RE: Metroid Movie in the Works
« on: January 21, 2003, 07:56:19 PM »
As long as Fred Savage isn't in the movie, it's probably going to be a hit.

Variety.com is reporting that Hollywood producers Warren Zide and Craig Perry (whose credits include Final Destination and American Pie) have acquired the rights to make a movie based on Nintendo's Metroid game series.  The producing duo is currently seeking out writers, directors, and some actors and actresses to fill out the roles of all involved.  Here's the preliminaries, courtesy of Variety:

The story is set in a once peaceful galaxy, which has its prosperity shattered by a startling discovery: On a routine mapping expedition of a planet, a survey crew discovers a new airborne life form -- the Metroid. Able to engulf other living beings, feed on their energy, and multiply in great numbers, they prove a terrifying menace. Female bounty hunter Samus Aran is commissioned by the Galactic Federation to eliminate the pests, but she soon discovers that pirates with a stolen Metroid specimen are plotting to breed an build an unstoppable army.

No other information has been revealed about the film other than this small tidbit.  Of course, when we learn more about the Metroid movie, we'll be the first to inform you about it.

damn, so its not an origin movie like i was hoping..

Guy who made final destination?  I hope this doesn't turn into a comedy like FD2 was.  (One of the best comedy movies of the entire year, i might add)

edit: wait, didn't he also make butterfly effect?

I really hope that the "cast" other than Samus is shown only at the beginning...Samus needs to be alone for the "Metroid-ness" to really show...

Fill out all of the roles involved? Count them: Samus, Voice of Chozo, voice of ridley voice of other stuff...

Not many roles to fill.

As long as it doesnt become a Romantic Comedy I might see this.

This might work if the movie was like Samus + support team in som orbiting ship that she called into every 15 or so minutes of movie time.  It would be like CG action + plot fill-in-the-blanks, which could work.  But Really I am scared of the potential result of this project.

I'm not scared of how this might turn out.  I'm expecting it to suck.  It it does, than I'm not let down.  If it doesn't, I'm pleasantly surprised.  Either way I'm seeing this movie when if -_________- it comes out.

Oy, good luck.

Hey, the Princess Bride kicked ass, and Fred Savage was in that, if I recall correctly.  Don't make assumptions.

I´m more worried about the new Transformers movie being a flaming trainwreck personally. How would a live-action Transformers movie even work???

As far as I am concered the only person who in mind has the right to put on the Power Suit is Sarah-Michelle Gellar.  When I close my eyes, she is who I see as Samus.

I could see her as Samus.

Then again she would probably be needed only for the end when Samus takes of her helmet..

That could be the big gimmick to get people in the theatre. Cast some hugely popular female star as Samus for the final de-helmeting scene but keep her identity a secret. She could do the voice for the Samus while in the helmet but it would be synthesized to sound different. People would have to watch the film to find out who she is. It could draw a huge amount of publicity and rumors and speculation would run rampant. Of course it would only work if they actually got someone really famous like Angelina Jolie. Sarah Michelle Gellar could be ok too, since she's at least really popular with young people who will obviously be the film's target audience.

I still think Jennifer Garner would be a short-list for a potential Metroid movie. But then Metroid would only work if, and stressing if, verbal dialogue occurs at the beginning ONLY. But, would you pay for a movie where it's 98% silence?
