Ooh I really want Pinball Arcade for the 3DS. And I'm excited by the prospect of playing pinball on the WiiU tablet. Just seems neat, to play with the screen right in front of you with headphones, but not on the big TV nor on your handheld. Weird, maybe, but I think more compelling than we realize without having one in our living rooms.... yet...

Is it really safe to assume the NA and EU versions of this game will release alongside the Japan version? Seems like a large assumption to make (one I hope is true, but still).

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive #22 Poll: WiiWare Edition
« on: April 12, 2012, 10:14:24 AM »
Personally I was excited when I heard WiiWare was the platform of choice. I just moseyed through the service for kicks a few weeks ago and found a bunch of games I didn't pick up when they released but am very curious about. Off the top of my head:

-Rock 'n Roll Climber
-Bonsai Barber
-Art Style: light trax
-Snowpack Park

And I'm just realizing all of these are Nintendo-published. But I think that's the problem....even if they're Nintendo properties, if they're not one of the "known" franchises, people scoff at them as junk without even trying them. Sure, these aren't going to be Zelda-deep experiences, but they seem like games you can't get anywhere else and have a unique and clever take on what a game can be. For all the people who say they want Nintendo to create new IPs...  they've been making new properties for years now in the downloadable space. Just haven't done a great job selling them.

TalkBack / Re: Colors! 3D Impressions
« on: March 18, 2012, 01:29:29 PM »
This is intriguing. The idea of 5 layers of 3D and full color certainly sounds appealing. But also a bit daunting, which is I'm sure why Nintendo opted for the simple B&W 2-layer system Swapnote uses.
BTW: I know there's a separate thread for this, but I'm looking for other Swapnoters that actually draw to fill out my Friends List, so if you're interested: 4682-8453-5062.

I can't believe there's an extended discussion on Let's Catch here...  the very same day I finally downloaded the game! I love Let's Tap for what it tries to do, and have been very curious about its WiiWare cousin for awhile, especially after learning more about the Story Mode. Excited to try it. (Also, it's baseball season, so I'm feeling up for a good round of toss.)

I've been curious about this game since I first saw the box on the shelf. When I found out it was from Grasshopper, that curiosity spiked. Haven't taken the plunge yet. But it seems like the kind of odd, different experience I'd like.

Too bad Alex didn't like it. And sure, 1/4 of the way through the game is plenty time for a preview of sorts. But to publish something with such outlandish negativity? Calling the pricing "disgusting"? Exclaiming how all of us independent-minded consumers out here should not even consider buying the game because you aren't enamored with it? Seems a bit ridiculous. I'm all for opinionated pieces. But I'm also for level-headedness and editing a hot-tempered first draft into a something a bit more palatable.
But whatever! I hope others like it more than you did.

What J.P. said...  this type of game is vastly more appealing to me on a handheld. And the 3D seems a perfect fit for the grandiose battles.  Might make me take the plunge.  Hope it becomes a breakout hit in the west.

I hope they bring this stateside. One of the 8-4 guys talked about it in their recent podcast and had similarly positive/weird things to say. I'm loving the wacky eShop Nintendo is giving us these days. Keep it up, sirs and madams!

Nice write-up, Neal. Jools seems like a guy with his head in the right way. I bought Moon on a whim, and though it didn't compel me to finish it, the tech was impressive and made me pay attention to Renegade Kid. After a bit of hesitation I've finally plunked down the 9 bucks for Mutant Mudds and I'm glad I did. So happy 2D pixel art is alive and well, especially on a 3D system. Perfect fit, oddly. Keep the goods coming, Mr. Watsham.

"I'm not sure I'd argue Motion+ succeeded as a peripheral and I certainly wouldn't argue the Balance Board did (yes, it sold a lot, but entirely because of Wii Fit; it got barely any support outside of that, and wasn't even available separately)."
--
Motion + succeeded because Wii Sports Resort sold gangbusters. It's still in Top 20 in Japan. The Balance Board was even more of a success -- how is this even a question? Since it wasn't available separately from Wii Fit, there's no point in even discussing them separately. From Nintendo's perspective, Balance Board = Wii Fit. One was made to make the other possible. They don't care if Rock 'n Roll Climber uses it or not. They made a product and they sold millions. Same thing with Motion +. It gave them the ability to do Resort. Did it bring with it a wave of awesome new M+ games? No. But Resort sold millions. Bam, success. Not to mention their premier franchise depends of M+, and will, it seems, moving on in the future. I predict once Motion + is standard remote from the beginning of a generation with Wii U, you'll see some amazing uses of it that wouldn't materialize with the split user base of the Wii.

Anyway. My nephew has a uDraw tablet. Then again, my nephew's parents bought a Tatsunoko vs. Capcom joystick to play Pac-Man on VC. So.....

Everyone having this conversation in this forum is tech-savvy. But this group constitutes a small percentage of Nintendo's hoped-for customers. It's easy to think a company should care only about whatever group you belong to and have them make decisions accordingly. But they are fishing in a much bigger pond, and we are but tiny minnows. Embrace it. Accept it. Enjoy the magic they offer, and get your tech fix elsewhere.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive #21: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:22:34 PM »
This is my first Fire Emblem, and though I'm not even that far into it (Chapter 6), I'm about 1000% more excited for the 3DS version now. A few quick thoughts (that have probably been stated above, so my apologies):

-I vote NO on voice-acting. To anyone who complains that this is like reading a book with all the text, um, that's the point right? I'd much rather imagine what these characters sound like than be forced to hear them in some unnatural way. Makes it quicker, too. Can read faster than I can listen to pre-recorded audio.

-Perma-death is a fascinating experience. This game is like the polar opposite of 3D Land in how it handles player lives. I think I have about 170 lives in 3D Land right now. Just played Chapter 5 in FE and two of my people died, and man does that hurt. Even if it screws me in the end, I can't make myself replay the level. Since that kind of defeats the point, right? If I lose, I lose. That's my story. Not every hero saves the day. Maybe he'll die valiantly. And if so, that will be my experience. Otherwise, the whole concept of permanent death is moot and becomes an impediment to playing the game (the annoyance of re-starting, etc.). I'll take my chances and feel the emotional tug of actual consequences.

-Umm....   it's complicated? But enjoyable enough so that even if you don't get all the quirks and nuances, there's a simpler way to play. Not as efficient probably, but I'm having fun. And because of the dire consequences, you learn fast how to better strategize.

-With about a half-dozen games on 3DS I want to be playing right now, I keep coming back to my little GBA Fire Emblem icon. A good sign. Good choice, Retroactive votes. Excited to hear the conversation....

Mr. Sane, I respectfully disagree.
If 3rd parties aren't willing to learn and adapt to an inventive, new way of thinking, and can't deliver compelling content unless it's me-too ports across the board, frankly I don't care that much about their games. (Granted, I now own a 360, so I can get the goods there if I feel so inclined.)
My point: Since getting a 360, I've bought a whole bunch of HD games I'd missed out on (Fallout 3, Orange Box, Enslaved, Bioshock) and to date I've played one. For some reason I just can't get my motivation up to slog through these cut-scene heavy, story-driven games. But the prospect of strange innovative experiences through Wii U, even if they're bite-sized or "casual" or family-friendly, gets my juices flowing more than a shinier, bigger, "badder" game. But I guess that's just my taste.
My point #2: I'd rather have another Wii-like system that changes the paradigm, even if AAA devs ignore it, than a me-too Super Wii that's the same but with more horsepower so as to allow cross-platform ports.

I really want to try this, especially after all the praise I've seen it get...  and if you follow the creator (@JoolWatsham) you'll see a near-endless stream of retweeted love.  But I'm still chipping away at 1. Unlocking 3DLand's secret level, 2. Pushmo puzzles, 3. Kart online, 4. Freakyform collecting, 5. all the stuff on 360 I've bought and neglected...   so I'm just not sure. I want to support Renegade Kid, and awesome 3rd party indie devs on the eShop in general, but I hate using that as a reason to buy a game. Think I'll wait until the fever strikes. Perhaps I'll play some WarioLand Virtual Boy to get me in the mood.

Hasn't this series been reinvented, like, 6 times in the past decade? Not really interested. Although if anyone can make a capable modern-day brawler using licensed characters, it's Rocksteady, so we'll see...

Two things:
Zach, I'm glad I don't live in or around Alaska. Please keep your yogurt cannons to yourself, thanks.
And Alex! Poor Alex. Your disappointed list was, well, disappointing. In my eyes, the good far outweighed the bad this year, and I'm sorry to see a fan come to such a conclusion. But hey, it's good to have such an honest perspective about things. We just disagree, is all. (And come on, Nintendo Show 3D and the Video channel have had some nifty stuff, if you ask me.)
May 2012 be all that you hope for.

I, too, was pleasantly surprised. But I understand Jonny's reluctance. My apartment certainly doesn't need any more "junk" lying around, and while I wouldn't categorize this package as such, they're technically not very useful...  but I still aim to make a neat 3D stop-motion video with them soon. And my girlfriend likes wearing a new pin every week or so. So...   I'll take it! (But yes, SNES controller or game soundtrack CDs or something else would be nice, too.)

TalkBack / Re: All 50 WiiWare Demos Reappear at Once
« on: January 13, 2012, 11:34:08 AM »
Huh. Quite odd. A welcome addition, but strange nonetheless.
I was initially excited by the prospect of demos, but I must say, once I dl'ed a few of them, almost without exception I'd get that first taste of the game, say "it's alright," and then put it away. I don't think I ever was convinced to buy the full product. Whereas I'm sure, if I'd just dl'ed the game itself, I would have felt obliged to sink more time into it, since I paid for it, thereby unlocking and experiencing more of the game and probably enjoying it a great deal.
I think TYP said something like this on a recent RFN...   and I agree. Demos tend to sap my anticipation for a game. But that's just me.

Oh man, I hope the Famicast hour gets unlocked, as I've been loving the 8-4 Play podcast lately. And I'd definitely grab that NIS pack if I won a prize...  been wanting to check out Sakura Wars for awhile. But geez, y'all had to schedule the live event during the Michigan-Nebraska game! (Isn't there a Cornhusker on staff? If so: Go blue.) Anyhoo, I'm chipping in some $ and really look forward to listening in, either now and then LIVE or hopefully the recorded file...   Good luck!

Sort of excited for this. I have the PC game, and I've enjoyed it but eventually got confused as to where to go next and haven't gone back to it. Having it on the 3DS might make me be a bit more patient with it. Definitely a cool mechanic and followthrough... love seeing games like this coming to eShop. Might wait for NightSky.
