Tomy Blames Nintendo for Low Profits
« on: February 20, 2007, 06:28:58 AM »
The toy maker anticipates to make 3 billion yen less than previously expected, thanks to Nintendo's success with DS and Wii.

A report from Reuters today states that Japanese toy maker Tomy has cut its annual profit forecast from 5 billion yen to 1.7 billion yen, blaming high sales of Nintendo's Wii and DS game systems for diminishing toy sales.

Tomy says that Nintendo's video game systems have replaced demand for these toys among young boys. Tomy manufactures cards, action figures, and other traditional toys based on licensed media such as movies and television.

lol, is this Tomy admitting to a misprojection due to competition, or a PR move for Nintendo?

Oddly enough, could be both consider that Tomy does dabble in stuff like Pokémon toys, although not nearly to the degree that Bandai did, so propping up Nintendo in this case wouldn't be all bad for them.

yeah its like they are blaming nintendo and promoting them.  If I was to blame someone I wouldn't directly say Nintendo's DS I'd say the handheld gaming has stole our sales.  Then again one could say Nintendo DS is the whole handheld market

They're probably angling for more capsule toy franchises!

What a bunch of whiners.  Blame the games.  Sheesh!

Movie attendance is down because of video games, supposedly.  I used to work at Playdium, where it was often discussed that any video arcade (or variation of one) had low attendance because of home video games.  And, of course, violence, particularly among young people.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.

But they're blaming Nintendo specifically for their bad toy sales?  As already mentioned, that's another PR boost for Nintendo!  :P

Toys ARE pretty cool these days, actually.  Some of them, anyway.  Maybe 'cause I don't remember anybody having Power Wheels when I was a kid.  I was totally into Transformers (G1), but that took a while to slow down even after I got a NES.

Isn't Tomy's name all over the Naruto games which are exclusively on GC, GBA, DS and now Wii?!

You're right, my ape friend. They publish all the popular Naruto games on the Nintendo consoles (if I am not mistaken), so they should still be getting some profit.

Oh and I have to tell this to Tomy...

lol. Nintendo making enough profit to make Tomy say that they Nintendo solely is to blame for low sales must mean that they don't care about sony's profit... if any. Music to my ears!

Sounds like good news to me. More people will just support Nintendo rather than fight them.

OMG!  Nice ROWSDOWER avatar MJRx9000!  Good old Troy and Zap!

Anyway, I just want to say "oh, cry" for Tomy.  It's crazy that they're blaming Nintendo specifically, though I think it's not only promotion but the fact that DS fricking owns Japan and the Wii is off to an excellent start there as well.

Tomy manufactures ultra expensive cards, action figures, and other outdated overpriced toys based on licensed media such as Naruto and Naruto.

It is kinda funny that Tomy would specifically blame Nintendo for their lack of sales.  I find this pretty amusing.  But I won't be laughing if Tomy is seriously upset about this and ends up pulling their support for Nintendo and takes away their Naruto games.  The Naruto fighting games are awesome, especially the 3rd and fourth one.  I can't wait for the fifth one which presumably will be on the Wii.

I doubt it will go that far. Their most profitable projects HAVE been the Naruto games on the Nintendo consoles. How can you stop supporting the company that also proves to be the most profitable?

Simple, you take business lessons from SEGA.

I get Tomy's point. If kids save their money for (rather) expensive toys like video game systems, of course they can't buy as many action figures.
It is, however, not very admirable of them company-wise to blame someone with a completely different product for their own lack of success. They're the ones in the action figure business, THEY figure out how to sell more action figures.
If they were to disrupt the toy business altogether, like Nintendo did, I bet they too would be pretty pleased with themselves.
