New problem. Different Computer.

Laptop won't boot up windows. Gets a blue screen for a split second and then restarts.
I'm pretty sure I just need a boot disc for it, but where can I download one that I can trust?
Windows XP is the OS.

I tried to hook a USB cable up to it thinking I could access the HDD and save some of the data, but that has been unsuccessful.
I don't have a Windows disc to perform a repair install, so my only two options that I can think of are
1) remove the HDD, turn it into an external then hook it up to my PC
or
2) Find a XP boot disc that will let me get the computer up and running.

Does anybody know where I can find one that is trust worthy? I don't want to put my computer at risk to save someone elses.

edit: nevermind, problem solved.

So I finally get around to installing my new CPU (Core2Duo) only to find out that it doesn't come with the cooling gel.

I thought somebody in this thread said that whatever gel it comes with should be good, implying that it would come with it.

Now I have to wait till tomorrow when I can goto Fry's.

Are you sure it's not already applied to the bottom of the heatsink assembly?  Did you buy a retail box or an OEM one?  OEM stuff comes with nothing extra on the assumption that you have vast quantities of it on your assembly line.

I got the retail box.  Blue Intel box with a 45nm sicker on the outside.

When I open it up, there is a fan and a processor and they both look dry. No gel applied or included in the box.

Intel is learning to save money by putting OEM products in pretty retail boxes.

Just to be clear, there's just smooth, bare metal on the heat sink?

You can probably just borrow your friend's stuff again.  It doesn't take much, so those little tubes can go a long way.

^^Looks like a little rubber pad when viewed up close.

^^smooth brushed metal with some text

^^The retail box that it came in. Only other thing in the box besides the plastic case the fan and CPU cam in was the instruction booklet

What does it mean if I can't get my current fan to disconnect from my current CPU?
Its almost like its glued together.

It pretty much is glued together by the solidified thermal grease.

how do I get it loose without destroying it?

is this why people use more expensive thermal grease?

Small flat tip screwdriver usually works. That rubber looking pad will melt and form a conductive seal on the CPU. It would smush if you stuck your finger on it.

I have no citrus cleanser, nor Rubbing alcohol, what else would work?

(I'm trying to avoid another trip to the store if possible)

I have some Lemon Oil Old English Wood Polish.... its citrus based!! I don't think I should use that though.

edit: I have to leave the house now anyway, so what exactly is the best thing to use?

a quick google search suggest acetone or rubbing alcohol. What comes recommended?

I use orange cleaner. Windex would probably work in a pinch

D'oh!  I missed that last night.  Yeah, that was the thermal compound, BnM.

Why do you need to separate the old CPU and heat sink, anyway?

The CPU is latched down inside a metal enclosure and the fan was on top of that. I couldn't get the latch open because the fan was in the way, and when i did finally get it open I couldn't remove teh CPU because the the fan was still attached to it.

Either way, I was just gonna re-use the same fan, but cleaning it off is more of a hassle that I bargained for right now, so I'm just gonna remove the mother board and use the heatsink that came with the CPU.

This whole project just makes me wish I bought a new motherboard and started from scratch.
This whole day isn't going as I planned at all.

I accidentally touched the MB CPU connector while trying to remove the metal flap that hold the CPU down so that I could get all that hardened grease off of it. Is that gonna pose a problem?

After all that work and checking for compatibility before hand, it turns out that the board doesn't support the chip because it runs at 266mhz bus speed or something.

Now I need to re-connect the old CPU and Fan (which was a bitch the first time around). and just get a new motherboard to go with this CPU. Now I wish I had sprung for the Core2Quad instead.  >:(

Did you send an ESD to the board while touching the socket? keep your power supply plugged in to a grounded outlet and touch its metal once in awhile to ground yourself.

1066mhz bus.

I don't think I've ever upgraded a CPU without upgrading the motherboard.  I'd probably have to upgrade yearly to be able to do so without running into some kind of problem, even if the CPU socket's supposedly the same.

The board seems to work fine. After checking the MB manufacture site again, I bought the wrong CPU (one above what I was supposed to get) and the only thing I can even find available thats compatible (C2Quad) is $199.00

That wouldn't be a problem if I could return the CPU I just bought & just add more money to an exchange.

I wish I could clean my old cpu so i can use my own computer

For future reference, if you use GooGone or the like to clean your CPU/heatsink, then you need to go back and thoroughly clean that crap off with rubbing alcohol. Also, I'd recommend getting some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, the stuff that ships on the packaged heatsinks is usually not that great, though of course it still works. You can get it online for pretty cheap, of get it at Radio Shack for $10. Put a rice-grain sized drop on the top of the CPU die, then use a credit card or a razor blade to spread it evenly, and paper thin across the CPU, corner to corner.

I got the gunk off the fan.
« Reply #72 on: June 25, 2009, 12:11:51 PM »
Wanna know how I got my fan clean (CPU is next), I told this girl I gotta go to the store to buy some Rubbing Alcohol, and she told me to use hers. But since she had that, I told her that Acetone was actually recommended. She said she has that too, and handed me Nail Polish Remover. The other girl that was there told me not to use that stuff because its not strong enough, and to go to her house and use her salon strength "Pure Acetone" since she used to do nail a while back.

So I take her keys and go pick it up from her place, but I wasn't very good at getting the gunk off and was trying to resort to chipping at it with the screwdriver (it was on there thick, my friend had said he put a little bit too much on). Well anyway, I met the other girl back at ther house later to give her her keys back, and brought the fan and the CPU. So far she has cleaned the Fan spotless in about an hour and she is gonna do the CPU today!!

Too bad I already ordered a replacement CPU (C2Quad 6700) since I really want to upgrade the performance of my computer.
C2Duo is gonna get put in the next computer I build maybe later this fall. Current Pentium D I have wil probably get tacked onto my MB and see if I can get a 3rd computer up and running in my house just for fun.

Got the Quad core installed. it starts the initial boot up just fine and recognizes the processor, but now it won't boot from my HDD.

It says "Reboot and select proper boot device or or insert proper boot device into selected drive"

I've hit F8 and selected both HDDs that I have installed (because I don't remember which is which) and get the same result with both. What do I do?

Edit: issue resolved. Now posting from my Quad core computer :D

Tight work. I'm going to install a Quad Core in my laptop when I get some extra money. Gotta keep up with the Joneses.
