Conduit 3DS Impressions

A potential prequel in development, it already looks pretty close to Conduit 2 graphical quality.

Recently, Eric Nofsinger stated that High Voltage Software would likely have a Conduit 3DS demo ready for GDC. The developers have not disappointed, and I had a chance to check out the FPS's transition to the handheld. Now, Conduit 3DS is still very much in the concept stage, but good technical progress has already been made.

What I saw consisted of a tech demo where the developers ported the Conduit 2 engine and assets over from Wii to 3DS. Several environments were available, and they looked very nearly like their Conduit 2 counterparts (more on Conduit 2 to come). Already, everything was running smoothly and with great detail, and with good 3D depth.

High Voltage Software is still in the experimental phase, and controls haven't been locked down. Right now, they've implemented a scheme similar to many DS FPSes, where moving is controlled by the control pad, shooting is performed with the L button, and targeting, jumping, and weapon switching is done with the stylus (or buttons). The acknowledged problem here is that this scheme is a relatively unstable combination, especially in a high-intensity fire fight, meaning that it can be difficult to keep the system held in such a way to keep 3D in focus. This is a problem that developers and/or players are going to have to adapt to if they are to play such games in 3D, and it will be interesting to see what HVS comes up with.

The story of the game is very much up in the air, but High Voltage Software would like to explore the Conduit universe even more, and perhaps create a prequel that will fill in the backstories of some of the more mysterious characters introduced in the Wii games, the second one in particular.

The developers are also experimenting with multiplayer possibilities.

Though still extremely early, Conduit 3DS looks very promising, and I can't wait to see where it leads.

Knowing how HVS like to push all the features of the Wii, I really hope they do the same with the 3DS with StreetPass, local play and online etc
Wouldn't it be cool to collect usernames of Conduit players as you passed by them, adding them to a "rivals list" of something from which you could challenge them online later.
This would ensure that they would live relatively near to you, minimising lag when you played against them online!


I'm also hoping for something similar to Street Fighter 4 3D where you can challenge someone locally if they're playing in the vicinity.
Imagine an accidental LAN party happening on the bus/train, awesome.

That sounds like a great idea. I hope they thought of it too or you guys pass it on to them next time you talk.

They didn't respond to my email with the forum's story ideas for Conduit 2.

They're a business. Them taking even just the slightest amount of input from consumers is amazing in my opinion, leaving them with a friendly "We're buddies, right? :D" image, thus I wish them only the best of luck. Here's hoping they can get in on the fresh 3DS market before it becomes flooded with crap. I reckon their efforts and dedication deserve to be rewarded.

Maybe they could try a Metroid Prime-styled system, where you need to hold down a button before stationary aiming can be done. The Condyeet series seems a bit more fast-paced though, so it's anyone's guess as to how that'd turn out. But yeah, the current FPS system is pretty damned flawed.

I am not a fan of shooters on the DS, however, I loooooved The Conduit, can't wait for C2 and have faith that HVS would do a good job with a 3DS game.

I do NOT want a 3DS port of either game, but if they did a sequel or a prequel??? sold, HVS, sold!

PS - I do not really like shooters, but The Conduit franchise does not have the aspects of shooters that I hate.  Namely: roid-raging d-bag protagonists and a general hatred for all other human participants.  thanks, HVS, for keeping the genre relevant to me!
