Would there even be any functional difference between a D-pad with 8 sensors and one with 4? It doesn't seem like there would be.

In addition to what MegaByte has contributed, there's an issue with "sensor accuracy" as well.  Depending on how well the D-pad is constructed, you could have issues with reading diagonal directions in a controller with only four (like many old third-party controllers had issues with).  Of course, we've never had problems like those.  :reggie:

Holy crapballs.  How does one even play that many hours of Mario Kart Wii.  There's not THAT much depth to the game, seriously.  Wow.

Color me impressed.  VERY impressed.

Not much depth?  Really?  Maybe if you turn off your brain and not consider item trajectories (both to and from your rivals), item placements (reading your rivals' favorite routes and dropping items in key locations), reading ahead for environmental cues (for example, the tide in Peach Beach or the paths of Wigglers on Maple Treeway), strategically slowing down slightly to position yourself for a draft boost on a rival, etc, etc...

Mario Kart is actually one of the deepest racers ever, and it's the fact players of every level can enjoy it that makes the game so popular and addicting.

And NOA_Reggie still owns the track.  Always looking for new challengers to punt off Reggie Road.  :reggie:

PAX Prime is quickly approaching, and as always, there is certain to be a booth selling hundreds of retro games and consoles, all refurbished and working once again. I realize that in the long run, Virtual Console would be cheaper, but I do not have a Wii and will probably never get one unless I buy it from one of my friends for much less than retail price.

So, if we look at my statement there, what I am claiming is that I don't expect this game to feature any mechanics that make it one of the best RPGs available.  That is probably a safe assumption.  Combine that with the fact that I don't have the time to play every RPG out there... In fact, I don't have the time to play 5% of the games out there... when looking at two games that have equally rewarding mechanics, one of which looks substantially better, and I own every system already... why on earth would I pick up the Wii one.

Assumptions, assumptions.  How can you even qualify "equally rewarding mechanics" for a game that has shown one trailer, especially for a genre that has a ridiculous amount of variety in battle mechanics?  And no, it's not "your obligation" to be a Debbie Downer and flop in with a "Gonna go buy a PS3 game instead, because it's clear that this game can't top it."  That's not discussion; that's trolling, plain and simple.  And if you don't have time to play Wii games anymore (because I'm pretty sure every genre on Wii has touched PS3 by now, and why play any Wii games when you have a PS3!), then you shouldn't even have a Wii, and most certainly shouldn't be a moderator on a Nintendo fan site.

If you call that the SOLE BASIS of visuals, whatever.

You said it, not me.  There's absolutely no other way to take what you said.  Making up reasons to justify your troll (I still can't get over "equally-rewarding mechanics") doesn't cut it.  Especially when you vehemently defend a game that DISCARDS features that fans of the RPG genre have come to expect over the years.  :reggie:

Do videogame companies ever read reviews or make an effort to figure out what fans think of their games?

We look at impressions from gamers as a whole, not just "comments by IanSane."  Because, honestly, we don't give a **** about the opinions of people who don't like anything.  :reggie:

I am very pleased that so many people are excited about this re-imagining of one of the great classics and hallmarks of the history of video games.  Fans and hardcore gamers have been asking for a remake to this game for a long time, and seeing an opportunity to apply our new 3-D technology to a classic (as well as transfer development tools to our new platform), this decision was easy to make.  :reggie:

There is some criticism that we are "recycling old content."  I would say this is a good point, however we did not lead our 3DS presentation with this game.  We silently announced this game during the Electronic Entertainment Exposition in order to please our fans that follow us like hawks, and most are ecstatic. :reggie:

I, too, also hope our strongest critics please make sure their criticisms are the thoughts of their own feelings, and not the cheaply-attained, phony outrage that the internet is known for.  It would be embarrassing for one of our strongest critics to consider the possibility of a purchase of a remake to one of our greatest games, only to turn one hundred and eighty degrees and chide us when we provide it along with new games a scant month later.  One would think his opinion is not genuine, that he is impossible to please, and that he is a slave to argument in lieu of open discussion. :reggie:

Most of Nintendo's franchises wouldn't really benefit from orchestrated music. Galaxy does. Zelda certainly would. Maybe Fire Emblem would, and I suppose it would be fun in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way to use it in Star Fox. Apart from that, it doesn't come close to justifying the immense costs involved.

Again, people never really consider the ramifications of orchestrated music.  That is, as far as I know there has yet to be a way to make it dynamically flow with the action.  Take for example a game like Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, in which the music is constantly shifting to what is happening on screen.  You don't see this in Super Mario Galaxy, and I personally see the soundtrack as compositely inferior even though the music and composition itself is fantastic.  It would be even more glaringly obvious in our next console Zelda, as this dynamic change has been extensively used in both The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess (moving from the field, to fighting an enemy, to the strikes made during combat, etc).  So for the sake of an engaging experience, I personally stand against orchestrated music, or at least for it to be kept to the bare minimum for cinematic scenes.  But only because I'm nice like that.  :reggie:

Whatever Sony's doing with the PSN, it's effectively bricked non-Slim PS3 models like mine since we can't access any PS3 games.  I'm not personally screwed so badly since I can still play PS2 and PS1 games on the thing (in fact, I'm playing Grandia for the first time as I type this), but this really angers me.  Did they really not bother to test this server update with the older PS3 models, and what does this mean for the day the Playstation Network eventually goes down for good?
