TalkBack / Re: SteamWorld Dig Review
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:05:14 PM »
About 5 hours in and this game is seriously making a case for download of the year for me.  It is a crazy mix of Metroid, Dig-Dug and Minecraft and before this game I would have said "lame."  There are a few cheap deaths here and there but ultimately you learn how to avoid them.  The risk/reward mechanic can feel really rewarding, especially when you make it back to the surface with just a sliver of life and full of loot.  What sold me was Daan's interview on connectivity.  If you are on the fence, go listen to that.  I thought the dev did such a good job clearly relating the concept of the game, while also making it sound fun to play.  I feel like this would have been good enough for a full price release on DS and $8.99 on the eshop makes me feel like I got a hell of a good deal.

Thanks for the interview and review Daan. Top notch.

General Gaming / Re: What games do you never get tired of?

SMB1 and 3 I can play with my eyes closed.  Not sure if that qualifies as "never get tired of" but I certainly wouldn't turn down a play-through of either one.  I rented StarTropics maybe 20 times as a kid and got to the point that I could beat it in one weekend no problem. I got it on VC and still love it.  Never get sick of Dr. Mario and Tetris 2 with friends.  I am finding that KI:U is my modern game I can't put down, I am going through it all again on the quest to beat boss mode on hard, the only thing I didn't get through on the first go.  We'll see if it holds up......

Totally agree with Timmay, when I was a kid I remember literally going from screen to screen trying items on every single pixel.  I just don't have the patience for that anymore.  I am finding that the oracle games have the same issue as Jonny.  Finding the kangaroo to get to Tingle was not intuitive at all.  I never replayed awakening but I know I beat it without a guide and got all of the shells when I was a kid.  Overall great games and all three are about equal in my eyes.

This one looks like it's going to be pretty polarizing, but so was KI:U and I liked it (a lot) so I will probably give it a try.  I also missed the DS games which the bad reviews say are heads and tails better.  In fact, Simon's Quest is the last one I beat so within my frame of reference this may be a ten..... hehe.

Nate, is there any replay value here, i.e. achievements, difficulty settings, unlockables??

Also I should say great impressions Cai, I am actually looking forward to this game even though I have had little interest in Lego games so far.  It seems like you had a good time.  I'm a little worried my OCD completionism may be too much for this though....

Jerry: (as George picks up a broken piece of his father's car) You know, a lot of these scratches will buff right out...

"The Handicap Spot"

Also Planes, Trains and Automobiles

You're going in the wrong direction!  You're going to kill somebody!  You're going the wrong way!  Truck. Truck. What? Aah! Ah ha ha ha ha!  Ah ha ha ha ha!  Well, this isn't so bad.  I thought it would be a lot worse than this.  They'll be able to buff this out.

I did not hear panic and doom.  I did hear that there is some frustration in the voices of genuine Nintendo fans.

We all want the Wii U to do well and we all want Nintendo and third party games.  We know that Nintendo will provide but, how long will it take is the real question.  As for third parties, let the DS and Xbox serve as an example that if the system sells the third parties will show up.

I know this system is not on par with 720 and PS4 but so far playing games on the gamepad has made it worth it for me and I see tons of potential for fun and unique experiences.

I think I remember having these same conversations about 3DS........ bring on the ambassador program!

If my system had not been a gift, this is what I would be buying.  I don't think too many people were waiting for Rayman to buy the system.

Great lists guys!  Great to have Jon back "shaking his rump."  I really enjoyed the discussion.  I feel like I have come back into gaming at a great time where there are so many good 2D games.

I have to say that the La Mulana controls did take some time to get used to but that game makes it worth it.  I think too many are used to the "floatier" Mario controls which are more forgiving than the "lock-in" jumping in La Mulana.  It took a while for my brain to remember to think before jumping.

For the record my top 5:

1) New Super Mario Bros. U
2) Kid Icarus Uprising
3) Paper Mario: Sticker Star
4) Mutant Mudds
5) La Mulana

Late to the game but still need Nintendo friends.....
