Several new details regarding Animal Crossing 3DS were revealed in the latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine.

The article details a previously announced major new addition to the series: the ability to become a village's mayor. As mayor, players will be able to decorate their towns as they see fit. You can add park benches and street lamps. Doing this will please the villagers. To assist the player with his/her mayor duties, a new character has been added whose job is be the mayor's secretary.

Beyond the village, players now will be able to fully customize their homes, from the design of their mailboxes as well as the color of their fences. Furniture pieces can also be taken to a special shop and have them changed. Finally, character outfits will now come in two pieces, which can also be customized.

The village is now going to be larger in this iteration of the Animal Crossing series. Each section of the village will be divided, with the beach now being separate from the village, along with a small island across the sea. Players can also explore beyond the train tracks that lead to the village and discover new areas. One of these areas is a mall that highlights model homes. These model homes can be obtained via StreetPass. Every time a player StreetPasses another player, their home will be put on display. To add to the new home theme, series regular Tom Nook returns as a real state agent.

Animal Crossing 3DS is set to make its debut later in the year.

The mayor aspect seems very interesting to me and maybe is the giant innovation the series needs.

I found an earlier article about this game from 2010, I am shocked that it's now 2012 and there is absolutely no release date for this game, not even an approximate just that sometime in 2012 it will be released.
I'm starting to wonder if this game does exist and if it really will be released this year - wont hold my breath.
So looking forward to the game but the lack of information has become disappointing and I'm sure I'll be over it by the time the wait is up.

This has become standard for Nintendo, they even said that for most games they will wait until a few months before release to really release info.
