General Gaming / Re: What is your most recent gaming purchase?
« on: June 01, 2016, 09:02:17 AM »
I got 999 for the DS, which isn't really a retro game but it is a game I'd been looking for with no luck for a while so I was quite thrilled to get it.

I was interested in this for a time.  Are the puzzles more environmental (Myst) or more brainteasers (Layton)?

Not quite what you are looking for, but I'd suggest the puzzles are utterly forgettable.  I think there was a mix, but heavier on the environmental... don't take that for fact though because it's been a long time since I played.

If you want a puzzle game, there are much better ones on the market.  If you want a surreal visual novel with puzzle elements, then 999 is a pretty great choice.

ejamer, thanks for the details. Definitely doesn't sound like it's up my alley.

I'm very excited to start (and finish) the water dungeon tonight, as it's always been a favorite of mine.

I agree. The water dungeon in TP is fantastic. It makes you think without being overly frustrating (unlike many water dungeons in the series).

I'm still bummed we aren't getting an E3 predictions episode...Zelda predictions, man!  What color will Link's tunic be? What are the new items?  How many dungeons?  What does the Amiibo and Gamepad support look like?  Will Zelda sparkle (Guillaume)?  Think of all the predictions you could come up with! And don't even get me started with gender predictions...

I also didn't finish it but not because it got too hard.  I probably just got distracted with something else that came out.  This is a good reminder to go finish it.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: NX Launch Lineup
« on: May 30, 2016, 08:59:42 AM »
NX within the first year:

Zelda- obviously
Spla2oon- i think it's totally feasible they pull off a sequel to this by Christmas 2017
Pikmin 4- Miyamoto's already mentioned it
Retro studios game- no idea what it could be
3D Mario (Galaxy sequel)

I'm not expecting much more than this the first year. If they are able to pull this off, it would be 4 major games, plus whatever Retro is doing (and third parties, of course).  Zelda, Mario, and Splatoon alone should be enough to get people to buy the NX.

I don't think Nintendo will be porting any games from the Wii U over to NX.  One of the problems with the Wii U was confusion over whether it was a brand new console or just an upgraded Wii.  If all the launch games were just ports of Wii U games, that confusion may still exist with NX.

You have to keep in mind this is under Yamauchi who didn't play games, was kinda an old guy from the old school of business.

Isn't this kind of the same situation with Kimishima? And...how will that bode for the NX?  I mean, unless you think that all the details of the NX were conceived of under Iwata and Nintendo plans to execute that vision (which I believe has been alluded to).  This is actually my biggest concern with the NX (and I'm an NX optimist)--that Kimishima seems a little too out of touch to guide the company in the creative direction it needs to go.

TalkBack / Re: Kirby: Planet Robobot (3DS) Review
« on: May 25, 2016, 04:21:59 PM »
I didn't buy Triple Deluxe (despite all the praise), but this Kirby-in-a-mech thing is enough to tip me over the edge. It just looks awesome.  That, and, what other Nintendo games am I going to buy this summer?

59
The Splatoon boss is by far one of my favorite bosses in recent memory (if not of all-time).  The music, mechanics, and ridiculousness of the whole situation were quite enjoyable.

60
It would be nice if NOA had control over the naming of the NX for the western market.  Every single console name since the Wii has been atrocious.  I'd like to see a return to the split naming conventions like NES/Famicom.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Pilotwings Resort...worth it?
« on: May 16, 2016, 12:14:53 AM »
Well, I found it this weekend at my go-to used game store for $6.  It's been pretty fun so far (relaxing, actually).  I may get more mileage out of it going for 3 stars on each challenge.

I really hope Nintendo revisits Wuhu Island in a future game.  I thought I read somewhere once that Miyamoto wanted the island to develop a certain mystique over a series of games reminiscent of Hyrule, or some other Zelda land.

62
I am actually looking forward to seeing how the New Business section of the show devolves into madness during the Summer of No Games.

Nintendo Gaming / Pilotwings Resort...worth it?
« on: May 07, 2016, 02:18:05 PM »
In our glorious "summer of no Nintendo games", I'm looking for a few oddities I never played originally to fill my gaming time. I never picked up the Pilotwings 3DS launch title and it can be found pretty cheaply now.  I know the reviews were mostly mixed, but can anyone confirm or deny that this is worth it (given no Nintendo games for a while)?  I'm hoping the super stable 3D of my New 3DS will also improve the experience that original reviewers had.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Gonna buy a New XL tomorrow: IPS? Glasses?
« on: May 07, 2016, 02:11:16 PM »
I thought all New 3DS XL models had the IPS display and all New 3DS models didn't.  In that case, if you want the IPS screen, just buy any New 3DS XL.

Also, glasses are not a problem with the 3D effect...everything is very stable and consistent on the new models.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo: NX, Zelda Launching March 2017 Worldwide
« on: April 27, 2016, 09:41:05 AM »
A couple observations:

1. Don't these announcements make it clear that Nintendo is pouring almost all of their resources into NX.  Isn't that a good thing?  We've been saying all along that it needs a really strong launch lineup.

2. A Zelda-only E3 might be kind of fun...especially if the games turns out to be spectacular.  Also, what does it mean that it's the only "Nintendo game" to be shown?  Does that merely exclude games that Nintendo develops in house?

66
I expect something along the lines of..."more info coming at E3".  I would be quite surprised if any useful information comes out at the investor meeting.

If only 9 different things weren't assigned to the R stick.

Yeah, this is actually my biggest problem with the controls.

Ok, what's the deal with the Star Fox Guard "Special Demo"?  If you click in the lower right corner of the main menu it offers to take you to the eshop to download the "Special Demo" for Guard.  When the eshop launches it says "demo currently unavailable".

The thing is, most reviewers don't give out scores lower than 6s, and even 7s aren't too common.
Review inflation is definitely a real thing!  I'm not exactly sure why it is happening though. For students, grade inflation is all correlated with how strong of a signal grades are for scholarships, careers, and grad school.  I wonder if game scores climb up because readers prefer more positive outcomes?

Back to the topic, I've played the first few levels and the controls haven't prevented me from completely enjoying the experience.  My strategy: shoot and aim using the TV screen as much as possible and only look down at the game pad if it is clear you need a precision shot.

Thanks to prodding from my little girl, caved on the Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival (Wii U) sale.

I'm really sad that most of the "party games" for the Wii U got terrible reviews.  I've been itching to play one for a while.

Since there is often an inverse relationship between the things "traditional gamers" like and what I like, the middling to low review scores may have actually caused an uptick in my interest.  Especially since most of the criticism revolves around the control scheme, which I think I will be able to get used to.

I guess it was just the first batch released this morning. IGN gave it a 7.5, GameSpot gave it a 7.0, but then Polygon refused to even review it and all the others I saw were equivalent to a 5/10. I still want to play it.

Wait...Polygon refused to review it?  That actually makes me want to play it even more...

TalkBack / Re: Possible Details About Zelda Wii U Emerge?
« on: April 08, 2016, 10:24:40 PM »
All of these rumors are things I agree with. So....I guess they must be true!  ;)

74
I'm one of those who was pushed into a cell phone kicking and screaming and don't get me started on upgrading. Every 2 years to upgrade an entirely new phone really burns me up. I have no idea how or why people do it annually.

1.They break them.
2. They see their friends with the fancy new version (I mean who wouldn't love it if their photos were actually little videos and were unlocked with a fingerprint scan ;)
3. They get suckered in to it with clever hidden subsidies, monthly payments making the new version "free" (I'm lookin' at you AT&T NEXT plan!).

None of the three reasons above seem like they would apply to the NX for the following reasons:
1. Nintendo products are designed to be practically unbreakable and handled by small children.
2. Nintendo has a chance of going viral again with a popular new device, but it won't feel like a fundamental part of your person like a cell phone does.
3. Nintendo would just charge you for the full price of the device up front.

I think NX will be designed to be upgradeable, but I can't see them matching the cell phone makers by coming out with a new version every year.

75
edit: example of how it might work from NeoGaf.

I quite like the way this looks!  I'm completely on board with the idea if it has physical buttons.  It's basically a gamepad 2.0, expect much more ergonomic and manageable.  Plus, if the persistent rumors are true, I would love to throw that thing in my bag and continue to play NX games on the go with it.

I do seem to be in the minority of optimists on this thread, though...
