Wow, to be likened to Broodwars... Truly high praise.
In all seriousness, one of my favorite platformers of all time is both independently developed, 2D, and available on the eShop. Independent developers and Nintendo are exclusive entities- however, I do find it interesting that both parties tend to rely on the familiarity and ease of access that 2D Platformers provide. Clearly the genre still has plenty to offer in terms of innovation... Or, at least, that's what independent developers would like us to believe. I have played very few 2D platformers by independent developers that actually prove this.
Still, there's something to be SAI about polish and quality, and the familiar mechanics and setup of 2D platformers often ensures a high level of quality. I would just rather see anything else on the console because it's becoming a bit much. An abundance of one thing means there are many options but few do much to distinguish themselves.
