The Nintendo versions might not have free-roaming to boot.

While Stan Lee will be shooting webs around New York City as an Amazon pre-order bonus for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of The Amazing Spider-Man, the Spidey co-creator will not be playable in the Wii, 3DS, or DS versions of the game, according to an Activision representative.

The DS version is being developed by Griptonite Games, who made the well-received Metroidvania Spider-Man games on DS (Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions).

The Wii and 3DS versions are both being developed by Beenox, and historically, Beenox's Spider-Man games on those systems have been downgraded versions of the 360 and PS3 versions. However, GameStop's description of the games says that the free-roaming available in the 360 and PS3 versions is not in the the Wii and 3DS games. We have yet to hear confirmation from Activision about this.

Stan Lee will playable in the 360 and PS3 versions in a bonus mission where he has to collect pages of a lost manuscript.

The Amazing Spider-Man is hitting Wii, 3DS, and DS on June 26.

PS3 version for me, then (if I buy at all).

I've been recently catching up with the Ultimate Spiderman game on PS2 (it was released on GC too, I think). It's very fun and has great free-roam controls that I find easier to use than the Spiderman 2 game. Cell-shaded graphics look fantastic and hold up better than Spiderman 2 as well, I think. I also think the combat controls are, again, easier and more intuitive than Spiderman 2. It basically surpasses Spiderman 2 in every way. It was developed by Treyarch, now of COD fame.
Just a shout-out in case folks never tried it.

I loved that game back in the day, and I actually repurchased the GameCube version about 6 months ago on a whim.  However, time and HD TVs have not been kind to that game, as the game just looks like a mess of blurry objects and barely-textured buildings now, and the combat and web-slinging feels so loose compared to the last couple of Spider-Man games.  Still, I remember that game having a surprisingly excellent Story mode, especially compared to the abysmal ones for the 2nd and 3rd movie-based games.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

I think Spider-Man 2 is a pile of crap now. It doesn't hold up at all. Anyone who says otherwise should go back and play that game. Time has not been kind.

I hope Amazing turns out well, but I will not be paying attention to anything but the 360/PS3 version and the DS version.

I had previously been under the impression that Other Ocean was doing the DS version again. That Griptonite is managing this version of the game is very, very good news. Spidey plays like a dream in Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions.
