TalkBack / Re: Ace Combat 7 Landing On Switch July 11
« on: January 21, 2024, 11:51:24 AM »
I have played the PC version and it's competitor, Project Wingman. Hard NO on AC7. Play the PS2 games or HAWX or anything else.

Skipping the many, many console-PC port issues, it's like Project Aces forgot how to make an AC game, or the competition has surpassed it. You can't help but feel they spent more money on sleep inducing CGI cutscenes than QA or development. It's not even good-looking for its time.

You never feel badass, it's boring. A rando probably wrote the story with $50 and two hours. Never had the urge to replay or grind for unlocks. The F22 felt so disappointing. The dialogue is pandering, greasing you up to win the entire war not because you are good, but because they can't be bothered. Weapons are terrible, universally weak, low ammo count, comically archaic restricted loadout options. The gun is exceptionally weak with a non-functional reticle that gets in the way, you are literally better off guessing. The AI is a joke, so much processing power available yet it's PS2 level in scale and quality.

I could go on. Just no.

Disney's output is wildly inconsistent. It's either excellent or dire. When it's terrible, you can't help but feel that some background drama or C-Suite MBA got its fingers into it. When it's good, whether they like Star Wars or whatever doesn't matter, you can see they actually like/pride their job on screen, not faking it on press panels (All of Star Trek).

I never watched the 'Extra' episodes of Mando, didn't get around to it and don't care enough. Bo-Katan wasn't the issue, it's a symptom. Mando had lost his agency and premise. A side character doing side quests, slice of life with guns. Something bigger caught him, and he couldn't get away. People constantly forcing the Dark Sabre on him is pretty funny meta symbolism, intentional or otherwise.

If they wanted him to engage in something bigger, it should have been his choice, his effort. The seasons long arc thread should have been playing keep away with Baby Yoda. Maybe once a season, the big bad shows up, big climax and they get away. Eventually he has to make a moral choice, does he keep his care free life, let a lot of completely unrelated to him people die/end their way of life (Don't always have to kill people) or finally end the threat(Doesn't have to be OUR big bad), with the friends he made along the way. No Mandalor, no dark troopers, just blowing up the big bad's base and erasing their existence from Imperial records. They could have made as many seasons as they wanted with that premise. But nah, everything has to be prestige TV, every episode with double-digit millions budget and plot lines.

So what is the timeline/watch order of Loki? I would like to see Kang resolved, but if Loki isn't involved, then what? This is a reason why I don't like Marvel/Disney, EVERYTHING has to be connected, important, minimum of one spin off and apocalyptic.

Checked when/what my last live TV show/series was. It was April and only 3 shows this year with nothing on the horizon this year. Ando, Mando, Avenue 5. Movie consumption isn't much better. Skipped Nolan, but fully intend to watch, as I was in the wrong country (dealing with 4 language streams is Not fun). How the mighty has fallen. Lots of great anime and games though.

Ando: A show we didn't need or asked for, but busted all expectations, justifying its existence and then some. Not because it's Star Wars, but because it's actually good. Would have been even stronger if we didn't know his ultimate fate, curse of the prequel.

Mando: Did not stick the landing. S3 falls apart hard as it throws away it's premise and lacking oh damn commentary like Herzog or Bill Burr. Felt unplanned, the reason we don't know, executive meddling, no expectation of S3, writers ran out of ideas, forgot what Mando is about. Doesn't matter, disappointing.

Avenue 5: Amazing show until the end. The entire cast is unique, simultaneously love to hate and loveable, which is quite the feat. What a shame, canned before it could reach a conclusion.

Question: What is the sequel to Loki? Quantum of something?

Watch out for the nerd rage!

It appears no one cared.

I can't believe they tried to paint Rose leaving from nerd outrage when she left for safety reasons, you know, almost breaking her back.

Supergirl this season, was OK, sort of participation award kind of way. It was really direction less and threw Lena under the bus, that wasn't Lena. Very little Kara. Ended in a wet fart. Still better than the dumpster fire of last season(4). What were they even thinking.

Legends was good. **** it, lets just have fun.

Wait, nickmitch, you don't know about the Superman Moustache?

6
They have redressed it so often it would be weird not to notice it's the same set. An entire season was a bottle show on that set.

The "Battle Arena" of two white boxes was on the space station thing that was somehow also the light house in the far future!? Ughh what a horrific season, literally better off if they didn't make it. They had staged play not TV money.

7
My problem with Mac is he isn't much of a leader. His lingering freak out over angles and demons last season really put me off. Like, how many years at SHIELD now? Steadfast wouldn't be the word I would use, obstinate with non-plans, events out running him, out played, getting undermined, usually by Daisy as the team does its thing. They know what to do, yet he tells them what to do like he doesn't trust them. Add on top he got the job because Daisy turned it down displaying of leadership that made her first choice. Coulson's return really put a nail into a coffin. Mac comes off like baggage with muscles stuck on an airport conveyor belt.

8
Agents of Shield is back if anyone still cares. Was enjoyable. Mac is really cheesing me off. Why did they make him Director again? Last season has been so long ago I had to rack my brain. Deak is cool, promoted from git. The suffering of Fritz Simmons continues unabated. Coulson is back to being cool. Premise for the season is intriguing.

9
Oh boy, here we go...Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.

I think I watched this. Had to double check. John and Zatanna are always top shelf although not her best incarnation. I am right with you on the new 52 or whatever. Just bad.

Harley Quinn has continued to slaughter every sacred cow with ever humorous gusto. Shots fired at Disney via Little Mermaid. I died with the invisible plane. Gordon is new level badass and bat **** insane. Poor Batgirl with no one listening to her. Not a single bad episode yet.

Legends is humming along nicely, ever more embracing the weird and fun with strong character moments.

Supergirl season was all over the place and the finale was a wet fart. Lex is a bastard. SG was constantly on the back foot and ineffective as a reporter. Lena got reduced to this dumb emotional mess, you're better than this girl. Brainy is just dumb, dumb. John was muscle taking SG's job. The new reporter is sort of cool but steals Kara's job. Kara is playing second fiddle to her own show.

I have no dog with the DC movies. Really enjoy the parody cuts. Don't care for Synder although I would take him or anyone imaginable over J 'Dumpster fire' J.

Was what was in Picard the Federation or just something with it's name? You make the claim of this core optimism but it has none. Despite being in a existential galactic war I would chose to live in DS9 that rather than Picard. In DS9 there is a Federation to fight for and I wouldn't have to put up with Fox News.

I miss Stargate. Lots of fun. Even SGU was starting to lighten up. That web/mini series was pretty good.

You... you haven't watched Picard or actually know anything about it do you.. There is no excuse to what they did in Picard.

Pale Moonlight is good as it is a extremely well written powerful character driven episode exploring that moral space rather than the whole Federation becoming this crapsack world where FOX news somehow exists. There is this massive lead up, it isn't there for shock value. The Federation is losing and I have to sell my soul to save it not just materially but it's soul as well. I consume this sin, drink freely from this poisoned chalice so the Federation ideals can continue.

Every time someone throws out DS9 to justify Kurtzman, everything post 2009, I only see someone who never understood why DS9 worked. Rich actually addresses part of this straight afterwards. To add to that, despite the grittiness, the hope of that future is still there. I think it's something of a mistake to call it gritty, more a sense of adventure, being on the edge of known space where your ideals are tested against others. The crew continues to carry those ideals in this dirty environment, that hope. They get called out on it by Quark among many other characters with their ideals, ideals that are valid from their perspective. Nog and Rom, polar opposites embraces and sacrifices for them in the face of the strongest protests.

It's not that the Federation is false. DS9 acknowledges that it's not something that is achieved, it is a continued work, requiring maintenance and protection. Much like the rights we enjoy today we have to be vigilant to those who seek to tear them down whether they be worker, race, health or sexual rights.

Picard doesn't even pay lip service to that. Every little thing it brings up is twisted, misconstrue, exploits, then abandoned to fake progressive credentials. It undermines itself at every turn and it is sickening to think Picard somehow represents the Trek ideals or progressiveness when it doesn't. The same goes for STD and no doubt Pike.

That is not even touching on to how god awfully written it is even if you were to excuse the whole "Trek" thing. Look at this, how is this level of writing acceptable:

If that is not written by a hack I don't know what is. Something as basic as blowing something up.

416
00:19:21,779 --> 00:19:24,649

417
00:19:25,150 --> 00:19:32,240

421
00:19:37,700 --> 00:19:41,360
moment in Star Trek I don't I've told

422
00:19:39,589 --> 00:19:43,309
we've done like five of these Star Trek

423

reviews stop me if I've talked about

this before but this the Abraham Lincoln

425

space episode as corny as that is but

426
00:19:49,160 --> 00:19:53,660
you have Abraham Lincoln other bridge

427
00:19:50,720 --> 00:19:58,400
the enterprise and he uses an outdated

00:19:53,660 --> 00:20:01,580
offensive term a charming negress to her

00:19:58,400 --> 00:20:03,530

faked space Lincoln being a kind man

431
00:20:03,529 --> 00:20:10,849

435
00:20:16,970 --> 00:20:21,380

00:20:39,230 --> 00:20:44,539
offense was given we've each learned to

444
00:20:41,569 --> 00:20:46,819
be delighted with what we are and it's

445
00:20:44,539 --> 00:20:48,950
it's such a thing of the past that it's

446
00:20:46,819 --> 00:20:51,079
forgotten it's completely it's

447
00:20:48,950 --> 00:20:53,090

451
00:20:57,740 --> 00:21:02,529

You are comparing Trailers to Posters. That is out of scope.

Also of course they are going to show the action bit in a trailer. If there is comedic violence in a comedy they are going to show that. Trailers can run an arbitrary amount of time so out of sheer probability you are going to have some violence. Even Orville Trailer plays to this.

You wouldn't blink an eye to the action shown to old Trek you knew it wasn't hapless pewpew BOOM kill everything. Team pewpew is nothing but pewpew and has yet to prove themselves otherwise. How many episodes, body count, how many different series does it take to show Trek is nothing but a marketing label to them? Nobody would read anything into the gun if not for the expectations they themselves built up.

Hence Face Eating Leopard Party.

Ran your little poster experiment. Well what do you know! The posters reflect what is in the movie! It's like they are related. Lets make it fun.

Contain violence?

TMP: No
Khan: Yes
Spock: Yes
Voyage home: No
Final: No (People on horse violent?)
Undiscovered: Yes

The marketing media is inextricably interlinked as they are there to see the contents. So yeah, meta Checkov's gun.

Lets continue.

Generations: No
First Contact: No (Resistance is Futile and ominous count?)
Insurrection: No (Evil face?)
Nemesis: Yes (Knife)

2009: 50/50 First poster isn't, Violent poster is on first row on google search
Darkness: Yes
Beyond: Yes

Then add team pew pew body of work and the conclusion is foregone. It's like you are telling me Michael Bay isn't going to do explosions when there clearly is an explosion on the poster. Come. on.

Wrong war Spak Spang.

The Eugenics War is pre-warp Earth. It's Khan's origin story, a story already told. No aliens, no Federation. The Federation wasn't really a thing till the end of Enterprise. The only reason to touch it is if you have a death pewpew boner which the current "Creators" have a very hard one for. iirc that is not WW3 that leads to First Contact.

It's a bad idea to go there not because of the subject matter, it's another prequel based off a handful of lines. They have a very high difficulty and the current team sure as hell can't make it work. The Clairece Sterling pilot is said to be super bad and you know all the unending dire af "Trek".

I do not know where they got the money from for Pike. Viacom is facing serious debt issues which would have been manageable for not the Chinese nasty. CBS All Access is facing a heavy duty retooling/re-branding very soon possibly dumping Pike into Limbo. Maybe this is another Star Wars situation with someone going on a fishing expedition. No way they are getting money from Viacom. Who is the sucker this time?

Oh for those thinking this is some sort of return to Trek, Pike is holding a gun. We come in peace shoot to kill.

There doesn't seem to be any clamping as to how random it is. When I played it on PC it would be more than happy to throw impossible levels of damage. You can have perfect play, the best dice rolls, the best cards but if the RNG wants you dead there is nothing you can do.

It's the nature of these dice games if it doesn't contain enough player influenced elements or to hedge bets. You're either threading a needle or it's cake.

Day to day imperial units annoy me as they are relics that just won't go away. If you have a group that has a traditional measurement you want to keep to yourself ok, but the outside is metric. I am especially annoyed when watching something online and they would use imperial units without a metric conversion anywhere. It is especially bad with Fahrenheit as that is just nonsense shameful unit of measurement.

There are very useful specific exceptions for marine and aviation though.

That said selling by diagonal is in itself dumb and smart. The average peep would be durrr, 50 inch/cm TV please. 50 inches/cm is near meaningless without the aspect ratio. It's not technically useful but great for marketing.
