TalkBack / Nintendo 3DS Launch Expected Next Year
« on: June 26, 2010, 08:13:28 AM »

Reggie speaks about the 3DS, stating that the system will not be available this year.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/23545

While on the Jimmy Fallon television show last night, Reggie Fils-Aimes stated that the Nintendo 3DS will not be available in North America this year. Instead it will launch in 2011.

It is unknown if Reggie was just referring to only North America. Judging by how Nintendo has been releasing its handhelds lately, it is likely that a European launch will be close to the North American debut. As for Japan, gamers will have to wait until Nintendo confirms a specific date.

TalkBack / No Underwater Stages in Donkey Kong Country Returns
« on: June 26, 2010, 12:02:31 AM »
Nintendo and Retro Studios clarify why they omitted underwater stages and the status of the other Kongs.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23543

Retro Studios' new entry into the Donkey Kong Country series won't feature the series staple underwater levels, according to Kensuke Tanabe, the Nintendo manager who has worked with Retro for quite some time.

Tanabe also commented on the possibility of appearances from other Kongs. "There was a direction from Mr. Miyamoto as to what to up point in the series' legacy to draw from," Tanabe said. "But I think it will be the most fun for people to play it themselves and see who pops up along the way."

Tanabe also commented that they are considering as to whether or not to add in any animal buddies into the game, such  as Rambi the Rhino. He also revealed that water stages are nowhere to be found in Donkey Kong's new adventure, stating that they felt too slow, and it wasn't the gameplay they were looking for.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is due out this holiday season.

TalkBack / Aonuma Interested in Adding DLC to the Zelda Series
« on: June 25, 2010, 03:49:23 PM »
Zelda producer discusses his views on DLC in regards to the series.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23541

Eiji Aonuma, producer of the Zelda series, discussed the potential of downloadable content in the series in a recent interview with Game Informer.

When questioned about the topic, he replied with, “Obviously, we have thought about DLC, and we are thinking about it." This is by no means a confirmation of downloadable content appearing in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but it at least tells us that they are considering it.

Another interesting piece of information that Aonuma discussed was the idea of online functionality. He commended that online play may not come in the form of multi-player or co-op, but instead through "the idea of communications between players."

The latest Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward, is set to be released next year.

TalkBack / MonkeyPaw Games Working on Nintendo 3DS

The company's President confirms that they are working on content for Nintendo’s new handheld.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23540

In a recent interview with Joystiq, MonkeyPaw Games President John Greiner (former President of Hudson Entertainment, the U.S. branch of Hudsonsoft) was questioned as to whether or not his team is going to jump on the Nintendo 3DS bandwagon. He confirmed that they are indeed planning to develop for the device.

He was also asked whether or not he had yet worked with Nintendo on digital content for the 3DS. He responded with, “I was just there right before I came here and we talked about it, and they want our titles. They said, 'Yeah, definitely, this would make a great launch title -- so hurry up and go.' Of course, they're going to be very aggressive and gain third-party support. Okay, that's good, so we'll move forward."

He seemed a bit cautious in terms of the device's market size, but he was still upbeat on developing for it overall. "Still sketchy on how big the market will be and all this kind of stuff, but I think it's worth it. Especially for our licensed brands, because it will be effective for marketing for sure. People will be like, 'Oh yeah, I want that game in 3D.'"

No specific titles from MonkeyPaw Games have been been announced for the Nintendo 3DS.

TalkBack / In Case You Missed It: The 3DS Charging Cradle
« on: June 25, 2010, 01:39:54 PM »
Nintendo’s new handheld may be charged differently from its predecessors.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23539

With all the buzz surrounding the Nintendo 3DS over the past few weeks, it isn’t difficult to skip over a piece of information. One example is Nintendo displaying a different way of charging its new Nintendo 3DS at E3 last week.

Besides using a typical AC adapter (like what many of the demo units were using during the event), Nintendo also displayed a charging cradle that can be used to charge its new device.

It is unknown whether or not there are additional ways to charge the Nintendo 3DS besides these two options.

TalkBack / EA Predicts Big Things for FIFA in North America
« on: June 25, 2010, 01:28:54 PM »
EA Sports’ vice president of football thinks that FIFA’s biggest market is about to change.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23538

Four years ago, the U.S. market was the fourth-biggest market in the world for FIFA titles. Fast forward to 2010 and Matt Bilbey, EA Sport’s vice president of football, predicts that the U.S. market is about to move up a few spots.

Game Developers Conference 2010:

In 2010, EA Sports has managed to put one more soccer game than usual onto store shelves, that being 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, released across four platforms earlier this year. By the time the next FIFA title hits stores, Bilbey predicts that America will become the world’s biggest market in terms of video game sales for football/soccer.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa is currently underway. Assuming that the strong American team continues to do well, sales of FIFA titles may see sales spikes across the country.

TalkBack / Nintendo Underestimates Art Academy Demand in Japan
« on: June 24, 2010, 07:27:20 PM »
Nintendo’s new classroom painting game has been severely under-shipped in Japan.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23522

The Art Academy titles released for the Nintendo DSiWare service last year have had a strong following, with many gamers regularly using the application to paint their own pictures and share them with friends. In Japan and Europe, Nintendo saw the appeal for the game and decided to turn it into a retail game, which hit Japan last week.

In its first week, the game managed to sell 21,000 units, but suffered from sellouts throughout the country. According to sources, the game managed to move 89.85% of its initial stock, which makes it appear that Nintendo and retailers greatly underestimated the demand for the game.

Art Academy is set to be released on the Nintendo DS in Europe this August. A North American release has not been set.

TalkBack / Ni no Kuni Dated for Japan
« on: June 24, 2010, 01:07:26 PM »
Level-5’s new role-playing game will be in stores before the year closes.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23520

Level-5 has quickly become one of the Nintendo DS’s biggest supporters, with titles such as Inazuma Eleven and Professor Layton already performing well on the system. Come this December, Level-5 may have yet another Nintendo DS success story on their hands with Ni no Kuni.

Set to be released in Japan on December 9 for ¥6,800, Ni no Kuni is a role-playing game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. While it was a Nintendo DS exclusive for quite some time, the game is now heading to the PlayStation 3 as well next year with some additional features and an obvious visual upgrade.

Ni no Kuni has not been announced for a North American release.

TalkBack / 4 Heroes of Light Has Depth of a Console Final Fantasy
« on: June 24, 2010, 04:49:26 PM »
Despite its childlike visuals, Square Enix’s Klee Kuo says that Square Enix’s new handheld Final Fantasy is perfect for newcomers and veterans alike.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23512

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light has received some criticism during the past few months due to its childlike visual style. Some gamers have dismissed it as a children’s title and deemed it as not suited to franchise veterans.

Today, Square Enix’s Klee Kuo cleared the air surrounding the matter by saying that even though Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light has a visual appeal that will interest a wide variety of demographics, the game has the depth of a console Final Fantasy title. He later went on to say that the game is also perfect for novices to the series.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light is set to be released in North America this October.

TalkBack / 5th Cell: Scribblenauts Sequel is "Way Better"
« on: June 24, 2010, 04:42:04 PM »
The developer explains the "Super" in the title of their upcoming game.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23511

When Scribblenauts launched for the Nintendo DS late last year, it elicited some criticism regarding its controls. 5th Cell took the criticism to heart, and this week Jeremiah Slaczka addressed the issue, bluntly stating that the new game is "way better" than the original.

When asked about the controls specifically, Jeremiah said that he can't emphasize enough how much they've been improved. "That's what I really want to drill into people's heads. We spent a whole year developing this and taking the original idea and making it awesome."

Continuing on as to why "super" has been added to the title, he claimed that adjectives will allow gamers to let their creative sides shine even more than it did the first time around. He remarked that "You can string all kind of crazy, wacky adjectives together like zombified flying evil apple. You can do anything. Anything you can think of. There are thousands and thousands of adjectives."

Super Scribblenauts is due out for the Nintendo DS this October.

TalkBack / Yoot Saito Hints at Seaman for 3DS
« on: June 24, 2010, 08:35:59 AM »
Creator of the best-selling Dreamcast game says Seaman may be heading to Nintendo’s new portable.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23510

Seaman was released back in the 1990s for the Sega Dreamcast and eventually became its best-selling title, beating out other popular titles such as Resident Evil Code: Veronica.

Yoot Saito, mastermind behind the talking fish sensation, has been hinting at the possibility of the game hitting the Nintendo 3DS recently.

A follower of Saito Tweeted him asking whether or not the original Seaman could be heading to Nintendo’s new portable. Saito responded by saying that he couldn’t get into specifics, but to keep hoping for the game.

Nothing has been confirmed, but with more and more Japanese developers getting their hands on Nintendo 3DS development kits, anything is possible.

TalkBack / SMG2 Tops Media Create Charts Despite Sales Dip
« on: June 24, 2010, 07:55:47 AM »
Xenoblade yields the top spot to Nintendo's other big title, Super Mario Galaxy 2.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23509

Yesterday we reported that Xenoblade fell out of the top spot in Japan’s sales chart, giving it up to Super Mario Galaxy 2. Even though Xenoblade took quite a dip, falling from the top to the fourth position in Media Create sales chart, the title's sales numbers weren't far behind the games in front of it.

Appearing at the top spot for a third non-consecutive week was Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2, which finished the week with sales of 53,000 (down 28%). Two Nintendo DS titles followed close behind it, those being Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective and Art Academy from Nintendo, with sales of 24,000 and 21,000, respectively. Xenoblade can be found in the fourth position, with sales of 21,000 as well, suggesting that it was only narrowly beaten by Art Academy.

Elsewhere on the charts, Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City took the fifth position despite seeing a 67% dip in sales, bringing it to 21,000 for the week. A new Tamagotchi Collection landed in the sixth spot with sales of 17,000. The World Cup fever continues to take Japan by storm, and World Soccer for the PS3 rises one spot to seventh thanks to a 27% increase in sales.

Longtime favorite Friend Collection continues to perform well in Japan and its 14% increase in sales can likely be attributed to new Nintendo DS owners wanting to purchase new games. Rounding out the charts are World Soccer for the PSP at number nine, and Hakuoki at number 10, both with sales of 13,000.

The next couple of weeks should be big weeks in Japan for gaming, as a new Nintendo DSi LL bundle is set to be released with LovePlus+, and a new Inazuma Eleven game is set to be released in the midst of World Cup fever.

TalkBack / Xenoblade Falls From Top Spot in Japan
« on: June 23, 2010, 04:00:10 AM »
Nintendo’s new role-playing game sees a big dip in its second week.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23498

After Xenoblade’s respectable debut last week, many were hoping that good word-of-mouth and additional shipments would keep the game from dropping too far down the charts. Unfortunately for those fans it didn’t happen, as Xenoblade falls from the top spot to number 5 in the preliminary rankings.

Elsewhere on the charts, Super Mario Galaxy 2 climbs back into the top spot for a third week, while Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective from Capcom and Art Academy from Nintendo land in the second and third spots, respectively. Perhaps the reason why these games saw big debuts may be related to the recent price cut for all the Nintendo DS models in Japan.

Falling slightly down the chart into the fourth position was Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City, while Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 falls a mere one spot to the sixth spot. A new Tamagotchi game for the Nintendo DS debuts at number seven, while World Soccer for the PS3 dips to the eighth spot. Rounding out the top 10 are Tomodachi Collection at number nine and Hakuouki for the PS3.

Famitsu Software Sales Rankings (06/14/2010 - 06/20/2010)

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii, Nintendo)
 2. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (DS, Capcom)
 3. Art Academy (DS, Nintendo)
 4. Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City (PS3, Take-Two Japan)
 5. Xenoblade (Wii, Nintendo)
 6. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 (DS, Square Enix)
 7. Where Did You Look Tamagotchi Setchi (DS, Nintendo)
 8. Blue Samurai Challenge Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 (PS3, Konami)
 9. Tomodachi Collection (DS, Nintendo)
 10. Virtual Book Hakuouki (PS3, Idea)

Official software and hardware numbers should be released in the next few days.

Two games for the price of one!
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23484

The second Fire Emblem remake for the Nintendo DS is due out next month in Japan, and Nintendo has been releasing all sorts of juicy tidbits of information about the game. Today they released what is arguably one of the biggest – the inclusion of BS Fire Emblem: Record of Akeneia Wars as bonus content.

BS Fire Emblem – with the "BS" standing for "Broadcast Satellite" – was released for the Super Famicom satellite receiver Satellaview in 1997, and then again in 1999. The game serves as a prequel to the first Fire Emblem game, which was remade for the Nintendo DS two years ago.

The latest Fire Emblem game hits Japan on July 15.

TalkBack / Reggie Comments on Slowing Wii Sales
« on: June 22, 2010, 11:29:52 AM »
As PS3 sales continue to increase as Wii sales fall, Reggie comments on how Nintendo hopes to maintain a lead, even with Sony’s new PlayStation Move.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23483

At a recent investor relations meeting held on June 16, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime commented on how Nintendo hopes to combat the rising sales of the PlayStation 3 and its new motion controls.

When asked about how they are going to respond to PlayStation Move, Reggie was confident in saying that they have a clear path in front of them. “We want to provide compelling experiences for the consumer. We want to do that in a way that has tremendous value for the consumer and that one-two punch, we believe, is going to continue to drive our business. The consumer today can get a Wii configuration that has two fantastic pieces of software and a Wii MotionPlus for $199, and the consumer is responding. We believe that the consumer will respond to Metroid: Other M, Wii Party, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and to all of these fantastic franchises that we’re bringing to bear.”

While it remains to be seen whether or not Nintendo can have another successful holiday period like that of 2009, Reggie commented that if they manage to execute their goal, they will be able to widen the gap versus the other home consoles despite the availability of their new motion controls. He also went on to say that by driving the console's install base, software  sales will increase as well

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Steel Diver
« on: June 20, 2010, 06:04:11 AM »
Originally designed for the Nintendo DS, Steel Diver has now resurfaced for the Nintendo 3DS.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23460

Steel Diver started out as a demo for the Nintendo DS, but after Nintendo realized how much the Nintendo 3DS could add to the title, they switched boats and started designing the title for their new handheld.

Now, six years after it was first shown, Steel Diver has resurfaced for the Nintendo 3DS, and there is no doubt about it that the Nintendo 3DS makes the game look a whole lot better. For gamers who were given the opportunity to play the title at Nintendo’s both at E3, Steel Diver makes gamers feel as though they are viewing into an aquarium.

Steel Diver is an action-simulation game in which gamers use the touch-screen to manipulate submarines through the ocean, using switches and levers on the touch screen to control the speed, depth, pitch and torpedoes of their submarines.

Not much is known about Steel Diver, but given its lengthy development history, gamers should expect to be able to play this within the Nintendo 3DS’s launch window.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Mario Kart
« on: June 20, 2010, 06:03:17 AM »
Mario’s prettiest looking handheld Mario Kart to date.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23459

Every Nintendo system has had its own Mario Kart since the SNES, so it shouldn’t have come as too big of a surprise that Nintendo has plans to bring the franchise to its new handheld, the Nintendo 3DS.

Mario Kart 3DS contains everything that gamers have come to love from the series, from shooting shells to throwing banana peels all over the course. The courses this time around look even nicer than they did in Mario Kart DS, with locations ranging from Wuhu Island to Princess Peach’s Castle. The improved lighting and 3D visuals add to each course as well, easily making this the prettiest looking handheld Mario Kart.

Not much is known about the actual gameplay, but Nintendo has promised that Mario Kart 3DS will take advantage of the Nintendo 3DS’s new connectivity options, including ghost exchange data and expanded local and wireless multiplayer. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will also be used in Mario Kart 3DS, allowing players to race other gamers from every corner of the globe.

No specific release date has been announced for Mario Kart 3DS.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
« on: June 20, 2010, 06:02:25 AM »
One of the best titles of all time is heading to Nintendo’s new portable.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23458

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has long been praised as one of the best games of all-time, and for good reason, too. Not only was it revolutionary for its time, but it managed to take the Zelda franchise in a whole new direction and was used a source of inspiration for many future titles. The game has been re-released several times since its initial launch back in 1998, but none of them have added any significant changes to the game, with the exception of the added difficulty in The Legend of Zelda: Master Quest, That is, until Nintendo releases an updated version to the original classic for the Nintendo 3DS.

Not much is known about Nintendo’s latest handheld Zelda project, but Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Aonuma have promised that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will contain some new features that were absent in the original. One particular example that he mentioned is that in the Water Temple, for instance, instead of having to constantly drag up the menu screen to switch between Link’s ordinary boots and iron boots, Mr. Aonuma has promised that the touch screen will be used to make that much easier.

One of the more notable enhancements to the game based on screenshots is that the graphics have been redone to take advantage of the Nintendo 3DS. While only six screenshots depicting Link riding Epona in Hyrule Field have been released so far, it’s no trouble to tell that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D looks much improved overall.

Much secrecy still surrounds The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, but hopefully all that will change with the lead-up to the Nintendo 3DS. No firm release date has been set, but don’t be too shocked if it releases near the Nintendo 3DS.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
« on: June 17, 2010, 12:27:45 AM »
London's future is in Professor Layton's hands.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23414

Professor Layton and his apprentice, Luke, have been on quite a few bizarre adventures, but none of them can compare to where they end up in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

After receiving a mysterious letter from a future version of Luke, Professor Layton comes to the realization that London is in some serious trouble, and the only one who can set things right is him.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future promises to bring more of everything that fans of the series have come to love. 165 new puzzles are now available to solve, and Level-5 has promised a challenging and fun title.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

One of the newer features of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is the new “superhint” option, which points players towards a solution. Hint coins are also scattered throughout the game, and these can be used while solving puzzles to receive hints.

As with every other Professor Layton title to date, downloadable puzzles will be available after launch on September 20 for a limited time.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: PilotWings Resort
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:20:01 AM »
Nintendo returns to air sports, this time at Wii Sports Resort’s Wuhu island.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23366

Wuhu Island was popularized by many console games like Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus, but never has the island appeared on a handheld. That is, until PilotWings Resort was announced for the Nintendo 3DS.

In vein to the aerial activities in Wii Sports Resort, PilotWings Resort allows players to soar through the skies of Wuhu Island, whether it be in a hang glider, jet pack or airplane. Each of these three types of travel have their own unique controls, thus resulting in different experiences for each means of transport.

PilotWings Resort offers a wide range of activities to complete, as well as challenges such as competitive flights in order to obtain a high score. The game also has a more casual mode that allows players to explore Wuhu Island at their own leisurely pace.

Just like any other of Nintendo’s new 3DS games, Nintendo promises to take full advantage of its new handheld with PilotWings Resort. It remains to be seen whether or not PilotWings Resort is just the aerial activities from Wii Sports Resort ported to Nintendo’s new handheld, but Nintendo has promised a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else. A release window has not been set as of yet.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Animal Crossing
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:02:44 AM »
Time to pack your things and move into a new village yet again!
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23365

Animal Crossing: Wild World was one of the Nintendo DS’s biggest titles, selling in excess of five million copies in Japan alone. It shouldn’t be too big of a shocker that Nintendo hopes to carry on that success to the 3DS with a new Animal Crossing title.

Not much is known about Nintendo’s new entry into series, but judging by a press release and some screenshots, Nintendo is hoping to take the franchise in a new direction and use the enhanced wireless functionality of the Nintendo 3DS to make the online experience even deeper.
