General Gaming / Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core

Did anyone get this?  I am and will admit that I am, a SquareEnix whore.  I love their games I don't mind elaborate cut scenes or over the top cliche driven story plots or even character designs diseased with belts,zippers, and spiky hair that one could impale them self on.   

I never played the original FF7 because 8 was my first and I just didn't care for 7's story.  I did however watch my brother every now and then play the game so I found out most of the major plot points and I even watched Advent Children.  However,I recently picked up a brand new PSP slim and light with a copy of Crisis Core in because of all the good buzz it was getting and figured that since it was a prequel to 7 perhaps this would be a good chance to see if 7's story will stick this time.

To my surprise this is really a good game.  The battle system isn't hard or contrived, the music is gorgeous and lush, and the graphics are beautifully done while preserving the original art style.  First off Zach is SO MUCH MORE enjoyable to play as then emo sad ridden Cloud and I mean that by a FAR margin.  The story is well told and isn't forced on you so much. 

One of the best features of the game that really makes it capable of playing in short bursts are the side mission modes.  In your main menu hub at save points you are allowed to go off and just do missions which usually range from kill this boss to kill this many monsters.  The missions are short, sweet, allow for leveling up and always reward you with some good item that you can use for yourself or sell at a vendor.

Another interesting thing is Zach is pretty much who you play the whole game, there is no party system, you don't manage other characters, they don't even fight as NPC's with you. You are always alone.  What is weirder?  The game plays as an action RPG there is no time based commands either, its hack and slash all the way.  WHAT IS EVEN WEIRDER?  The fact that everything runs on a giant slot machine.  In the corner of the screen constantly running is a slot machine with all of the characters you have met in the game thus far.  Eventually a character will be lined up with 2 more of the same character and you get to perform a limit break.  Now after the 3 characters line up numbers are randomly placed with them, get 7-7-7 and you level up.  Yes, I just said you basically level up randomly by a slot machine constantly running as you fight monsters.  At first when I found this out I was kind of freaked out but then I found out that it keeps an imaginary exp system going on in the background so if you don't get three 7's in a certain amount of time the game increases your chances of landing one more and more each battle until it does happen.  Does this mean that you can get very lucky sometimes though?  Yes, there was a period once where I went through 5 ordinary monster fights and leveled up 3 times in just that short amount of time.

This game has gone way above my expectations thus far and ACTUALLY got me interested in FF7. . . for once.  My only beef with the game is that there are 2 modes of difficulty that you can start as Normal and Hard.  Seriously I am on Normal right now and it could of been labeled EASY mode.  I tried recently the Hard mode and its ridiculously over powered.  I just wish they made the Normal mode more challenging.

Nintendo Gaming / Is there a trick to lag free battles?

Seriously, I have yet to have one single playable battle today~!  I have a good internet connection~!  I have tried several times to play my brother who lives only an hour away and we both experience heavy lag, sometimes to the point where its just static images.  I talked to some people at school and both said they have had little to no lag.  What am I doing wrong?  Is this just a one time case or is it just Nintendos servers being bogged down by the huge jump in connections?

I was wrong, but The new Super Mario Bros wasn't what I was looking for either.

Mario aside though, no games are coming out to even excite me, I am waiting for Goemon at least.

Goemon I heard was mediocre and never came stateside anyways.

I just feel about this overall in the end, Nintendo was given a head start, and to me they didnt suceed all that much, yes they are way ahead in sales, but even if they had 10 million people it is not the whole handheld market, and its not that hard for numbers to switch around.  Nintendo should of put some killer titles out or waited for a better launch, they've had enough time to release a crappy launch but they could of fixed it by now with some kick ass titles.

The drought did suck and made me doubt the lineup but that year ending up being an awesome year for the DS.

I work at a gaming store and mario 64 ds is the only game selling!!!!  This is how nintendo has been, and im growing tired of their ways, i am starting to  buy their systems just for their franchises.  I have a strong feeling Revolution will be just the same way.

Well it was true at the time but both my Ds and Wii collection is roughly 70% 3rd party games.

Im still happy i bought my Ds but i am becoming increasingly really pissed at nintendo,

Being the art major I am you think I would be able to do drawings whenever I want but I don't really get time to do much with projects being crammed in such small time frames.   I figured I make a thread where I would post my artwork I have been making over break and working on.

General Chat / Buying my first HD set, I need advice

So my bday is soon approaching and I have promised myself for the past year that I will buy myself an HD set.  

I have chosen to go with LCD for its durability and I have heard nightmarish stories about Plasma so thats one of the things down.  

I decided to go with 720p/1080i just for the pure fact that this will be for my Wii, regular Dvd watching and maybe a 360 that I might pick up later in the year.  I dont really feel I need 1080p for any reason.  I might get a Ps3 in a few years but I feel ok with knowing I have a 720p.  

Next is brand choice, now I have been told to get only a Sharp or Samsung which is ok I suppose but I will explain the rest later.

I went with a 1000 dollar budget, I have saved up this money thoroughly for a year now and for a poor college student I feel spending any more than that would be a waste on my living money.  

Response time, I have been told time and time again that I need a 6ms response time or less for a really good gaming television so that my gaming sessions wont face issues with lag.

Ok so with these general guidelines I set out online to see what sort of deals I could come up with.  My deadline is approaching to buy a television and I have come up with two really good choices.  I was hoping I could show them to you guys and get some feedback about my decisions or if you think I could do better.

Now see both are priced ok but Sharp, the supposed better brand has 37 inches and 6ms time while the LG has 42 in and 5 ms time.  Is Lg any good?  Do I have to worry about much lag with the wiimote and an Lcd?  Should I go for either or reconsider altogether?

Nintendo Gaming / NO NO NOT NOW NOT WHEN IM 47 STARS IN THE GAME NOOOOOOOOOOO

Turned on my Wii today to continue more Galaxy goodness and found a Wii corrupt memory error.  

Negatives:
All game saves will be gone
All Miis are gone
All Channels and Vc games will be gone but able to redownload

Positives:
Nintendo is paying for it to ship there and back
It crapped out 2 days before the warranty expired
Nintendo is giving me an additional year warranty meaning it will be good until Nov17, 2008

This is a totally different experience from my Nintendo Ds lite issue I had in the other thread forum.  In that case Nintendo barely acknowledged my warranty and made me spend money on shipping it there.  Then once it got there I had to argue for them to fix it for free. . .

So I am slightly upset and happy about this.  Also worth mentioning was that a friend of mine's Galaxy save was on the console as well.  We just decided to play it together on his Wii via 2p co op mode to catch up where we were.

Nintendo Gaming / Super Mario Bros 3 vs Super Mario Galaxy *(WARNING WORDS)*

Every time I post in a thread I feel my posts are always short, goofy, or not all that meaningful and I never really give myself the time to make a well thought out post.  I have been having this whole Mario 3 vs Mario Galaxy thought going through my head lately and I realize this post is super wordy but I hope at least someone else reads this and feels the same as I do.

In the wake of Super Mario Galaxy coming up I have been thinking a lot why I haven’t been excited for this game or any Mario game for that matter in the past 10 years.

My favorite Mario only game I have played would be Super Mario Bros 3.   Quick story on how I got the game.  Growing up even at age 5 I was a Nintendo freak, I had Mario and Zelda décor all over my room and that is pretty much all I talked about.  My parents were not all that wealthy back then.  I remember at Christmas time writing my Santa list consisting of a 25 cent bag of chips and a bag of peppermint candies.  *yes my brain was not consumed with materialism at that age, it did in the later years tho :0*  Anyhow I woke up on Christmas morning expecting the 2 items but found an extra present underneath the tree being Super Mario Bros 3, I nearly cried my eyes out with happiness.  I really thought back then that Santa only gave you what you asked for.  Back then I had no clue on video game releases, I am not even sure if I knew the game existed at all.  Anyhow, I got super attached to the game and beat it countless times in the months following, finding every secret weapon, item, and world that I could find.  Since then I have tried every single Mario platformer released and none have come close of giving me that rush of happiness as that one time I played Mario 3.  

I know many people would say that I associated a happy day such as Christmas when I believed in Santa and associated the happy memory with the game therefore putting the game at an almost impossible standard no other could ever get however, that is wrong.  I have done a lot of thinking and comparing and I think I have reasons why the game still is superior.

Mario 3 standouts:
        -8 UNIQUE worlds
   -added items and an inventory to be used at free will prior to any level
       -inside each world were usually 10+ sub levels that ALL featured VARYING    environments and obstacles
       -Outstanding soundtrack one of Koji Kondo’s best
       -Varying paths, you rarely had to play every single sublevel you had a lot of branching paths to choose from
       -Varying power up suits immediately setting it apart from its predecessors
       -Warp whistles allowed anyone to quickly boot up the game and within a matter of minutes going to pretty much any world they                  wanted to start on
       -Great multiplayer options
       -The koopalings
       -etc

Now the games following Mario 3 were Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2 Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and The New Super Mario Brothers.  

Super Mario World
I believe Super Mario World while not innovating too much proved to be an ok successor.  I think the reason why  the game didn’t feel quite in line with Mario 3 was because of the setting.  

Quick Pros:
   -Yoshi is introduced
   -New item the feather cape

Quick Cons:
   -Lots of powerups are axed from the previous game
   -Game feels much shorter
   -Inventory axed in favor for a one item slot
   
Yoshi’s Island I will not cover because in my eyes it is a separate franchise that has yet to be improved on from the original.  To me the game has the status of Mario 3 making it the best of its series that has had several tries to recapture the original mood but failed.

Mario 64
Mario 64 actually had me drooling with excitement and actually made me forget about Mario 3 for a long time.  I really did not have many problems with this game at all.  I felt like that Nintendo was on their way to having a 3-d Mario 3 game come next game.

Quick Pros:
   -A whole Mario game brought into the 3rd dimension
   -New powerups in the form of caps
   -Varying Worlds offering lots of platforming challenges
   -Memorable characters
   -New settings that would become trademark places such as Peach’s Castle

Quick Cons:
       -Some worlds to me felt like rehashed worlds just adding longevity to the game.

Super Mario Sunshine
Ah Super Mario Sunshine a.k.a. the only Mario game I never finished.  I think most of the people on the forum have spoken about why they don’t like the game and I am with them every step of the way.

Quick Pros:
   -Beautiful graphics and graphical effects
   -Bringing Yoshi back into 3-d and playable
   -A wider set of moves because of Fludd
   -I liked a lot of the music from the game

Quick Cons:
   -Fludd takes over all powerups
   -Yoshi is back but useless
   -Being forced on this island
   -Water themed levels force levels to have less variance
   -Locals forced onto us and into their world
   -Bowser Jr
       -Tropical setting had the same effect on the music making the songs catchy but in the end forcing it to not have a lot of variance.

The New Super Mario Bros
I was extremely excited for this game and sadly hyped up myself probably too much.  Nintendo promised a very old school look and feel to the Mario Franchise taking it back to its 2-d glory days.  This time however they would bring modern Mario elements such as his 3-d moveset, enemies from newer games, and a new look for Mario.  What we ended up with in my opinion was a bland too much of the same take on Super Mario 1.

Quick Pros:
   -The game was gorgeous on the Ds
   -Nostalgia everywhere
   -Promises of new Powerups
   -8 worlds
   -Completely new music

Quick Cons:
-Two of the worlds had to be unlocked meaning you were only playing 75% of the game and to unlock the rest.
-The new powerups were completely lame and had limited to no use
-A lot of the levels in my opinion felt very samey and boring
-I found myself playing more of the mini games then investing time in the main quest because I wasn’t really all that immersed in it to begin with.
-You could find 3 secret coins in each level to use in the secret store to buy extra features but the extra features were pretty lame * I am looking at you item screen wallpapers. . . *

When I first saw Galaxy I was pumped up and ready for a new Mario title but when the excitement died down I was severely worried about being disappointed again.  Today however Nintendo showed off many videos of the game and this is why I am excited again.

   -Promise of many powerups equaling perhaps as many as
        Mario 3
   -Varied levels
   -Unique Mario charm we have yet seen in any previous titles
   -Totally new soundtrack that is completely varied and well thought out
   -New concepts blending in with classic Mario play

Mario 3 in my opinion reinvented the idea of what a Mario game SHOULD be like and I am starting to feel my heart flutter a little bit thinking that Galaxy might just do the same.

I am probably the largest fanboy of the damn series on this whole board.  Oh man I hope this increases his chances in being in brawl.



Interesting Note:

There were 2 other Kingdom Hearts titles announced, one for PsP and one for mobile cell phones.  I think its interesting that no Ps3 project was announced which either means that Normura wants to wait until Ps3 is down in price before he makes a game for the platform or that Wii might get the series pending on future sales number of the Ps3.

It’s one of those rare gems that people will not appreciate at first, but grow to love over time.  Make no mistake, Lair could very well be this generation’s “Mario 64?. With greater use of motion control than any Wii game and better graphics than any 360 game  I think it’s safe to say we have a candidate for game of the year right here.

I would of originally posted this in the Lair thread or the Sony is in trouble thread but this really deserves its own thread.  I encourage everyone else to at least visit their site and lol at the posts they make and quote some of their quotes here.  Normally I don't hate on Sony this much, I am a buyer of some of their products but please I am glad Nintendo doesnt have a defense force, sounds like something Power Rangerish.
