How viable are they if I got really good at understanding the universal mechanics of the game? Right now I can barely remember move lists so I got a ways to go.
Tier lists ahoy:
http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=126056You can probably do okay as long as you're not playing Dr. B. You might try Jack, since he has very weird moves and seems to turn heads even though he's been in Tekken forever.
Most importantly when I am being over run I just don't know what to do. I feel helpless. Used to feel like that in SC but eventually started to understand things. I don't get exactly when to push directions and buttons so I get up immediately with a block or roll away fast and stuff like that. Any tips?
Yeah, here's some basic advice. To get straight up (and into a blocking position as fast as possible), tap 'up' and let the stick go to neutral. Rolling away can be dangerous since you can be hit out of your roll. You can hold forward as you're knocked onto your back to spring back up.
Good players will try to pressure you with series of attacks that give you just enough time to start a move in between, but not enough for it to connect. It's a trap! Don't fall for it, and be a patient blocker. Resist the urge to hit buttons, and when you do, make sure it's your fastest poke or you otherwise know you're safe to do so.
