Good Bye Microsoft
« on: August 09, 2009, 01:20:42 AM »
So today I went to flip my 360 on to play COD4. Guess what! It wouldn't turn on! Not the red rings it wouldn't even power up! Unplugged everything, tried different cable everything. It has died. My 7th 360 to die except the other 6 where RRoD's, this wasn't. So Microsoft won't repair it for free! They would charge me $170 plus shipping! No thank you! Good bye Microsoft, my days gaming with you have ended. Hello Sony, you now are the maker of my console of choice! Hello to a bright and happy future in supporting Sony, Nintendo, and the PC for all my new gaming purchases! The Microsoft Xbox division is dead to me.

I have had the same one for 2 years. Last time it RRoD'ed was right before Mass Effect. Before that it was a RRoD here and RRoD there, here a RR there a RR, everywhere a RRoD. Haha, I got all my 6 RRoD's in that! haha

I am continually surprised how much crap people put up with when it comes to the Xbox. This is the world where people fly into fits of rage over 10 cents, yet endless number of people who are on their nth Xbox just keep sucking it down.

What the hell is going on here?!?!

On another note COD4 is pretty awesome, but it would suck to play that on a control pad.

My brother's Xbox just RROD'd the other week. It lasted a little over 2.5 years. Of course, my Gamecube still works and that's what almost 8 years old....

Microsoft is just lucky they launched first and Sony charged a soul for PS3 when it came out, otherwise they'd be SOL with this crap.

Oh, Nintendo, you knew what was right for us all along. Are people who don't use friend codes going to start being killed off next?

That said, the only time I've had anything Nintendo break was my NES after like 15 years. The only non-Nintendo console I've had was a PS1, and one day that decided not to turn on, several years before the NES did, mind you. The PS1 breaking was what me go with a GameCube over a PS2, that and Wind Waker. I can't imagine going through 7 consoles, the one PS1 made me abandon Sony.

You do know that each 360 revision has a different power connector right? It's because of different voltages. But it seems like something fried internally. If you want another 360 you are better off buying an Arcade system.

I dunno, there's less and less point to owning a 360 these days.  Outside of Halo, Gears, and Mass Effect (and maybe Fable), there isn't much else out there for it that you can't get elsewhere.  If I didn't have so much money tied up in 360 Rock Band peripherals I'd dump my 360 altogether.

People who can't find worthwhile games on the PS3 aren't looking very hard, if they're looking at all.  And yeah, I'm looking forward to Uncharted 2 as well and I just finished (the awesome) Valkyria Chronicles.

Sorry to hear about your 360, but the console's now-legendary shoddy workmanship is one of the main reasons I never picked one up.  Well, that and I don't give a damn about FPS titles.  Like everyone else here, I'm amazed you were willing to sit through 6 RROD 360s before finally saying enough was enough with your 7th breaking down.

You can get Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Fable on the PC. However, you cannot yet get Halo 3, Gears of War 2, or Fable 2 outside of the Xbox 360. Mass Effect and Fable are really the only ones to care about anyway.

I can't think of any console-exclusive reasons to own a 360. Halo 3 was fun for about a week but I eventually got bored with the online multiplayer. Haven't played GoW2 but the sheer number of online glitches alone would steer me away from it and Fable II...well, don't get me started about Fable II.

Since the 360 is my only console right now, I don't really have a choice. None of those games that you listed really interest me, so I'm pretty much playing LotR:C, Force & Sonic Unleashed, and Rock Band right now. Anyway, I'm focusing on catching up on handheld games like Pokemans:Platinum and Final Fantasy VI Advance right now.

When's the last time you had it replaced? If it was less then a year ago, then you're under warranty, IIRC. I'm pretty sure every refurbished system comes with a 1 year warranty, even if it's only for the 3 red lights...tell them that you're getting the 3 red lights.

Alright, then add on top of those Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Blaz Blue: Calamity Trigger, Disgaea 3, and Cross Edge.  Granted, most of those are available on both platforms and 2 of them could be PS1 games but they are on Next-Gen platforms.  There's plenty of graphical variety on all platforms, even on the Wii (though not nearly as much as I'd like with that console).

Incidentally, I find your loathing of "post apocalyptic, drab, brown or OMGZ realistic" to be rather ironic considering if I remember correctly you're a Fallout 3 fan.  ;)

And I'll just end that off-topic banter right there before it gets out of hand.

It seems like any time I have even an iota of interest in getting a 360, I come across a story/thread like this that keeps me in check. I'm not a nintendo fanboy, not even close, but it just happens to be I've never been severely dissapointed with their products.

When i was a kid i used to think my game gear was SO much cooler than a gameboy, until i realized how quickly the batteries died. Ugh. It got to the point my mom just refused to buy more batteries for me to waste, and was forced to playing with the ac adaptor plugged in. Whats the point in a portable if you have to play teathered to a wall 3ft away? When i finally got a gameboy (color.. i held out a long time) I was happy with it.

My Saturn sure was a nice gift from my stepfather, a huge step-up from my SNES graphically... too bad I hated all the games for it that he bought the system with. I prefered my SSFII:Turbo over Virtua Fighter 2, and both MegaMan 8 and X4 SUCKED compared to the MM games I had on my S/NES.
Oh and then there were those memory cards that kept me from saving any of my damn games, ugh.

Sometimes it feels like its just dumb luck, though, that i've stuck with Nintendo all these years.

I like the PS3 way more than the 360. I hate how you have to pay for online. I hate how there is no WIRELESS card unless you want to buy one for a bill. And I hate how you can't go online into ranked matches without having an account even though your playing with your friend on his account. Gay.

I like the PS3 because of blu-ray. I normally wouldn't care, but because of the access I have to free blu-rays, it really does come in handy and I really enjoy the picture. I love how it has free internet gaming. I hate how big the damn thing is and I hate how light and shitty the controllers are.

I love my wii!

With that said, I love my Wii as well! (haha!) I can't see myself getting a playstation though, just because i've always had bad luck with Sony products. With that and how faulty the 360's are, i'm SO relieved I'm actually enjoying my Wii and aren't an "elitist hardcore gamer" that complains of the lack of good.

The sad state is Sony's PS3 isn't 100% realiable neither.  The laser goes (main problem) and there's alot of dead systems due to failed system update--I'm on my third freaking PS3 unit and it costed around $250 for repairs so far.  Sony charges $150+ for any repair nowadays and they don't sell the components to consumers directly so buying lasers cost $60ish depending on model.

Still on my orginal Xbox360 though, go figure.  The one console I bought the extended warranty for ($60 for 6 years--you get 3 years orginally so it extended it additional three).

Well I'm surprised MS tried charging $170?  It's usually a flat $80 for repairs last I knew.  For $170 you can buy a New Arcade 360 for just $30 more.  Really doesn't make much sense.

GI just had a chart made up called "epic fail" and the Xbox 360 rated a whooping 40 percent.  Sony actually had nearly 10% and the WII had the lowest at 6%.

But yeah if you do buy a PS3 wait for the price drop and still buy the extended warranty for the extra three years.  One laser failure costs $150+ taxes for Sony to fix so a $30 warranty is fairly cheap.

Thinking about the PS3 slim myself.  I'm going take my ole PS3 and make an arcade box out of it since I already modded it and I have some madcats fighting sticks.  All I need is a cheap LCD (42 inch screen).

No, it is a really stupid sentiment and is PR straight from the mouths of Nintendo's competitors.  The worst part is it isn't even true, Nintendo's made like 22 games for the Wii that fit the standard definition of games, either continuations of pre-existing, Pre-2004 "Casual Crisis" series or games with characters gamers already know about, with only about 6 or so games aimed at the non-gamers.  On the DS, the original "Zomg casual games ruining everything" console, it's like 50 core games to 12.  It's not even CLOSE to this idea that Nintendo has canceled all their core games in favor of non-gamers.

In fact this is so bad I suggest it become a bannable offense.  The argument just doesn't stand up to rudimentary facts and any continuation of it is either a troll attempt or an inability to process new facts, both of which are really undesirable for a forum.

For the rest of this year for my PS3 I am interested in Modern Warfare 2, The Beatles: Rock Band(with great looking graphics), Uncharted 2, and Grand Turismo 5, Assassin's Creed II, Batman: AA.

I personally think that all of this hardcore, casual, and whatever labeling crap is garbage. To me there will be mainstream games which are popular and appeal to a broad audience such as Mario, Sonic, Brain Age, Halo, Mario Kart, Uncharted, Wii Fit, Madden, Guitar Hero, Rock Band and your niche/obscure games which appeal to a specific fanbase or audience such as Shin Megami Tensei, Rune Factory, Mad World, Disgaea, Mystery Dungeon games.

I remember someone made a time line about this labeling nonsense:

Quote from: Neogaf
1970s - 1994:
- The terms "Non-Game/Casual/Core" do not exist
- Nintendo is awesome (not for Sega-fans)

1994 - 2003:
- The terms "Non-Game/Casual/Core" do not exist
- Nintendo is kiddy

2004:
- The terms "Non-Game/Casual/Core" do not exist
- Nintendo is still kiddy
- "PSP is going to outsell the NDS by 5 trillion units"
- "Nintendo is going 3rd Party"

2005:
- Sony-fans have to eat a lot of crows
- NDS becomes the super-seller
- Brain Age, Nintendogs & Co. are successful
- Iwata mentions the term "Non-Game" to describe Animal Crossing, which is also a great success
- So, let's bad-mouth this all!
-> NDS is only successful because of Non-Games
-> The only games that're doing well on the NDS are Non-Games
-> Everyone is going to  create only Non-Games now
-> Nintendo is going to create only Non-Games now
-> Non-Games are destroying the industry
-> Nintendo is destroying the industry

2006:
- "****, NDS is great, everything sells well, industry gets bigger and bigger"
- Wii gets released
-> Wii is only successful because of Non-Games
-> The only games that're doing well on the Wii are Non-Games
-> Everyone is going to create Non-Games now
-> Nintendo is going to create only Non-Games now
-> Non-Games are destroying the industry
-> Nintendo is destroying the industry

Irony fact: "Gamers always wanted a big industry in which everyone plays, now they're crying around"

2007:
- The term "Non-Game" gets replaced by the term "Casual-Game"
- Everyone uses the term "Core-Gamer" to describe themselves (or in 2006 already)
- Peak year of discussions/posting bullshit

2008:

2009:
- Finally, people are not talking that much about this topic and I hope this ends soon...

Because Nintendo is not hardcore centric anymore...

This is where things took off, unintentional forum arson, maybe.  His PS3 inclination wasn't getting attacked, if you followed.  Saying "I want this one game on Wii and I want these 6-7 games on PS3" is pretty plain and wouldn't have gotten anyone's reaction, that's a matter of quantities on his wishlist for the year.  HOWEVER, he kicked things off with a loaded "PR bullsquash" statement, and in NWR fashion, NWR Staff jumped on it.  fire in the hole!  hit the deck!

A part of the statement was clear PR garbage.  It could've been left out without changing the point ("I only plan on getting Mario for the remainder of the year").  Why include the PR garbage to begin with?

Am I seriously not allowed to have an opinion? Because for the past year and a half there has been not that much on the Wii to entertain me. And a total of none from Nintendo. Last game that got me really excited and I played for more than a few weeks that was from Nintendo was Brawl. Last March....

Yes the upcoming year looks awesome, but that's not right now. For me personally there has been little support from Nintendo for games that I want. Its the truth and that doesn't look to be changing until next year.

The industry been saying the same for awhile now the WII software is god awful at the best of times.  There's not alot of AAA titles on the platform even though it has thousand+ software titles.  It's a complete opposite of last generation for Big N.

At least the WII's linup is still better than the PSP--sony really hasn't done much in the last two years neither for that platform.

All depends what you consider AAA which is subjective at best. The Wii has plenty of solid  games on it, maybe not wow, 10 out of 10 games in plenty but solid games and several great games both casual and more core.

Well if you just go by averages and compare the first 2 1/2 years of releases on the GC vrs the WII and you'll going find more games were rated in the 85%+ on the GC during that time period.

Alot of that has to due with 3rd party games being excluded from the WII--Batman AA, Bioshock, Fallout, ect--I can go all day if I wanted to.  A few developers have taken the time to make multiplatform games appear on the WII, why I supported Activision on finally porting Modern Warfare and hopefully other developers take the time to bring their titles as well.

And finally, the developers seem to focus on the casual gamers so you'll getting like 10 "mini-game clone" to 1 that isn't.  There's so much "shovelware" on the WII I think the customers are starting to lose interest in gaming in general which isn't good for the industry.

The PS3 might not have tons of software coming out but if you're a fan of fighting, action, shooting, and RPGs than the WII really doesn't have much to counter in those areas.

Saddly Big N is going win the console war this generation but I don't think it's going touch the PS2 of even the SNES numbers.  Just look at the monthly sales and the massive decrease from just one year ago and you'll see what I mean.

"A few developers have taken the time to make multiplatform games appear on the WII"

But JUST LIKE what occurred on GameCube, those same multiplatform publishers (are the devs really deciding what's multiplatform or not?) have not been putting in those good-faith best efforts in versions that appear on Nintendo consoles.  Countless on-time "multiplatform" games that landed on GameCube were either disastrous port jobs or "good enough" versions with key features axed.  I could go all day down memory lane to recount the duds and bad apples, which is why I'm personally hesitant to support a company that appears to "finally support" the casual machine.  They've got to put their best foot forward AND make sure the shoes look good too.  Using Modern Warfare as an example, it's got to be a top-quality job meeting their [selective...] high standards AND they have to show they care enough about it by proving it already makes the grade instead of hiding it like they're ashamed of it.  If they made a big deal about the original version the first time around, why aren't we seeing any of that enthusiasm now?

Typically, I'd think that if a company thinks they've got a great product and wants us to believe they've got a great product, they'd convey it by demonstrating the product as much as possible (that's what they DO, right?).  Instead we see 3rd party games quietly hit Wii, no big deal, "zero" publicity (gotta go beyond the internet).  Not a big deal?  Fine, I'm sure the ignorant public agrees.

How about these game makers try delivering products that at least compete with the GameCube remakes that've shown up on Wii, let's start there?

Well it goes with sales, if there's enough sales then the ports usually recieve a better treatment--GH series or even Rock band for example.

I think Modern Warfare might get a better treatment than WoW since the sales were alot better last time around.  CoD 3 for the WII didn't sell but WoW did so hopefully Activision sees that.  I just hope they don't rush the game just to make the winter release.  Have to wait and see.

If your going to say statements like this, at least do some research.  At this point in the Wii's lifespan it's already several million units higher then the PS2 was at this point in it's lifespan.  Not to mention even though the Wii's sales the last several months are lower then last years, these low numbers are around the same numbers the PS2 was doing at this point in it's lifespan.

Plus I'd like to point out that at this point in the PS2's life, it was $180 in North America.  The PS2 launched at a $300 price tag and by it's third year was down to $180.  The Wii on the other hand launch at $250 and by it's third year is STILL $250.

People have to remember this little fact since Sony had to drop the PS2's price several times in it's life to keep it's high sales going.  Nintendo has yet to drop the price of the system once and yet it's still sold more at this point in it's life then the PS2 did and even at it's worst, it's still putting up the same numbers the PS2 did on average, even though the Wii is more expensive then the PS2 was at this point in it's life.

Plus I have to ask, why did you say the Wii wont touch the SNES sales in your post?  The SNES only sold 49 million units during it's entire life.  The Wii surpassed the 50 million mark months ago.  If your going to compare the Wii to another Nintendo home console at least pick the NES which sold over 60 million units.  Of course at the Wii's current pace, it'll easily surpass that mark sometime in the next year so you wont have long to use that either.

I'm talking about the software side of things--what good is overall sales when the software side is lacking?

There's 100's of Great PS2 games but there's only a handful of great WII games--you can't deny this since everyone is the industry states the same.

Right now even though the WII is winning the hardware side of things, in terms of software--the 360 is still considered king.

You can google either gamerankings or metacritic since both sites take the average reviews.

People who treat Metacritic ratings as objective and absolute indicators of quality are hopeless and not worth arguing with.

I never stated that--but it's still an average of reviews and no you're not going agree with every score but it's usually pretty fair though.  Or if you didn't go by just avg but by the majority of votes you can actual filter it that way too.

Majority of votes is my method--there's some reviewers who simply rated the game extremly high or really low for one reason or other so just taking the bulk works best IMO.

For example if 4 of of 5 people rate a game at 9'0 and one can rated it a 1.0 the average is 7.4 a C rated game--that wouldn't be fair IMO so by taking the bulk you simply the majority which is 9 --making it an A rated game.

Nintendo, say what you want about the horsepower, seems to use the best quality materials in their hardware.

What is it with this site and members having their Wii die. For me it's the 360 and PS3 that has died on me.

We actually use our Wii's a lot and the general public doesn't?

I had 7 360's and 1 Wii die. My PS3 hasn't died but I haven't had it quite as long. Got it about a year after it came out.

Sorry, couldn't dig up Xbox #'s, but Wii is hanging with PS2 just fine when it comes to software sales. Atleast according to this chart.

Maybe not all the games are to your liking, but somebody is buying all this software.
