Team Fortress 2 is just ten bucks on Steam this weekend.  Buy it if you don't already have it!

I tried out Doom and Quake.  Doom had lousy controls and Quake's graphics started glitching out as soon as I loaded the first episode from the hub world.  I'm kind of disappointed. :<

wow I though the controls were fine on both! I sit about 6 feet back from the TV. I didn't adjust settings at all. Also, the graphics problems you are having are interesting... I had none of them. Sorry I can't help anymore. :(
Quake started behaving again after I deleted my cfg.  All I had messed with was the TV overscan thing and the HUD resolution. :/

Doom's awkward 'cause of the lack of crosshair and deadzone.  With no deadzone and no visual feedback about how far you're pointing to the side, it's easy to accidentally start turning to either side.

Quake feels better but I still feel like there should be a larger dead zone or something so my view isn't wobbling around so much as I try to aim.

Anyway, the homebrew channel and homebrew browser are pretty cool.  I'm kinda tempted to download gecko OS and import Klonoa. :b

Uhm, I didn't pirate anything; I own the content files for both games.  Both engines have been open source for a long time; all I downloaded were ports of the executable.

But then I actually like the way Metroid Prime 1 & 2 play.  I don't like how Nintendo made Metroid Prime 3 for close minded rubes who think first person = first person shooter.  To me Metroid Prime 3 is the one with the crappy controls.  Metroid is very similar to Zelda except the whole place is like one huge dungeon and the viewing perspective is different.  So it controlling kind of like the 3D Zelda games made perfect sense to me.
Bologna.  Control-wise, all they did was let you look around more easily, which is highly conducive to exploration, which is what Metroid is all about.  Corruption did feel too first person shooter-y to me, but the controls aren't to blame.  The first Prime with Corruption's control scheme would be like the best 3D Metroid yet.

Google "Ura Zelda" and see what you get.  Sounds like it was supposed to be a lot more than what MQ is.

59
I'll be getting at least the first game just for the added wide screen and Wii controls.  Couldn't care less about online multiplayer.  Hardcore mode doesn't sound like it would actually do much.

60
I suggest The Dynastic Hero or Wonder Boy in Monster World.  They're the same game, 'cept The Dynastic Hero has CD audio for the music and a few graphical changes.  It's a side-scrolling action-adventure with a slightly Metroid-esque progression.

Uhm, EarthBound? :<

Majora's Mask and Terranigma seconded.  But they should release Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia first.

Also Monster World IV comes to mind.  Dragon's Curse was pretty cool, and I really liked The Dynastic Hero.  Need the last of the Wonder Boy series.

Wasn't that the point?  Modify Klonoa's character design for the US release in an attempt to make him more appealing to westerners?

I'll cry if this game doesn't get localized.  But I'll also cry if they actually use that awful Klonoa redesign.

I'm expecting Namco to make me cry. );

What exactly do you have a "lasting appeal" score for if it's just going to reflect the gameplay score?

It's entirely possible for a game to be extremely fun yet also extremely short-lived.  I don't think it reflects gameplay so much as depends on it.

The issue here is whether it's better to consider potential lasting appeal (what y'all seem to be whining about) or effective lasting appeal (what IGN seems to be using).  Either way I don't see why it matters; I thought everyone here believed in valuing review content over scores for exactly this reason.

Meanwhile, Lulu looks down through the hole the fat man made and surveys the damage he caused by dropping the fat man through the floor, only to find that he missed his intended target.

After using Chrome for a little over a month, I began to miss AdBlock, but I really liked the browser's interface.  This stuff let me get pretty close in Firefox:

Compact Menu consolidates the menu bar into a single button drop-down menu.  No more stupid menu bar!

Download Statusbar lists downloads on a horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen.

Fission puts a progress bar in the address bar like Safari, and displays link locations in the address bar when moused over.  No more stupid status bar!

Speed Dial gives you big, clickable thumbnails of frequently visited sites.

TalkBack / Re: FEATURES: Whither Now, Samus Aran?
« on: July 11, 2008, 10:18:31 PM »
I'm skeptical of Greg's power/zero suit switching idea.  Not the concept itself, I suppose, so much as the justification.  You make it sound like Samus is clumsy or inagile while wearing her power suit, which isn't the case at all.  Asside from sinking in water, Samus has always been perfectly agile in her suit.  If she can't defeat a certain enemy yet, why not just run (as she does when encountering the SA-X in Fusion)?  Or if she has to be sneaky, why would she purposefully shed her suit and make herself more vulnerable to attack in the event that she gets caught?

Also, I think Zach's Halo-esque, squad-based FPS idea is the worst idea for a Metroid game ever.  His 3D stealth idea sounded interesting to me, though.  It would be a departure to be sure, but would still retain the solitude and exploration elements of the series.

Interviews with HVS seem to be popping up all over the place.  I hope they don't get killed by being overhyped. :/

new video and screen shots.  Pretty damn good looking if I do say so myself.  And the alien weapons look so much better.  Oh and an interview too.
New media looks better to me.  The lighting feels like it's been cleaned up significantly.
