So I finally got around to actually listening to this episode - the answer given for Number 1's bonus question is bizarrely inaccurate.

Granted, the words 'Rygar' and 'Ninja' show up on the scoreboard between quarters, but as sort of billboard ads - there are 12 teams and they're named after NFL cities (and Tecmo Bowl as Player's Association licensed).

I guessed that Terranigma would be in there based on the episode description alone - really hope that one shows up on the Virtual Console someday, I'd love to finally play it through legitimate means.

Blame the NFLPA first.  They would want payment, which would have to come out of EAs pocket.  I doubt a developer would want to pay for another developers players rights.

I personally wouldn't blame EA myself, I just wanted to point out that at least in that situation one could conceivably place some blame on them, whereas it doesn't seem to apply to Tecmo Bowl at all.

One also has to differentiate between the NFL and the NFLPA - the former represents the team and league (allowing access to team and league logos), while the latter represents the players (allowing access to player names and likenesses). Tecmo Bowl only ever had the player's association license, and since (again, as I've understood it) that license only applies to active players the presence of player names is nearly impossible to achieve even with an NFLPA license (again, look at historic team rosters on any Madden title - all numbers, no names except for more recent historic teams whose players who are still active in the NFL).

Tecmo Super Bowl had both NFL and NFLPA licenses. If it comes, player names would most certainly be dropped again (for the same reasons they were in Tecmo Bowl), but TSB's team logos could be left in if Nintendo/Tecmo aquires the NFL license, but doing so would require the permission of both EA (who has the exclusive license and might desire compensation) and the NFL (who would most definitely want compensation). I personally suspect, however, that Nintendo/Tecmo probably won't even bother to ask.

The lack of rosters has nothing to do with EA - even Madden doesn't have names for historic team rosters because (at least as I understand it) the NFLPA license only applies to active players. So unless Nintendo/Tecmo felt like negotiating with some 200+ players for their names, it wasn't happening regardless.

Now, if Tecmo Super Bowl shows up sans NFL license - blame EA.

I think Penny Arcade has made some jokes about Gamespy's service.

Prehaps it was this

It's one of those game-to-movie-to-game conversions. How lovely.

Isn't it actually a movie-to-game-to-movie-to-game conversion (The Italian Job PS Game being based off of a 1969 film starring Michael Caine)?
