Koei is sufficiently useless to merge with. Though perhaps the ultimate combination of uselessness would be Taito-Koei...

S-E buying Tecmo would probably result in a DOA RPG or something like that...

S-E already bought Taito, and it hasn't really resulted in any change in Taito's output from what I can tell.

DOA: Dynasty Warriors confirmed!

Neither of the two have very interesting IP's IMO.  Ninja Gaiden is about the only thing I find interesting out of both the companies...err, company.

Well to be fair Taito is making more games and a couple of them are awesome like space invaders extreme, and Space invaders get even.

With new owners, perhaps the DOA property will be properly exploited.

Actually, I take it back.  The big multiple title Space Invaders celebration is pretty Square-Enix.  Who knows whether the quality of the games has changed because of S-E, but the release strategy certainly has.

Well I think with Square's involvement Taito has a bigger budget. Sure Taito is still big in the arcade and arcade sector (Street Fighter 4 is Taito cabinets). But I'm sure Square is using Taito to bring out more Wii DS and PSP products which is a big market for square and taito since those platforms are perfect for the type of games that Taito produces.
