I just marathoned House of Cards which has a number of things that would make it "high profile". One, it's Netflix's first foray into original programming. They spent a hundred million dollars for distribution rights to the first two seasons of this show. Two, it's executive produced by David Fincher and Kevin Spacey (who also stars) just to name a few. Yes, this is very much a show that wouldn't be out of place at all on HBO.
Of course, none of that would matter if it wasn't good. And it is good. It's very good. If you've seen the West Wing (and if you haven't, do so immediately, it's also on Netflix), House of Cards is the exact opposite of that. Where West Wing restores your faith in America and politics and makes you want to hug Martin Sheen all the time, House of Cards assures you that all politicians are evil, power grabbing bastards who only fight for their own interests and have no care for the public. The show follows Kevin Spacey playing US Congressman Frank Underwood in his quest for political power, usually obtained through nefarious means. The show does an excellent job of weaving a rather complicated web and nothing is wasted, which I always appreciate. Season one does end on a cliffhanger with a couple large plot lines unresolved which is kind of frustrating, but it does set up for a bad ass second season.
Also, the show is very much in contention for Most Handsome TV Show Ever. It looks REALLY good. Like, better than a lot of films. It's not the best show ever. It's not the best show going on right now. But it is very good. Definitely worth your time. Netflix was offering the pilot for free to non-subscribers, I dunno if they still are. Look into that.
And hey look! Rooney Mara's little sister!
