Episode 98: Cross-Platform Play
« on: August 16, 2013, 05:50:33 PM »

Listener Mail, Animal Crossing after 100 hours, and an argument for the Vita on this week's show.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/35209

Welcome to this special episode of Connectivity. We are proud to announce that, starting this week, we are introducing cross-platform capabilities to our podcasts. What does this mean for you? Read on to learn more!

We open this week's show with Scott, Danny, and Patrick answering some listener mail. The trio discuss the future of Mario RPG's, why Miiverse is relatively troll-free, playing 3DS games on Wii U, and what series needs to take a break for a while. While you enjoy this segment, you'll notice a new feature. Thanks to our new cross-platform infrastructure, you'll find that you can download this podcast to any of your devices. That's right! PC, Mac, iPhone, Android device; feel free to download this episode on virtually anything. Revolutionary!

Next up, Alex and Justin discuss life in Animal Crossing after 100 hours. The duo discuss their immaculate towns, goals in the late-game, and where New Leaf fits amongst the others in the series. Thanks once again to our new cross-platform cloud system, you can also rest easy knowing that you are free to start this segment on one device and finish it on another (some fast forwarding may be required). How convenient!

Closing out the show, Neal, J.P. and Patrick discuss the merits of the Vita and whether or not there is place for it in the homes and backpacks of fervent 3DS owners. The guys go in-depth with the Vita's hardware and software, so if you've been curious about it, this is the segment for you. Unfortunately, we haven't worked out all the kinks with our cross-platform system, so this segment inexplicably might not run on newer devices, despite being available on their progenitors for years. Hey, we aren't perfect here!

Be sure to click here to send us your listener mail. We love hearing from you guys, so keep it coming! 98 episodes in the can, how wild. Wonder what we'll do for 100...

The Vita is awesome. I was lucky enough to get it through some trading at GameStop and a good deal, and it was very much worth it. I also have a 3DS for the record.
I'm a staff writer here at good ol' Nintendo World Report, but I also have a Nintendo website at www.nintendogamerthoughts.com

The first thing that came to me when I heard the question: What item from a video game would I want in real life?

It's Ad man. (Think superhero.) handle since like 2000.

I bought a Vita for a hundred bucks and bought Persona 4, even though I have the PS2 version. I don't regret it, but I haven't seen anything else that interesting. I only really play Nintendo pushed games though.

If you're open to just trying some random games and see what sticks, get a PS+ account. I know it's $50/year, but I think you can snag a 3-month membership for like $18. You get a mess of free games (only when you have the subscription active), including some of the more notable Vita releases (Gravity Rush, and I think Uncharted Golden Abyss is still up there). Also, you get a discount on the oncoming onslaught of Vita releases.
Divekick (out today) is like Photo Dojo but without the photo aspect and with deeper gameplay
Spelunky (out next week) is a side-scrolling roguelike game that is very hard and challenging, but also rewarding if you can get into it.
Dragon Fantasy Book 2 (out next month) is an RPG that is basically Chrono Trigger with airships

And that's only the stuff coming out in the next month.
If you're a Mario Golf fan, check out Hot Shots Golf.
I still haven't played Hotline Miami, but I've heard nothing but rave reviews.
Stealth Inc. is a hard-as-nails side-scrolling stealth game from the dudes who made Fluidity.
Guacamelee is an awesome Metroidvania-style game.
Mutant Blobs Attack is sort of like 2D Katamari (made by the same dudes as Guacamelee)

Let me know if you have any specific genres you like and I can recommend more specifically. I play way more 3DS than I do Vita, but I really love both systems. They're fantastic and I implore 3DS owners that find themselves during prolonged downtime with games to play to look into a Vita.

Note: Most of these games can be played on PC or other systems, but I really dig the portability of the Vita.
