And this "steal our ideas" crap is really picking my ass.  People only steal really awesome ideas and Nintendo's "top secret" ideas of the last five years have all been really lame and thus not stolen.

Sony stole Nintendo's connectivity idea.

Anywho, folks, IT'S NOT OVER. THE DELAY IS PART OF THE 'GAME'. No way am I deluding myself. I am certainly not crying. All our wildest dreams will come true. Just wait a little bit more......it'll happen.....I know it will....

Look at the painting in the club nintendo picture. Doesn't it look like sort of like this?
Think there's anything to either of these images?

Don't know if anyone's caught this. From the revolution page on nintendo.com:  "There's much more to Revolution that will be revealed over the coming months."

indy developers making games with SNES graphics that can utilize the REV's gyroscopic (or whatever) controllers? This excites me greatly.

hey shouldn't have even bothered to focus on Revolution at all during Iwata's presentation, other than showing the same picture that had just been released and said "This is Revolution - It will change the way you play. I would like to tell you more about about, but sadly I can't at this time. Perhaps next year, at E3".

Too much bad press. Nintendo's no-show would be reported everywhere, and a surprise unveiling might not be able to combat the negative vibe. In fact, people would probably spin it as a desperate, last minute move.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: So, list of Games you'd download?

if we look at Apple's 99 cents for a 4-5 MB download we get a pretty good idea of what it costs per MB to deliver content. NES games are WAY smaller than this, the cost would be almost nothing.

to me, a 3 minute song isn't worth nearly as much as a game I can play for hours, regardless of megabytes.
I'd say $3-5 would be a good range for NES/SNES games. Maybe as low as $2.50 for especially short games. Maybe as high as $10 for games like ALTTP. $10-15 for N64 games. That's still dirt cheap compared to what you'd have to pay to buy them used or on gameboy.

This is awesome. I'm giddy. I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said..... I don't want to get my hopes up....but it makes too much sense.
- The e3 videos on the website felt like they were leading up to something big. Not only did they get me very excited, but they made me feel like Nintendo had an ultra-cool plan in the works, and Nintendo has never done anything like that before.
-The "think with your right brain" and "puzzle-box" comments are way too strange to just be throw-away marketing chatter. ("Be prepared to let your right brain run wild" was the last thing said at the conference! Could they have picked an odder note to go out on?)
- Announcing the details of the Revolution before the conference, without announcing the bad news that nothing else would be shown, was a very strange move from a marketing perspective.
- aries has gotten everything right so far, and he's apparently saying more will be shown on thursday.
- IGN hasn't been whining about Nintendo's poor showing, which is very uncharacteristic.
- Nintendo has never shown how a system will look before explaining what it will do before now.
- Nintendo, before e3, said that everything would be shown at e3.
- there's no way we won't find out all about Revolution once third parties get their hands on it, so why wouldn't Nintendo unveil the system now?

Right... I'm just watching from the sidelines now... I don't believe this anymore. It's too complicated.

Becasue different information is comming from different sources, does the complexity really matter? I mean, couldn't there be a core of truth (Nintendo will show Revolution on Thursday), while a whole lot of bs (Nintendo will show these specific games, and these people are in on it, and this is tied into it too) is being thrown into the mix?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:REV: mainstream reaction and press coverage

I'm betting they'll release some specs and explain some Rev-concepts in the coming days/weeks.

Well, if they were planning on releasing specs why would they do it any other time than at their big conference?

More mainstream coverage:

Top story in the BBC's technology section (hooray)
"Nintendo reveals its revolution - Nintendo shows off its new home console, the Revolution, but technical details are scarce."

MSNBC, on the other hand, is much less kind.

It's a really, really cool looking system. I could see this turning into the fashion accessory that everyone was saying the psp would be.
And is that real metal?

As for people saying there are two many handhelds on the market, keep in mind it's the games, and not the systems, that are important. It's actually advantageous for Nintendo to offer the ability to play gba games on as many systems as possible. And, actually, I'm hoping revolution will be able to play them right out of the box.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:REV's mainstream media coverage
« on: May 17, 2005, 11:38:37 AM »
Well, the mainstream reaction is comming in....
and it's not half bad. I was expecting Nintendo to be completley trashed by everybody, but it doesn't really look like that's happening. The media seems to be eating the new gameboy up (http://www.cnn.com/TECH/). Same for the Revolution's extended backwards compatability...although the PS3 clearly still has the most hype.

Look at the offical playstation E3 board. (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board?board.id=e3) Alot of people are going nuts over the 20-year year backwards compatability... and a good deal are ambivelant about the PS3. Look further at this piece on the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/4555721.stm, where the reaction to the PS3 seems decidly mixed. Look at other message boards, where many seem surprised that Nintendo showed so much.

The press and reaction have been kind of bleh, because the presentation was kind of bleh. But the important thing is that Nintendo isn't getting bad press out of this, at least not yet. And, people aren't really writing off Nintendo's console either. Was Nintendo right after all? I think they might've shown just the right amount to stay on the mainstream radar...while saving themselves for Revolution's true unveiling that will send out massive shockwaves to be felt all over the world by gamers and non-gamers alike.

Or am I missing the boat here? Has the reaction actually been terrible?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Live?
« on: May 17, 2005, 09:52:23 AM »
It's true. The ball was in Nintendo's court and they dropped it.

But, a good product will trump a good presentation any day of the week. The DS unveiling was 'late', and Sony hyped up the PSP to no end. But the DS is winning right now because Nintendo had a better product, a better price and a better launch strategy.

Right now I'm thinking Nintendo didn't unveil the Revolution because they knew they could either reveal everything or nothing. Showing footage would mean giving away their revolutionary display. Showing the controller would mean revealing their revolutionary control. Showing Miyamoto's big flagship game would be utterly pointless without giving away the first two things I mentioned. Showing third party support would mean admitting that they don't really have any yet... and showing specs, in abscense of anything else, would be suicide if they aren't quite up to snuff.

The important thing is that there isn't any idication that Nintendo is heading in the wrong direction. The console design shows that they are willing to appeal to the mainstream, the download play and internet strategies sound excellent...and I'd bet anything that the controls, visuals and gameplay they're working on will be amazing.

It's also important to remember that, when everything rests on unproven revolutionary technology, showing your hand too early can be a huge, huge mistake.

As long as they show everything THIS YEAR, and they actually have something exceptional to show (which I'm sure they do), Nintendo could still easily mop the floor with the competition. Microsoft and Sony have apparently already given us almost everything they have....and they didn't have much.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Live?
« on: May 17, 2005, 09:13:16 AM »
There probably will be surprise revelations, in the months (if not days) ahead. IN fact, there's probably no way we won't find out all about revolution as more developers get their grubby hands on it. So why not control how we get the information with a whiz-bang performance right now?
Sigh. I guess it's important to remember that PS2 and Revolution won't be comming out until next year. If the Revolution is truly revolutionary, it should still knock the wind out of the ps3's sails before launch. Nintendo's lacklustre presentation matters to us, but won't really matter to casual gamers in the long run.

underwhelming. Gameboy Micro was cool. Zelda's amazing. I'm now convionced that revoloution will be great....so, I guess it worked. But man, what a let down.
Hopefully there'll be a spaceworld this year.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: First Revolution Picture! (Plus new details!)
« on: May 17, 2005, 06:51:21 AM »
First, the system looks awesome. A little bland, maybe....but the blue light completley sells it. My biggest concern is actually the tiny buttons. GameCube's gigantic power/reset/open buttons made the system a lot easier to use.

Second, don't put too much weight into the 2-3x powerful statement. It means next to nothing. I think usa today or whomever it was put perrin's (paraphrasing) 'it's not the power, it's what you do with it' statement there just for dramatic effect. Even so, note that that is a lot better than saying 'it's not the power, it's the games, stupid'.

What I'm hoping is that Nintendo has learned the art of knowing when to downplay things, and when to, you know, surprise everyone by announcing the system is actually more powerful than the xbox 360. Then everyone will be like 'OMG! AMAZING! More powerful than the XBOX 360!' instead of 'meh. Not as powerful as the ps3, eh?'. I just hopee Nintendo isn't giving the mainstream media the chance to say 'on the one hand, nintendo has offered the most innovative console, on the other hand, it is the least powerful.' There should be no other hand. Revolution is comming out later than 360, it needs to match the specs.

15 minutes to go! Or...is that an hour and 15?

ya, they may not require developers to make HD games, but I'm convinced there will be support. Statements in a NYtimes article with no source don't mean much.

I love the logo. Though the font used for "twilight princess" initially made me think it was a game boy game. I'm not sure why.
I really like the name. Better than Wind Waker, not as good as Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. Would "Twilight of the Princess" be better?
Nah...

No matter how hard I try, I can't not love Pikachu. He's just so damn cute. Just look at him. Look at him making the victory sign!

There's no way I'm not going there next I'm in New York.

General Gaming / RE: Sony to show PS3 @ E3
« on: May 16, 2005, 06:16:56 PM »
yep. Though, somehow, I was kind of thinking that this upcomming generation would look so good that tiny details would actually become less noticeable. I hate current-generation graphics....I think because they're quasy-photo-realistic, except with a horrible texture here, a jagged edge there, clipping over there, and robotic movement all over the place. Whereas with this new generation I thought playing games would kind of be like watching a pixar movie. I don't know, though. In order for that to happen I guess developers need to learn to create more stylized graphics. Actually, I think 360 games seem to be better in this regard.

General Gaming / RE: PSP GBC Emulatorium
« on: May 16, 2005, 06:01:55 PM »
Well, you could buy the GBA...and then, while the shopkeep has the game case unlocked, you could sneakily steal all the GBC games you want.

Seriously, though, this is why Nintendo needs to get an itunes-style pay-to-download sevice for their old games.

ah, yes. Resident evil probably featured the best humans out of any console game, ever. I think it's because the game didn't really require them to emote. That, and their eyes were really good. It's all in the eyes.  And drawing attention away from the face with hair. And the skin, like you said.
Anyway....

I completley agree with you, artimus... there haven't been any next-gen games announced thus far that I personally interesting. I'm actually really surprised, but Nintendo seems to have been dead-on accurate. Graphics have improved, but gameplay has become almost completley stagnant. I mean, the possibilities of unlimited stuff on-screen, online play, and ultra-realism do excite me.....but I want more.  I want games that are artisitc and creative and simulate things in life other than fighting.
