DKC Trilogy Gone from Virtual Console
« on: November 20, 2012, 09:46:21 AM »

The Donkey Kong Country games are no longer available to purchase.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32554

As of right now in the United States, the trilogy of Donkey Kong Country games for the Super Nintendo have been removed from the Wii (and thus, the Wii U) Virtual Console download service.

The European Virtual Console will continue to sell the games until November 25, so those who don't want to miss out will have to act quickly. Those who previously purchased the titles will still be able to access them.

Donkey Kong Country, Diddy's Kong Quest, and Dixie's Double Trouble had been available for almost the entire life of the Wii console, and there is currently no known reason why the games are on the chopping block. Some have speculated Wii U compatibility problems or licensing issues with developer Rare as the cause, whereas more optimistic outlooks have taken it to hint at a possible HD collection in the future.

Efforts to contact Rare for comment have thus far been fruitless.

That sucks! Those were some of the best games the SNES had on it. I'm glad I downloaded them when I did however, but it still sucks they're no longer available to buy.

I'm confused... If you already have them, don't they still transfer over to the Wii U? If so, how could it possibly be a Wii U compatibility issue?

Maybe they're being used as a first test subject of selling us our virtual console games to us again with the added feature of being able to play on your gamepad.

It's constant bull like this that's starting to make me hate video games.
If you shall force your righteous perspective upon others, which in turn requires an effort to understand, would you do the same? Or presumptuously reject theirs to begin with...?

..Which requires no effort on your part.

What else could you say in a complicated world..

I read on another article that someone transferred it without any trouble so it can't be because of Wii U compatibility. The only thing I can think of is licensing issues. Beyond that I don't know what else it could be, (doesn't mean it IS, again it's just that's all I can think of).

Maybe they made a deal with Rare that has now expired.  If the deal was for the like of the Wii the deal would have expired once the Wii U came out to replace it.  Or it could be that the deal was SOLELY for the Wii and once the Wii U came it the deal became void since the VC versions of those games could now be played on another system.

I think it would be worth it for Nintendo to try to buy Rare back solely for the IP that became successful on Nintendo systems in the first place.  At the time it was like characters like Banjo and Joanna Dark were Nintendo characters.  Even if Rare as a developer is now worthless you figure having those characters back would be worth it.

I severely doubt it has anything to do with Rare. Nintendo owns all rights to the game, Rare nearly was work for hire.

I think you have this exactly right.

I actually hope this is the case and if so, I say this:

If this has anything to do with Rare then it adds even more credence to my idea of Nintendo buying Rare back from Microsoft, or atleast Rare's IPs so that they can appear on the Virtual Console and Microsoft can keep the shell of the compnay that meks its Kinect Sports titles. This way Nintendo does not have to worry about licensing issues with Rare's stuff ever again and Microsoft gets to keep making Kinect sports games. It is a win-win for everyone.
