Nintendo Gaming / Flashbacks
« on: December 06, 2003, 03:59:06 AM »
I just the other day purchased a gameboy advance sp. I never thought I would actually use a handheld. Being in my early 30's, the thought of playing a portable unit like this actually scared me. Grow up dammit, I thought. Boy am I glad I changed my mind and made the plunge.
I am currently playing Super Mario World, and I honestly cant believe how much fun I am having playing it. I must have forgotten what these games were like, because I really dont remember them being this good. To anyone who says that games today have gotten harder, I say hogwash. Give butter bridge 1 a try and tell me how easy it is. Playing this game is giving me a sense of joy no video game has in a long long time, even my wife is playing it, the minute I put it down, she picks it up. I plan on starting a link to the past next, and fully expect the same type of result, utter gaming bliss.
As for the SP itself, what an amazing piece of hardware. So small, so easy to see and play. The damn thing is a work of genius. Anyone out there who bought an N-gage over one of these needs to have their head examined asap.

I know I will get plenty of strange looks when I am seen with this thing, but I really dont care, the sheer joy I am getting from it, should easily make up for the odd jab from my rapidly aging co-workers.

Ahhh, to be young again

Sincerely, reborn in Canada.

Reader Reviews / Madden 2004 review
« on: August 26, 2003, 02:37:33 AM »
Being a huge football fan (bordering on insane) and not having bought a Madden game since the 2002 version, picking up the 2004 edition was a no brainer. I have now had the game since its release here in the great white north and have decided to share my feelings on it.

WHATS NEW

There are plenty of new features available in the 2004 version that I have not a had a chance to become fully familiar with, but in short the new features, especially the Playmaker control feature seem to really add a new demension of reality to an already realistic game of football. Another new feature is the OWNER mode, which I will come back to after a month or so playing with it.

GAMEPLAY 9/10

The gameplay is classic Madden with a few tweaks that have helped correct some of the flaws from the previous versions. It gives the game a great sence of realism without making it seem to arcade like. The contol scheme is also pretty standard for a Madden game, the only drawback is having to memorize far to many controller set-ups depending on what side of the ball you are on.

GRAPHICS 8/10

Although improved slightly from my last version, they are still a tad blocky and the player animations/movements could be a little smoother. The game also has some serious slowdowns when a lot of players are getting in on a tackle. The atmosphere the field graphics create is awesome however and make the game a joy to watch.

SOUND 6.5/10

Not much new here, pretty much your standard grunt and groan football score. Madden and Micheals are faily listenable thought they become far to repetative after about 10 games. As for the soundtrack it is far to rap based for my tastes.

VALUE 9/10

It looks like I cound enjoy this game for a long long time with all the options.

PROS
- very realistic game of football
- options and more options that will keep you playing for ages
- great new features
- classic Madden when all is said and done
- great AI

CONS
- graphics could be better
- terrible slowdowns
- HORRIBLE use of memory, needs a full 251 card for using all the features
- repetative commentary (Maddens especially)
- load times are rather long

NWR Feedback / reviews for games
« on: August 25, 2003, 02:18:14 AM »
Why can't you guys let us know in the header of a review if it is for the gamecube or GBA?

I dont own a GBA, and have no need to read a review for games on it, and in most cases you have to read half ther review to find out.

With the server being so slow this would save us a great deal of time.

I dont mean to bitch about this but it is a real simple request.

Also, why are there so little reviews on this site, especially for the cube. You guys do a great job reviewing games and I for one would like to see more of it, especially third party titles.

Thanks

« on: July 23, 2003, 05:30:37 AM »
I am playing through Eternal darkness again, and for the life of me I cant remember how to operate the big telescope with the mirrors you have to adjust. I had no problem the first time around (but that was months ago), I have tried everthing.

Any help would be appreciated.

General Gaming / Dolby Digital or DTS
« on: June 03, 2003, 05:36:17 AM »
My reciever can provide both 5.1 dolby digital and DTS, I have a fibre optic connection so both are in full operation.

When a movie has the option to choose between the two, which one is the better quality sound choice?

NWR Feedback / Lack of Moderation?
« on: April 23, 2003, 04:29:49 PM »
Where have all the Mods gone?

One of the great things about these forums was the order and strict moderation, this seems to have dissapeared as of late.

It has become a free for all as of late, just look at the GC disscussion thread, there are at least 5 mario cart thread on the front page.

Lets get this back to the way it was. This was one dictatorship I am sad to see leave.

NWR Feedback / Dead Boards?
« on: April 19, 2003, 07:42:15 PM »
Is it just me or have these boards really gone quiet since PGC switched to the new forum style?

It appears a lot of people never made the switch.

Any ideas why?

Nintendo Gaming / the gameboy to gamecube scam
« on: April 04, 2003, 07:29:34 AM »
I have to say I am seriously pissed at all these new games Nintendo is releasing that only give you certain options if you are connected to a gameboy.
I bought a gamecube, and I buy games for the gamecube, I should not have to buy a handheld unit in order to fully use what I have already purchased, the stupid tingle tuner and original metroid you can open are perfect examples.

I have no desire at all to own or play a handheld unit, I barely have enough time to play the freaking console.
If nintendo wants to have these things in thier games, so be it, but at least give poeple who dont want to buy a GBA another way to open and use these options.

This is honestly a stunt that Microsoft would pull and everyone would be screaming monopoly. I dont see this as any differant and including IE with the Windows disk.

Give me a choice Nintendo, dont force me to buy hardware I simply dont want.

Nintendo Gaming / A fine line to be number 1
« on: February 02, 2003, 12:11:33 PM »
After reading these boards for over a year, and seeing how everyone wants Nintendo to regain the number 1 position in the console race, I pose a few questions and give a few thoughts.

First of all, what was it that lost Nintendo the number 1 spot in the first place?
Was it refusing to go the CD format, or was it a bigger issue?

May here seem to want to 2 very differant things from what I have seen.
Everyone wants Nintendo to make new and innovative games and at the same time keep the old favorites alive and kicking while remaing true to their roots.
Can this be done? Can they be innovative and keep the feel of the past glory in these games?

Now one has to consider what it will really to tkae to overthrow a really powerful king in Sony.
Sony is succesfull because it appeals to the masses, this cannot be argued.
Can Nintendo appeal to the masses, while pleasing the difficult to please Nintendo loyalist?
How can they do both?
It seems to me like it it is a double edged sword. To overthrow the king one must first emulate the king at the same time convincing people that they will the same but better.

I am not sure how this can be done.
Will Zelda be a start, I really dont think so.
Metroid could have been, but needs more pushing still.

I  am looking for some real objective feedback here, not the standard "if people were smart they would just buy Nintendo" rhetoric.
How do you get a sony fanboy to take a look, and even more important, how do you make him like what he see's?

Thanks
