NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LV: Mage's Mystery Day Five
« on: November 14, 2011, 10:15:23 AM »
The corpse that greeted the council in the morning was a strange sight. Not only did none of them recognize the body, the orb was eerily silent on the matter.

"Who in the name of the Inferno is it?" someone finally yelled.

"The prisoner..."

"The killer, Rogue, you mean?"

"Well then, justice has seen it course." another said smugly.

"Justice exacted by the hand of evil, is not justice at all. Look at his bloodless body! Only the demon, the demon we must kill to save Leoria, would have killed in this horrendous fashion. Do not call this justice, or I call you a fool."

"Who died and made you..."

A dread-filled silence came over them all as they remembered how their distrust and uncertainty had already cost them the lives of the king, and their strongest Guard.

"We must vote gentlemen. There are six of us now, three good, and three evil. It will take more than the vote to settle this, it will take our magic."

Be seated, and begin! The orb commanded, and so they did.

Silenced (the Rogue) was killed by a mafia hit, and the since the vote was a tie, no one dies. The person with Sleep is now in control of this game because they will pretty much be deciding the outcome, by cancelling one vote. Abilities happen before the vote, and hits after it, so it all hinges on them...

No pressure  :P: :

Oh, and I should have given the ending story before leaving, and I apologize for that. To make up for it, everyone has a chance at the items tonight, and I'll be making seven of them available; the five that were scheduled and two others of the hp replenishing kind.

Lastly, I let Mop it up get away with saying she was the king because I knew that there was nothing she could have done to save herself at that point. Even if she had known Stevey was Jamisson and he sacrificed himself for her, there was too much damage for her to survive. However, it is against the rules in this game to say what your role is.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LV: Mage's Mystery Weekend Break
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:21:55 AM »

So it's Veteran's Day, and my sister called me up this morning and asked if I would like to go to Virginia for the weekend. No offense, but between hosting this game and packing to go to Virginia, I choose Virginia.

I was going to break after today anyway, but Monday is probably going to be the decisive day, and obviously there is still hope for the townies because of the way ability uses went last night.

Sorry for the delay, today probably would've been the last day, if I wasn't going away.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LV: Mage's Mystery Day Four
« on: November 10, 2011, 09:48:14 AM »
Even though they numbered few, the darkened council room felt crowded with the king's mourners. The castle staff and the Regal Guard all somberly sat with the council in the darkness. The blue orb gave the only light, and expounded upon King Zaden III many accomplishments on the battlefield, in prosperity, and in charity.

"He was your king, and was willing to sacrifice himself for this land, and you must be willing to do the same."

The blue orb evaporated, and took the darkness with it, blinding everyone in the room with the morning sun.

Almost immediately the women servants began to weep. As their male counterparts comforted them, they also began to cry; loudly, and uncontrollably.

"Weep not!" One of the Regal Guard called out. "The king now rides in the light of gods, and will be given just reward for the majestic life he lived!"

"That is not why we weep!" It is was the brazen head chef again, but this time, the boy who had interrupted the meeting that started all of this stood with him. "We are not sad for the king's death, but for our own impending morality. Our fate is in the hands of fools!"

"What hope have we?" A woman called out.

"Who will protect us? The king and Jamisson are dead!" The boy called out.

"Listen you weak-hearted harlots!" One of the council erupted.

"CALM!"

"We cannot turn on each other now. There are two usurpers and their foul demon left. There are also three councilmen left. We can counter them!"

"What of Rogue? He is not in cell! We know of this council!"

"Yes... What of Rogue?"

The blue orb returned and expelled everyone but the council from the room.

"You have a job to do council. Get to it, and do it right!"

3 mafia, 3 townies, 1 killer. Yesterday's end story.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LV: Mage's Mystery Day Three
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:55:59 AM »
When the council entered the room, there was a bloody body and a disfigured head floating before them. They recognized the blue robes the body wore, and those who aided in his death felt small pangs of guilt that were quickly erased by the king's orb revealing that the Usurper Stanos, a former councilman, was dead.

"The power of three is broken!"

"The power of three is broken" The orb restated. "But the king has been weakened, you must find him quickly if you mean to save him."

With that, the body, head, and orb vanished, leaving the council to once more question their decisions. Whatever confidence they gained from killing a usurper, was being subdued by the death of one of the king's protectors, and the knowledge that the king was weakened.

"What do we do now?" One of them asked.

"What else can we do? We must vote!"

Let the deliberations begin!!

OK, again, don't miss yesterday's ending story, PM me your ability uses, and good luck!

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LV: Mage's Mystery Day Two
« on: November 08, 2011, 06:44:33 AM »
Before I do the story, let me apologize for saying voting was going to end at 12pm. I meant to say 12am. So let me be clear; for today's voting, this thread will be closed at 12am EST, November 9th 2011. I'll get the item and dead threads up soon, but from now on, unless you take damage I'm not going to PM you your hp totals. That was my original plan, but since I forgot to send hp totals with roles, I did it for today. Don't forget to check yesterday's thread for an ending day story.

The members of the council woke slowly, fearing the outcome of their vote, or lack thereof. They still felt a draw to gather in the council room, but it was not nearly as powerful as yesterday's and so they took their time to get there, dragging their feet, fearing the truth.

Rather than a blue orb, it was the head of councilman Godfrey that was magically suspended in the middle of the room.

This is the result of both your action and inaction. The blue orb said from inside Godfrey's head. You must live with the truth of this result, but you are urged to continue diligently for the safety and security of Leoria!

With that, both orb and severed head disappeared, and the room's doors opened, allowing the servants to bring in breakfast of bacon, eggs, and bread.

"That blue orb told us to bring you conversational food, so here it is. It also told us to tell you to vote wisely."

The servants left, and the council started picking at the food, but none had much of an appetite, or desire to speak first.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LV: Mage's Mystery Day One
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:35:22 AM »
At dawn's first light, every man, woman, and child in Leoria's castle felt an innate pull to gather themselves in the council room.
When all were gathered, without warning the two opposite doors shut themselves, and a blue orb filled with a light mist manifested before them. Out of the orb came the voice of King Zaden III:

"I would welcome you all here, but the circumstances under which we gather are the worst I could have ever imagined. Among you, there are people who would seek to not only undermine my rule, but harm the citizens of Leoria. It is up to us to weed out this evil and protect our kingdom."

Murmurs of assent followed the king's statement, but the orb was not yet done:

"You have all been given names and appearances that will hide who you are, and in doing so, I hope that people's true intentions will be seen without the bias of history blinding the righteous. There are eight council members, myself, and two members of the Regal Guard who will take up the voting that will determine who is executed each night. You must all remain diligent, and sagacious. Trusting, but discerning. Unrelenting, but forgiving. As your king, I want this land to prosper, and its people to be happy. I fear that if we do not stop the usurpers, all hope for our people will be lost. We must fight, and we must win. Council be true!!"

Silenced followed the orb's evaporation, as those paying attention realized that there were thirteen people with their faces disfigured and wearing the blue robes that were supposed to signify them as members of the royal council; according to the king's orb, there should only have been eleven.

After a few moments, it was the head chef who whispered loudly;
"There are two who do not belong, and making it worse, their addition makes the council number thirteen: the forbidden number."

More whispers followed this statement, but the council members feared to say anything, lest in being the first to speak, they put either a target on themselves for the usurpers or cast doubt on themselves for the pending vote.

The castle's servants, no longer feeling the magical pull that led them to the council room, began leaving slowly, milling around, trying to consolidate rumors and combine theories, before returning to their duties.

When it was just the 13 supposed council members staring at each other nervously as a cold wind blew around the hems their robes, the Regal Guard entered the throne room and motioned for them to all be seated.

Without warning, a deep voice resounded from somewhere in the middle of the gathered guards:
"We were expecting there to be twelve of you, the council, the king, the guard members, and the demon. But we also know that the killer known as Rogue escaped the dungeons and was trapped here by our magic."

"You were expecting the demon?" A voice called out. Luckily, all eyes were on the Regal Guard and the shouter went unnoticed and managed not to blush as everyone searched for the culprit.

"The demon and his conjurers wish to take over the kingdom, what better way to do that than systematically remove the governing body of Leoria? They will still have to face the Regal Guard, but without the king, our power will be lessened. If King Zaden and Knight Jamisson die there is little hope for Leoria, if all the council dies, there is none. Remember this as you vote. Do not do so carelessly and without reason. There are nearly a million lives resting on each vote you cast. Take not this task lightly. You have been warned."

More silence.

"You may begin your deliberations, council"

With that, the Regal Guard filed out the room, and the doors closed ominously behind them, leaving the council, and the usurpers looking 'round the room and each other, wondering who would be the first to  speak.

The Rules Of The Game

What is the purpose of the game?

If you are on the townie side, you want to vote out all those on the mafia side and the killer.

If you are on the mafia side, you want to vote out all those on the townie side and the killer.

If you are the killer, you want to vote out all other players.

How do I vote? What is involved?

Each day all players are allowed to vote for whomever they believe is mafia.  Since all roles remain anonymous, mafia members will vote along with the townies.

Each day a new thread will be made and will open up with a narrative.  Each player then has the chance to vote off another player.  Simply type inBOLD for whom ever you wish to vote against. Example: Vote Maryjane. Although, that's a bad example. You'd never want to actually vote for me.J

You may change your vote as much as you like, but any old votes must remain legible.  Simply edit the post, unbold the vote, and make a new post with the new vote. So, you're old vote should look something like this: un-Vote Khushrenada. That is a much better example of how to play the game.A vote out is worth 10 damage +the number of votes cast against.

 What is a mafia hit?

Since the mafia is a small group of players, the mafia are able to make one hit every night and eliminate a player from the game. These are not based on calendar numbers, but rather on game days.  The only one who may contact the host with the kill is the current leader of the Usurpers.

In addition, the Killer also is able to make a hit each night of their own choosing.

  How is a winner determined?

For the townies to win, they need to eliminate all mafia members and the killer from the game.

For the mafia to win, they only need to tie the game. I.E., there are two townies left and two mafia members left. However, they must also eliminate the killer role as well. They cannot win by a tie if one of the other roles is the killer.

The killer wins either by eliminating all other players so that they are the only player left in the game or it is the killer and 1 townie left standing at the end. The killer must eliminate all mafia members.

What happens if the vote is a tie?

In the event of a tied vote, there will be an overtime, sudden death voting period of 30 minutes.  The only vote that may be cast is for one of the players who were tied at the end of voting.

As soon as a vote is cast that breaks the tie, the day vote is immediately ended and the player with the majority is eliminated regardless of how much time is left in the sudden death period. The vote that is cast can either be from a player that hasn't voted yet that day or from a player changing his vote from earlier in the day.

If the tie is unresolved after 30 minutes, then the vote is nullified and both players will live to see another day.

Unlike Khushrenada’s game, I do not have a failsafe planned if people start publicly revealing their abilities, therefore I must make it against the rules to do so. Neither can you reveal how much hp you have. You are allowed to publicly say that you’re losing health or things of that nature, however. In private messages, it’s all fair game, but publicly, let’s keep things a mystery. There’s the potential that King Zaden will be revealed to everyone, but that’s the nature of this game.

What is the .5 damage effect?

The .5 damage effect will only be used in the case of repeat attacks for a single attack. For example, if you have 10hp and get hit for 2.5 by Jamisson’s Sword of Beauty, you will have 8hp, but if you get hit by the sword again, you will only have 5hp. If you have 10hp and get hit by Jamisso’s Sword of beauty, you will have 8hp, but if you then get hit by a Magic Dagger, you be at 7hp. I’ve devised a very simple method of keeping track of all of this, so it will be easy to keep things straight.

Item Rules

Items will be selected by those casters who successfully vote someone out, ala Mafia LIV, but on a first come first serve basis. There are only two items that can cure poison, but Conflagration is healed by any item, and .5 damages will also be removed by any item. There will also be two magic enhancement items, and one item of a damaging effect. As well as filling health, hp replenishing items will also add health to those who aren’t down any. In addition, usurpers can give their health items to either Globin Demon or Gero, and any items received by the two regal guard knights automatically go to King Zaden unless the guards have received damage. If King Zaden is exposed, any of the council (townies) may give him their items.

Abilities

 Fire Whip
– Does 2 damage on the first attack, but any repeat attacks will result in 2.5 damage.

Whirlwind – Does 1 damage but will also steal the victim's ability and give them whirlwind as their power. Using this ability on someone with a role will replace their ability with whirlwind until they use it, but they neither get to steal the next users ability, nor does the one who used it against them get the role player’s ability, they will instead get an unused ability.

Magic Dagger - This gives 3 throwing blades worth 1.5 damage point each. The player can choose to target one player with them or spread out the damage. He can throw all 3 each day.

Hail - This player can cast 2 hail balls worth 2 damage points each. He can choose to target one player with them or spread out the damage. He can throw both of them each day.

Wild Magic- Uncontrollable spell that is worth 1-5 damage points against any player of the user's choosing. Every day, the damage amount will be randomly chosen , and if it’s 5 the caster will also receive 2 damage.

Ice - This spell allows the user 2 damage points against any player of their choosing each day. In addition, that chosen player's vote is nullified and not counted at the end of the vote tally.

Melee - This allows the user 2 damage points against any player of their choosing each day. In addition, they are so stunned from the beating, they cannot use their ability that day.

Stone - This ability protects the user's hit points from any other player's ability attack against him Except whirlwind. The user can also cast a stone to do .5 damage a day.

 Malicious Potion
- If used every day, it is worth 1 damage point against the user's chosen victim. But if the user decides to keep brewing, the damage will increase every day by the Fibonacci sequence. So, 1,2,3,5,8,13… You get the idea. Once the user has attacked somebody, the counter will start up again the next day. Yes, I did skip over the second 1 in the Fibonacci sequence, but I figure it’ll make things more interesting.

Mirror - The user can target any player of their choosing and give them a damage of 1 to their hit points every day. The real benefit from the mirror ability comes from the fact that anyone who uses an ability on this player ends up taking the same amount of damage themselves. The mirror users will only suffer half the damage themselves. Neither Globin Demon’s poison ability nor Malicious Potion are affected by Mirror.

Needle - Same as the Mirror ability except any attacker on the needle user suffers an automatic 4 points of damage themselves. Needle user still suffers the damage given them by the attack. Can shoot their needles for 2.5 damage, but will lose the ability to damage an attacker. Will not protect from poison or potion.

Tornado - This user is able to direct any attack against himself to another player of his choosing. He, in effect, sidesteps the attack and puts someone else in his place. The stress of this spell only allows it to be used every other day, and is useless against Globin Demon’s poison.

Weakening - This spell halves the damage of one players ability for the day. It can also halve another player’s ability on the same day, but the user then suffers .5 damage which can be applied to any other .5 damage they receive.

Ultima - This ability is worth 4.5 damage points and can be used each day but will be used consecutively against the same player until the target is dead.

Grey Mist - This spell nullifies everyone else's abilities for the day. It does not prevent hits from occuring or stop voting but no other actions will occur that day. It can only be used once every three days, but in the interim it will randomly identify a player, except Globin Demon and King Zaden.

Confusion - This giant explosion changes every vote case that day except for the user of this ability. A player will be chosen at random to take his place. It is a one-use only ability.

Sleep – Spell puts one player to sleep, and nullifies their vote and all actions.

Gooey – Spell shares damage received with another player. Target of spell is chosen by player, but that player is then forever linked to your damage.

Items

Mushroom
– Heals 2hp and can cure poison.

Seven Leaf – Heals 3hp and can cure poison.

Red Potion – Heals 2hp.

Green Potion – Adds 1.5 damage to ability and will repeat the .5 damage on a repeat attack of the ability it is used with. This works even for non-damaging abilities and will give 2 additional damage to their partner, if ingested by the person with Gooey. There are only two green potions in the castle.

Dragon’s Heartstring – Adds 3 damage to an ability attack.

Stale Water – Only removes conflagration and .5 damage effects.

Pomegranate Seeds – Heals 1hp.

Double-Edged Elixir – Heals for 2hp but will also randomly heal one of your enemies for 2hp.

Blessed Gruel – Heals 2hp and will protect against the first .5 damage received, but will not remove any previous .5 damages.

Processed Foods – Does 2.5 damage to hp, and the .5 damage will apply to any previous or future attacks. Only one of these corrupt meals exists in the castle.

Everyday only 5 of these 10 items will be up for grabs; they will be chosen at random.

NWR Forums Discord / Mafia! LV: Mage's Mystery Sign-up Thread and Story
« on: October 17, 2011, 02:04:49 PM »
Hi everyone, and welcome to the first mafia game I have ever hosted. I will be leaning heavily on the set up of the excellent Mafia LIV composed by Khushrenada, but adding a different story, and here it is:

King Zaden and his wise council sat at the heavy wooden oak table from which all their meetings were conducted, staring wearily at the body laying cold before them. A heavy black cloak protected the sacred table from the blood and pus that continued to seep from the body's orifices, but otherwise the woman was naked before them.

"It is the third body this week, sire." One of the council said. Zaden, distracted by the sight before him and its implications did not take notice of who spoke. It was the third body found killed in this disturbing manner, but other bodies had been found as well. Likely by whatever evil was summoned by the murderers.

"And they all bear the markings of sacrifice and poison." Another councilman unnecessarily reminded the king.

"This is the work of a usurper, sire. Who else would be so bold as to murder three citizens of Leoria and leave them before the palace gates? Surely it is someone wishing to deliver you a violent message."

"If it is a usurper, he will not be alone."

"We must strengthen the defenses! Seal the gates with spells that will not let a fly through, and begin an inquisition immediately!"

"If we seal the gates, we seal in the killers as well! We will be trapped with them."

"Aye, and they will be trapped with us."

"But who is it?"

"Someone learned."

"Someone evil."

"Someone powerful."

"Aye, powerful enough to sacrifice and summon."

"We must look for people powerful enough to sacrifice and summon."

"But gentlemen," the king finally spoke up, though never taking his eyes from the body "I have the most powerful and wise mages in Leoria serving on this council."

"The traitors are among us!" Most of them cried together. Those who were silent went unnoticed under the weight of the accusation.

Glances of suspicion circled around the table like waves of heat from a furnace. Those glances soon turned to the mutterings of spell inceptions and the air became palpable with intent and fear.

"Council!" Zaden roared. He finally took his eyes off the body and looked each of his councilors in the eyes. "The traitors are among us, as I have feared since the first death." The murmurs of dissent and disbelief were quickly quieted by Zaden's furious stare. "As we sit here in council, the castle's gates and windows have been sealed with spells of the ancients. From today forward, this council will meet daily, and we will weed out the usurpers and whatever foul creation they have summoned. We will not rest until..."

"Sire!" A page came bursting through the doors out of breath but determined to deliver his message. "Two more bodies have been found!"

"Did they look like this boy?" A councilman yelled pointing at the dripping body.

For a moment the boy's eyes focused only on the swollen breasts of the victim, but eventually his eyes saw the sickly secretions and he turned away.

"No," the page answered fighting to keep his breakfast down. "One body was drained of all its blood, and the other had its throat slit."

"There are three killers!"

"We face the power of three."

"No!" Zaden interjected. "But yes, as well." He sighed heavily and resumed his seat. The council followed his lead and the page saw himself out resisting the temptation to look at the only naked female body he had ever seen.

"I fear that we will no longer find any bodies in this state," the king said pointing at the body on the table. "The three sacrifices have raised a Globin Demon."

"A blood-sucker? But who would dare unleash something so..."

The cold stares on the councilor stopped his speech and urged him to hurriedly apologize to the king.

"As I was saying, they have raised the demon. They used the power of three to make three sacrifices, but now they have their demon to do their killing that they may keep their hands clean. If they mean to take my kingdom, I am their obvious target, so I have taken steps to confuse them."

As he pointed towards the door, a golden spark flew from Zaden's fingertip and hit the door with a resounding thud that shook the walls. At the king's signal, his Regal Guard came silently into the room, their black cloaks and hoods disguising their figures and their faces. They were not the most powerful of mages; they could not create fire walls, or ice rings, but what they could do was protect the king. Their magic was honed to a sharpness that had one purpose: protect the king no matter what the cost, and by any means. It would be these men standing guard throughout the castle to make sure no one escaped the trial, and it would also be them who executed the king's justice against the usurpers.

"Council, in a moment the Regal Guard will cast spell upon us all that will change our names and appearances, and it will be through these disguises that I will be made safe against our enemies. And it is through these disguises we must discover who among us is a traitor. As we are now, we have all sworn the same allegiance to Leoria, and you have all sworn the same allegiance to me. In disguise, we are new people whose true intentions will show through our deeds in this council room. BEGIN!"

At once the twelve Regal Guard men began an incantation that caused the council room to grow dark within a greenish hue of enchantment. The green hue swam through the air at the Regal Guard's persuasion, touching each council member and changing their features one by one. A change of nose here, and a moving of a mole there. The storm settled and each council member found themselves sprawled on the floor amongst the Regal Guard, one of whom spoke to them all.

"The guest rooms surrounding the courtyard have been prepared for all of you. The king instructs you all to make yourselves comfortable, and familiar with each other and the rules of the coming council meetings. When one of you is labeled traitor, my ax will pass judgment. Do not forget the murderer who slit the stable boys throat this morning, he is among us somewhere as well"

With that, the Regal Guard left, leaving the king and council members alone with each other and their suspicions.

Okay, so roles:

Mafia (usurpers):

Globin Demon: Bloodsucking demon who feeds on the blood of one person a night in order to be sated. Along with his thirst for blood, he also poisons those he feels threatened by. Poison will damage for 1, and then follow the Fibonacci Sequence for damage everyday; 1,2,3,5,8, etc. After being summoned by the usurpers he is now their leader. He still feels a pull to do their will, and that is the only reason he hasn't devoured them.

Gero: Leader of the usurpers before the demon summoning. Wants to replace the king and has submitted himself to the forces of evil to do so. In joining evil he has gained the ability of Night Shade, which not only does a damage of 3, but also blocks the ability of the affected person for the day.

Stanos: Fire mage whose dealings with evil allow him to use the spell Conflagration which does 2 damage, but does 3 on a repeat attack, then 4, etc. Conflagration can be cured with certain items, which would return damage on that person to 2.

Kaine: Evil apprentice whose Dark Light attack also identifies its victim while doing 2 damage. Cannot identify King Zaden.

Power of three: As long as the three mages of the mafia remain alive, any attack on them will be halved. They can still be identified, but they are protected from half of all damage except from the vote.

Killer
Rogue: Escaped prisoner unwilling trapped in the castle trying to escape. He has disguised himself as a servant and roams the halls of the castle killing everyone in his continued attempt to escape the castle and his fate of execution by the Regal Guard.

Townies (council)
King Zaden III: King of Leoria, Defender of Justice, and Leader of the People. Tired of being brought the bodies of his people, he decided to seal himself in his castle with the evil that threatens his land. Rising to the position of King by being the most powerful mage, Zaden can attack with his Light Sword for a justice wielding 4 damage which also grants identification.

Regal Guard Knight Jamisson: Leader of the Regal Guard, and ultimate executioner. His skill with magic swords is rivaled only by the king. His Sword of Beauty slashes for 2.5 damage (with the .5 only mattering for a successive attack). If he dies, his squire or the king will carry out the nightly executions. Along with his prowess with the sword, as a member of the Regal Guard, Jamisson can also sacrifice himself for the king in any situation if he has identified the king, or the king has identified him. Basically if Zaden is targeted by an ability, the vote, or the mafia hit and knows who one of his guards are, they can take the damage for him. Of course, doing this will reveal who he is to everyone, including the mafia, but also:

Regal Guard Squire Artois: Squire to Knight Jamisson and fast learner. He fights with the curved Arakh swords of the Dothraki (Game of Thrones reference) and can slice for 2 damage, but only 1.5 on repeat attacks to the same person. As a member of the Regal Guard, he can also sacrifice himself for the king, but being sacrificed for a ability attack will result in his immediate death regardless of health.

Council Members: True and able servants to King Zaden. Powerful mages whose abilities vary by temperament and teaching. They are unknown to each other, but have powers that will allow them to attack and remember familiarities with loyal council members.

That's all I have for now, I'll do the rules, items, and other stuff later today or early tomorrow morning. Sign up!! If we can get 20 people again that would be great.

Clearly 3D is evolving rapidly. Are there any new technologies that Sony is interested in?
Yeah absolutely. One of the cool things we’ve just announced is our new PlayStation monitor, this is not only a great HD, 2D and 3D monitor, but it also supports a unique feature that lets two players play head-to-head gaming, full-screen on the same screen without each other seeing the others screen.
This is going to be great feature that many developers are really excited about.
We've also got a new head mounted display that we showed at CES, that can produce really great quality 3D and a very immersive experience for games. The head-mounted display has twin-OLED screens; very high quality.
At the moment it’s just a head-mounted display; the head isn’t being tracked – but that’s something we’re doing R&D on. I have to say, what we’ve done in the R&D projects has just been fantastic.
We’re working with a couple of games at Sony that are experimenting with virtual reality type experiences.

Are you saying virtual reality is coming back?
Yeah it could be, it certainly seems possible, and these head-mounted displays incorporate 3D tech. It’s very, very cool. And obviously it’s a fantastic way to experience 3D because both images are being directly fed into each eye.

Not an outright confirmation, but they seem to be working on it.

Nintendo Gaming / Game Ideas - WiiU Edition
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:44:19 AM »
I know the NWR staff is doing something similar, and some have already expressed ideas in other threads, so I just wanted to consolidate and see what others are thinking. For me, it's that demo of the shuriken throwing, and the arrow 'catching' that has me thinking; the movement of objects between the TV and controller.

My first idea is simply this: An FPS where the controller is the gun, and flipping it up towards you activates an electric shield to block incoming attacks. You couldn't shoot while the shield is up, but maybe after an upgrade, a slight shaking could produce a melee attack, or a blast of energy from the shield. So yeah, dual wriststraps are also a must.

Officials in the Russian capital say new public toilets, to be introduced by the end of the year, will be virtually indestructible. With basins made from ultra-strong fibrous concrete, and fittings hewn from a mixture of steel and reinforced plastic, officials say the state of the art WC's are vandal and terrorist-proof. "If somebody will leave a bomb inside the lavatory and it explodes, then the toilet won't be destroyed," said Anatoly Ashikhmin, an official involved in the project from the Moscow State Department of Building Maintenance. The drive to introduce bomb-proof toilets in the city follows a spate of deadly bomb attacks in recent years. In the most recent incident, a suicide bomber struck Moscow's main airport killing 37 people. The high tech facilities, say officials, will also be kept above 16 degrees centigrade (about 60 degrees Fahrenheit), important in a city where winter temperatures often plunge below -30 degrees centigrade. City officials say an extra security feature of the new unisex toilet is that members of the public will be able to spend a maximum of 30 minutes inside before the doors automatically open and an alarm sounds.

There has to be a way to trick these things into opening and sound the alarm after only a minute.

General Gaming / Nintendo's U.S. Servers Hacked - No User Data Stolen

http://techland.time.com/2011/06/06/now-nintendo-admits-it-was-hacked-says-no-customer-data-stolen/

Quote
Nintendo acknowledged a security breach in a statement yesterday, explaining that its U.S. servers came under cyber-fire a few weeks ago, but stressed that no personal user data was in breach. By comparison, Sony's seen troves of sensitive personal data repeatedly stolen (and reportedly distributed) as hackers took turns assaulting the electronics conglomerate's many corporate facets. The PlayStation Network went down April 20th and didn't fully return to life until last Wednesday, June 1st. And just last Friday, Sony was hacked again—specifically Sony Pictures, the company's TV and film production unit—by a group calling itself "LulzSec," as part of a campaign dubbed "Sownage." (Get it? Sony + Ownage?) LulzSec had previously claimed credit for recent attacks on PBS and FOX.com.

The same group's taking credit for the Nintendo hack,  "Nintendo, we just got a config file and made it clear that we didn't mean any harm," while adding "Nintendo had already fixed it anyway."
Nintendo's statement jibes with the hack group's claims.
"The server contained no consumer information," said Nintendo in a press statement adding "The protection of our customer information is our utmost priority."
Unlike prior attacks by hack group "Anonymous," which targeted Sony in retaliation for its lawsuit against PS3 root-key cracker George Hotz, LulzSec claims it's hacking for the greater good.
"We love Nintendo and Sega, if anything we'd hack *for* them," LulzSec just this morning. "If you're listening Nintendo/Sega, you, you uh... you want Sony hacked more?
Wild guess here: I'm pretty sure Nintendo/Sega don't.

So it wasn't malicious, but still...

Nintendo Gaming / The Controller As The Console
« on: May 14, 2011, 05:10:24 PM »
I wasn't going to make a thread about this, until I read this at IGN:  http://gear.ign.com/articles/116/1162204p1.html

Quote
Though many were quick to liken the concept to the Dreamcast, we've since learned that the intended purpose for the display may be far more complex, working simultaneously with the console to bring interactive elements and even stream full games to the controller...

A dual 2.4GHz and Bluetooth system would also support the claims that the controller could allow users to play games without the use of a TV, making it a handheld tethered to the range of the 2.4GHz transmitter, of sorts. If video and audio are simply transmitted to the controller itself, it could effectively end battles for living room TV usage or splitscreen multiplayer.

Now, their idea is much simpler than mine of having the controller be fully portable with like 2 or 3GB of memory on board. What if Cafe games were designed so that you could take small pieces of the game on the controller? It might not work for every game, but it would be a great competitive advantage to offer people full fledged games on the go that they were already playing at home. I also think this is why the 3DS needs to be useable as a controller, and the controller needs to have StreetPass functions.

But, let's say Nintendo goes simple and it's more like IGN's idea, and you can simply stream your games to the controller. Still cool, useful for multiplayer perhaps, but it to me, it's just so short sighted. I say put everything in the controller, make the system a hub, and go balls to the wall. If all they do is allow for the controller to take the next two hours of Paper Mario Galaxy RPG with you to play on the way to work, at lunch, and/or on the way home, that'll be good.

I couldn't fit it into the title, but to streamline this thread, I suggest that it only be about action anime and cartoons like Escaflowne and Justice League Unlimited.

I dropped out of the Anime game awhile ago after being saturated in things FullMetal Alchemist, Naruto, Inuyasha, the various Gundam, Gantz, Fate Stay Night, and many other things I cannot remember. I think I've mentioned before that my brother speaks Japanese, and to hone his skill he sometimes translates manga, and used to introduce me to a lot of anime and manga. With all that, and the fact that I liked close to 80% of the anime he offered me (and like 2% of the manga lol), I still got bored of it. Perhaps it was just too much, but perhaps I started noticing a repetition of ideas. So for the Anime part of things, this is more of an inquisitive thread; what's happening with Anime nowadays? Is there any reason I should jump back in, or is it more of the same reluctant, kind-hearted, hero with amazing super powers that has no chance of being defeated, yet is anyway, then finds some new way to win?

As for action (American) cartoons, we're still a long way from the glory days of Saturday morning cartoons with G.I Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, X-Men, Spider-Man, Centurions, Thundercats, He-Man, Care Bears, and another one that for the life of me I can't remember but it was about these blue people that were created by humans to be a labor force, then they rose against the humans, beat them back to the ends of the solar system, and the humans were mounting a resistance to take their planets back and free the enslaved humans. But, in today's day, there have been some good cartoons like Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. There were some good ones not long like Justice League Unlimited and Batman Beyond. But the adult cartoon still seems to be hard for American's to grasp, and this genre is stifled by being geared toward children. There have been some good and some terrible cartoon movies recently that are released straight to DVD, but they are so hit and miss it's hard to say they're good for the genre. Is something better than nothing?

So anyway, are their any good shows I'm missing? Can American adults ever embrace cartoons made for their age group that aren't comedic like the Japanese do? What about more filler series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars for big Hollywood sequels, would that work?

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Says No to 3DSPhone

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/mobile/04/01/nintendo.phone/index.html?hpt=Sbin

Quote
We have no desire to get into telephony," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said. "We believe that we will earn our way into someone's pocket without having to offer that (phone capability) as an additional factor.

Nintendo isn't completely discounting the idea, but the high costs involved in cellular carrier partnerships are a roadblock, said Hideki Konno, a top Nintendo producer. "It's not that I'm uninterested," Konno said through a translator. "However, I look at the business model, and I see so many additional costs that come into play." Splitting revenue with cell operators would affect the retail price of games, he said. "Would we increase the price of the software itself?" Konno asked. "The distribution couldn't be free."

While Apple has had significant success with the iPhone, some of its mobile-platform adoption has been driven by the iPod Touch, a phone-less entertainment device. And Samsung Electronics is releasing a similar handheld media player, called the Galaxy Player, in the U.S. in the next few months. Nintendo recently has begun heavily criticizing the sprouting smartphone-games industry. Executives said the app-store model degrades the quality of games and isn't sustainable. "We don't want to be in the phone business," Fils-Aime said. "We don't see that as an opportunity. Phones are utilities. Phones are not by definition entertainment devices." Even so, Nintendo has been thinking about phones for at least a decade. It filed a patent for a game-playing cell phone in 2001. "It makes sense to enter a market when you feel you've got some sort of competitive advantage," Fils-Aime said. "From Nintendo's perspective, we don't see that we have a competitive advantage in telephony."

Sony's new nonphone PlayStation gadget, which is scheduled to debut this year, will be able to connect to cell data networks for online play and accessing downloads. Fils-Aime from Nintendo did not discount the idea that a Nintendo system might adopt this strategy at some point and highlighted the relationship his company has with AT&T. Owners of the 3DS will receive free access to AT&T's public Wi-Fi hot spots in the U.S., starting in May.

Classic Nintendo. First they say gamers don't want to play games on the internet, now they say phones aren't entertainment devices.

Another thing I don't understand is them saying they have no competitive advantage in releasing a phone, but I did I miss something? Is this not Nintendo who for years and years dominated both the console and handheld arena, and is poised to retake the console crown? The strength of their name and reputation should be their competitive advantage, along with a unique phone.

The one thing I do understand is them not wanting to split their profits. They make a lot of money, and they don't want to mess with that, but then why not release two devices. One that has simple calling features accessible with a headset, and one that is WiFi only. They could kill four birds with two stones, by biting into Apple's market, testing the waters of a phone, positioning themselves into a better bargaining position with wireless carriers should the 3DSPhone be successful, and making money the tried and true way all the while.

I don't know, I guess I'll be satisfied if Nintendo can keep making DSs and games, but I would hate for them to go the way of the dinosaur, just because they think like one.

General Chat / The State of TV: Fantasy Edition
« on: April 02, 2011, 12:49:53 PM »
Okay, so let me start by quantifying the fantasy genre. In the strictest sense of the term, Sci-Fi could be included in this genre, but I also feel that it's such a large sub-genre that it warrants it's own thread. In a way, the vampire genre should warrant it's own thread, but that has only recently become large enough, so it will be in here unless others disagree.

So for the purposes of this thread fantasy includes; vampires, magic, superheroes, mystical weapons, zombies/ghosts/etc. and delusional characters who imagine the world to be something it isn't.

Magic shows I watch(ed) and can remember: Merlin, Charmed, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Hercules, Xena: Warrior Princess, Fantasy Island, Carnivale, and The Beastmaster^.

Vampires: True Blood^, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Blade: The Series

Mystical Weapons: Witchblade (not the anime, that'll probably be the next thread), and Legend of the Seeker^

Superheroes: The Incredible Hulk, Spider-man, Batman, Wonder Woman, Lois and Clark, (all of those are old live-action shows, superhero cartoons will/should be in with anime), Smallville^, Heroes, No Ordinary Family, and Power Rangers.

Zombies/etc.: Tales from the Crypt, Are You Afraid of the Dark, and Walking Dead^

^ - stopped watching before it's conclusion.

Fantasy is another dying genre, and I wonder if it is again because of the state of society. When was the last time a major network produced a fantasy series? Even Vampire Diaries, despite its popularity, is on the lowly CW in these parts, and no other network has introduced its own series.

They keep trying with superheroes because of the popularity of the movies, but even these fail. Heroes was freaking great, and then they ruined it. Legend of the Seeker somehow managed to stay right on the edge of potential without ever, not even momentarily, crossing that line, and managed three seasons, while Carnivale was an amazing show that got canceled after two seasons. I like Smallville, but  for whatever reason, I just can't get into it enough to bother watching it regularly, and since I don't watch it regularly I find no reason to watch it sporadically.

Charmed was okay, but I was much more drawn in by the women than the storylines. Buffy was cool too, but I thought Angel ruined it, and for that I didn't watch the spin-off, and Hercules and Xena were also good, but pushed too far in their later seasons to try and boost ratings; like once the producers realized that Xena was popular among lesbians, and lesbians were popular among men, they pushed hard on the lesbian thing, which as a man I enjoyed, but detracted from the show.

So what's the point of all this besides the opportunity to discuss our favorite fantasy shows? It's because I wonder if there can be a good long running fantasy show. Merlin is pretty good so far, but I'm almost waiting for them to screw that up, and they've come close a few times. As someone mentioned in the Sci-Fi thread, True Blood is a guilty pleasure (which is a shame because the books are fantastic even if they didn't have sex in them, and they have way less than the shows), and was Charmed, and Xena. The witch shows always used the family atmosphere/comedy backdrop to pull the show along, and other shows use other things, like exotic locales, tame fantasies, and (what I assume are) attractive men.

Do fantasy stories not have the strength to stand on their own?

General Chat / The State of TV: Sci-Fi Edition
« on: April 01, 2011, 03:30:37 PM »
I was inspired to start this thread today by watching The Jetsons on Boomerang. At first I was thinking about how it's a little scary how badly we underestimate the future, then I started about other shows that also underestimated the future, and of course that led me into thinking about Sci-Fi.

Now, for TVs sake, the overall Star Trek universe (besides Enterprise) is my favorite Sci-Fi series ever, with X-Files and Fringe coming in close behind. I've seen the Stargate movie twice now, but I still can't get into the series. I don't know what it is, but I just got bored of the second season VERY quickly. I've also never seen Battlestar Galactica, but it's one of those series that I meant to give a try and somehow never get around to it. I've also never seen Firefly, but I've seen Serenity and loved it (though I don't agree with the interwebs that is was the best Sci-Fi movie ever).

Sci-Fi is one of my favorite genres because of how imaginative it is, and I love to read books about it, and watch TV and movies on it. The problem is these series often do not have a mass market appeal. Even Fringe, which thank the gods was picked up for another season, has a very low fanbase but hopefully it's enough to satiate Fox's Friday quota, along with all the deliberate product placement.

So what is it? Are there not enough nerds in the country? Are nerds too picky? Or are they so tech savvy that they simply download Fringe on torrents and others? OR is it that the series they come out with simply aren't compelling enough? I loved every series of Star Trek when I was a kid; the original, TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Then of course there was X-Files which was great and long running, then there were other things like Outer Limits which did a lot of Sci-Fi and even Twilight Zone had a lot of Sci-Fi(ish) stories.

Nowadays, we've gotten shows like Surface which I thought was great but failed after only one, very intriguing season. It was rough, but it had promise. Journeyman was also pretty decent, and got cancelled. I've already mentioned Firefly, and while I haven't seen the series, it's hard to imagine that the series that spawned such a good movie only deserved one season. DarkAngel was weak, as was Dollhouse (even though I did watch the entire first season, but the season finale was terrible and I was almost horrified that they brought it back for a second season) Flashforward could have been better but was okay, and I also like Eureka and Andromeda. So within that kind of broad scope of Sci-Fi, all have failed, and I wonder what is the secret to success?

What is missing from recent Sci-Fi that isn't drawing people in? Is it just the state of our society as a whole, that science is no longer popular? Do people no longer dream of what's happening beyond the stars because their blinded by their own self-importance and need for fame even on the level of their peers? Is the expense of creating the special effects needed for Sci-Fi too much to support a middling viewerbase? Can a new Star Trek series, based off the newest movie work? I really don't want to see the Sci-Fi genre die from TV shows, but that seems to be steadily happening, nothing ever seems good enough to steadily hold its viewers.

Beyond my questions, discuss favorites, sleepers, and trainwrecks, that others might have missed.

Edit: I also wanted to ask if HBO or another movie channel doing a new Sci-Fi show like they did originally did with Stargate could reinvigorate the genre.

General Chat / The State of T.V: Reality Edition
« on: March 29, 2011, 05:29:59 PM »
I'm creating this thread to discuss the direction T.V is taking, in regards to the overused reality genre. I am also hoping that others make threads of a similar nature (might I suggest a Sci-Fi Edition for all the Trekkies and SGaters).

What got me writing this thread was that today I clicked on the SyFy channel to watch Star Trek: Enterprise (which I don't like but there was nothing on so I figured I'd give it a chance) and instead found myself watching Marcel's Quantum Kitchen. Now, as a fan of science and food, I liked the show, although I don't like Marcel and I'll probably never watch it again. However, the Fy in SyFy used to stand for fiction, and I find a science fiction channel airing reality television as egregious as the History channel "making history" with their reality shows.

Back when I was a kid, the only reality shows were Cops, and talk shows like Richard Bey, Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake. Now the things are everywhere, and I find most of them distasteful and largely scripted (like those talk shows). Not that everything thing said is scripted, but the scenes are set up and then the aspiring actors who sign up for these things then have 'real' discussions. Reality shows are now the norm, and I bet it won't be long before Cartoon Network also has a reality series on it. I think that overall, reality shows compared to scripted TV are like the cheap games on iOS compared to 3DS games; one offers a quick, mind numbing experience to fill a gap in your life, while the other can potentially offer you a memorable experience that leaves a lasting impression on your life.

There are reality shows that I like; America's Next Top Model, American Idol (only the tryouts), Survivor, Amazing Race, Bizarre Foods, No Reservations, Survivorman, Cops, and  The First 48, but the only one of those I watch on a regularly is ANTM, the others are just things I turn to when I'm bored.

So does reality TV actually have any value, or is it just a way for studio execs to make cheap entertainment and sell commercial air time for the exact same amount as, or even more than, a scripted show?

General Gaming / SquEnix Opens New Studio For Smartphone Gaming.

Square Enix isn't exactly a stranger to the smartphone scene, but it looks like the company behind Final Fantasy (among countless other games) is now going to be moving quite a bit beyond ports of its existing games for other consoles. The company has just announced the launch of its new Hippos Lab game development studio, which will be primarily focused on creating "high quality original content" for smartphones. Details are unfortunately still pretty light beyond that, but the studio has apparently been up and running since March 7th, and it says it hopes to have its first game "ready soon." No word if they've scored the license for Hungry Hungry Hippos.

Original content for smartphones from a big name developer. I think it's also likely that these smartphone games will also find their way on to tablets, making this even more interesting for the market.

The reason I particularly find this interesting is because Nintendo has unequally dominated the mobile gaming market since it introduced the Game Boy, but smartphones are now the most ubiquitous gadget on the planet, and just about everyone plays games on their phone when bored. It is so much simpler to carry around just your phone, rather than two devices, that having a good phone for gaming seems like a better idea than having two separate devices, especially since phones are catching up, and (probably pushing what and when Nintendo does with the 3DSi) will soon pass the 3DS in terms of graphical specs, and 3D content, creation, and publishing. Also, like I mentioned before, these games are going to find their way onto tablet which are even more powerful, and will probably take a while to get to the power needed to run the new cutting edge PC games coming out.

Nintendo's argument is that their games are of a better quality, and yes, Nintendo games are of a higher quality, but SquEnix and other developers/publishers are taking smartphone gaming much more seriously, so their games will not be of higher quality. Nintendo could give incentives to devs to get exclusive games, and exclusive content on their version, but so can Apple, Google, and Microsoft. The 3DS will also do initially well because of its glasses-free 3D and content agreements, but smartphones are catching up quickly in that respect, and that, and not the NGP, could be the reason for what seems like a rushed launch of the 3DS.

I think that leaves Nintendo with a few choices; (actually a lot of choices, but here are three of them...)
1. Give the 3DSi the ability to make calls with an included Bluetooth headset.
2. Become software only for the mobile market.
3. Try (and probably marginally succeed) to sell the 3DS and its successors on only the strength of their own software, amidst the ever expanding and quickly evolving smartphone gaming market.

I have my own thoughts on what those choices and others mean for Nintendo, the pros and cons of them, their likeliness, and what they mean for gamers and gaming in general, but I'm curious as to what you guys think this all means, if anything.

General Gaming / Sony Playstation Tablets (now official)
« on: February 16, 2011, 01:25:03 PM »
There isn't much info out on the device yet besides that it's a tablet, has a 9.4" screen, runs Android, is Playstation certified, and balances its weight more naturally for one handed use by have a "loop around" section on the back that puts more weight directly over the users hand and wrist, making it feel lighter, and less fatiguing. That loop also serves to give the tablet a raised angle to type on, while it sits on a table. The story is up at Engadget.

So far it's still just a rumor, but it's from credible sources, just like the Xperia Play was way back when that was first leaked.

This is interesting because I assumed that Sony was going to have the PSP2 be their PS/tablet hybrid, it sure is powerful enough, and with any decent OS can be marketed as such, but obviously Sony feels like those are two different markets.

So now Sony will have 4 Playstation devices on the market; the PS3, the PSP2, the PSPhone, and the PSTablet. Which is an interesting strategy, considering that the PSTablet will be able to connect to a TV sans the PS3.

The tipsters have a lot of praise for the device, saying it's the best looking device Sony has ever put out.

For now, the alleged ship date is Septmember for a price of $599, but both are subject to change.
