Double Dragon will hit the Japanese Virtual Console on the Nintendo 3DS next week.

This news comes from a recent update on the Official Nintendo website in Japan, which lists the title as being published by Arc System Works with a price tag of 400 yen. Japanese 3DS owners will be able to purchase the game starting on June 22.

I've heard of it. It's an unremarkable beat 'em up that is only noteworthy because it appeared on a system with a large percentage of poor games.

No, it's also noteworthy for being a prescient social commentary on gang violence, misogyny, economic recession, and the plight of low income blue collar workers who are unable to dodge falling stalactites.  And also for having a rockin' soundtrack.

So it's notable for everything except being a good game?

It was a product of its age.  Don't try to understand it.  Just be thankful that you live in a world in which it happened.

Oh man, Data East, just when I forgot you....

I didn't even know there was a gameboy version.  Like every other suburban kid, I had DD and DD2 on the NES.  Remember the S&M girl with the whip?  I would say that even games these days don't get that risque, but then, Duke Nukem was just released last week.

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!

DD1 and 2 were good games, you philistine!

Also Double Dragon on SNES and GBA are godlike. Battletoads Double Dragon is hilarious and fun

I have the three NES games (I think there are three), I liked the co-op in them but that was the only reason I ever played them. I also have Super Double Dragon on the SNES but I remember not liking it for some reason despite the co-op. I played Battletoads and Double Dragon with a friend on their Genesis, but it wasn't much fun due to its difficulty. That was a sign of the times though, the games had to be made difficult since they were so short. Though they didn't need to be as cheap as they are...

Ha, I figured someone would say that. I just didn't think it was any fun to have to memorize the bike sections just to get through.

Double Dragon was THE huge arcade game back in the late 80's. I remember all of my buddies were waiting on the NES version, and then it was only one player.  Just terrible.  By the time Double Dragon 2 came out for NES with two-player co-op, we were all so jaded...it just wasn't the same.

There was a time when beat'em-ups were the biggest game genre out there, I'd say probably prior to the Street Fighter era.  Once Street Fighter II came out beat'em-ups really vanished.  But there was Double Dragon, Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja, Combatribes, Streets of Rage on Genesis...every system had to have one.

Real talk, the bike section in BTDD was really easy to just through reactions, don't bring that memorization bunk

I'm not so sure about that. Isn't it notorious for being one of the most difficult games around?

No, that's Battletoads. BTDD is not nearly as difficult.

I remember thinking that the opening to Double Dragon was incredibly sexist.

I enjoyed DD2 a bit with friends.  Honestly I like a good brawler.  I like it when they have hidden depth.  Where say you have to be rythmatic with you button presses to keep a combo of hits flowing and that changes for each weapon you acquire.  When a  brawler is done right it can be a lot of fun.

Was DD the first game to prove that wailing on virtual people with a baseball bat was awesome?  'Cause that would be notable, too.

The NES version was also notable for one of the classic cheats/glitches of the 8-bit era: the invincible invisible dude in the first level.

A friend of mine beat Battletoads.  He has my undying respect.

Maybe I'm getting the games mixed up then. They all kind of blend together.
