Personally I liked Perfect Dark (N64), the co-op was decent and it even offered counter-op.
i was hoping for so much more from the counter-op before the game was released, so i was a little dissapointed when i finally played it.
there were very few ways you could interupt Joannas objectives so most of the time you had to try to just snuff her out of the mission but the default gun you had as a Datadyne guard (the CMP150 i believe) was a pretty weak gun and even if you locked on to Joanna she could run right past you if the player used straffing effectively. the gaurds were too slow compared to her and extremely weak, she could take you out with only a few shots.
the suicide pill was a usefull item but usually respawned you when it was too late and you'd either have joanna run right passed you or you'd get control of your new character too late and get your head shot at. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0">
it was no fun to play so my friends and i usually stuck to co-op. still, though, i'd love to play the kind of counter-op game i imagined and not something that feels like a gimped death match. i would or prefered having counter-objectives that could ruin the main characters mission or make her have to take a different approach to something. for instance: say one of joannas objectives is to destroy a generator but as the counter-op you can rush to the location and lock the room from the inside so she cant get to it. say its a power generator and now that it cant be destroyed she cant have the cover of darkness to protect her. there could be mutiple alt. objectives to meet if the counter-op has changed what you can or cant do, that way theres a bit of a strategy eliment to the gameplay. you could even have mini-boss type encounters where at a certain point it becomes a deathmatch and once either player reaches a certain percentage of health you retreat and have to carry on completeing (or destroying) the mission. that could ultimately lead to a final showdown in a level that ultimately decides life or death. then, depending on who wins the next level will be altered somewhat..
hm thats a small example, i think i can flesh out my ideas better, but i think it gets what i imagine across.
maybe the n64 wasnt right for the job or maybe a (dedicated)fps wasn't the type of game that should have counter-op. but who knows, maybe now we can see someone take a stab it at now that we have bigger levels and better AI. one can dream..
