The standard playback-only version shouldn't have Gator, I think. Only the FREE Pro versions should, which you should only consider getting if you plan on making DivX video files.

Hey, thanks for the explanation.

But getting a new one, thats cool. I wonder if maybe they should put in on the DS to see if they can streamline its controls any...

Two Screens + Touch Screen + SRPG = teh pwnage!

Hmm, I had never thought of that.  That sounds cool.  You could see the battles and dialogue on one screen, and the map on the other.  You could also manipulate the characters with the stylus.

Argh, you people and your initialisms.  It took me a bit to figure out what game that was (Need for Speed: Underground)

By the way, this is some really anal Metroid fanboy stuff, but why the hell can't they get the terminology right with this stuff? It should be called the Space Jump, unless it causes damages to enemies, which one of the directors of the game said they weren't sure if they were going to have it do that or not. Also the thing in Prime that was called the Space Jump should have been called the High Jump Boots. Argh!

Personally, I very much prefer Prime's "Space Jump" to Super Metroid's.  To me, the Space Jump really wasn't very fitting to Metroid.  In SM, it a) wasn't particularly fun to use - the constant tapping of the jump button was irritating and b) completely destroyed any challenge involving gravity, making the more interesting wall-jump useless.  Combined with the Screw Attack, it just made the game seem more gimmicky and less ominous.  This was particularly annoying as Super Metroid is one of my favorite games of all time.  The Prime version, though, was far more interesting (although perhaps not actually the same Space Jump as you say).  It was both necessary for progression and allowed for extremely precise jumps.

If I am long-winded on the topic it's because I recall thinking about this when playing Prime.

Anyway, off-topic:  I tried to download the DivX codec a few weeks ago, but it wouldn't let me install it without installing Gator, which wasn't particularly enticing for me.  Is there any way around this?  I'd love to see that video.

« on: June 04, 2004, 08:15:27 PM »
Hmm.  I can't imagine how Nintendo could really suffer all that much from piracy.  GameCube is pretty much piracy-proof, as far as I know; there hasn't yet been an emulator developed for it.  There are GBA emulators, but they completely destroy the point of the GBA - portability.  Who wants to sit in front of a computer to play a GBA game?  The only way I can see for piracy to be worthwhile is to get portability somehow - through copies of cartridges somehow, or some alternate portable system with a GBA emulator.

What is "counterifing"?  I assume it's just a misspelling of "counterfeiting"..

Whoa.  That's crazy.  An hour long interview with a corporate giant about a series of games you know nothing about?  That's intimidating as hell.

Ignore G4.  Aside from one very good show (Icons) it's pure crap.  Tommy and Victor rate games much like the random people on GameFAQ's, handing out both ten's and two's with no discretion whatsoever, and having little justification of the score.

36
The above statement makes no sense whatsoever.

If you live in certain states (couldn't tell you where, off-hand) you can find a CD/Game Exchange, which sells some extremely cheap used games.  I got a copy of Super Metroid for $5.  Super Mario All-Stars was $2.50, Donkey Kong Country 2 was (I think) $8,  and Final Fantasy 3 (VI) was $15.  Not to mention the many other games from other systems I've got there for similarly astounding prices.

Well, 2D and 3D puzzles are just different.  I wouldn't say one is superior to the other.  While it's true that some kinds of puzzles are better in 2D (block puzzles come to mind) others can only be done in 3D (Think of the Water Temple in OoT, or its counterpart in Majora's Mask).  Personally, I prefer the 3D, OoT-style puzzles.

How about a system that lets you individually target body parts, a la Eternal Darkness?  Naturally you wouldn't cleave their head off or anything, but it would put some great strategy into the combat system -- you could attack their weapon arm to disarm them, attack their head to stun them, etc.  It would work great with Zelda's targeting system.

It's the power of suggestion.  If you listen to it before seeing the 'lyrics' you'll hear hardly anything at all.  When you hear it with the lyrics, you think you hear what you see.

And besides, think of this:  Do you have any idea how difficult it would be to create a backward message in an actual sentence?  He would have to have linguistics experts write his lyrics for him.  And, I might add, the "Satanic" message makes just as little sense as the original.

Ehhh.. I just watched IGN's localized movie.  I don't know how good the Japanese voices were, but the English ones are terrible! They just sound shallow, and fall completely flat.  If I get this game, I probably play it with the voices off.  Still, the cel-shaded anime graphics look excellent!

I definitely agree about Command and Conquer: Generals.  While the demo was awesome (never played the full version) I much preferred the extremely satirical, B-movie/Dr. Strangelove- style of Red Alert 2.

I also find Battlefield: Vietnam distasteful - or, for that matter, Battlefield 1942.  Playing as a Nazi trying to kill American soldiers doesn't appeal to me, although it is a fun game.

"Several surveys and tests have revealed that people become more insensitive to violence, and themselves violent, when indulging in playing games with violent content! "

Or is it that already-violent people like to play violent games?

Nintendo Gaming / Fire Emblem!

I noticed there was no GameCube Fire Emblem discussion (aside from a short-lived TalkBack one) so I started one.

Is everyone else as excited about this game as I am?  I haven't yet played the GBA version (although I definitely want to), but I've been wanting to play Fire Emblem for years.  It's a completely different side of Nintendo.  Check out the screenshots/artwork at IGN or wherever else:  It's amazing.  I made the city artwork by new background.

"I would loooove a game that has nothing to do with zombies or stupid things that wonder around like zombies. What about something like fatal frame? I'd love to see something like that done more often. Something more in the realm of "I KNOW it's there, because I can hear it, and it's getting louder, but I can't SEE it! WTF IS that?!" "

I completely agree with you.  The mindless zombies really ruined Eternal Darkness for me.  I'd be wondering around in an atmospheric mansion or church, looking at the great amount of detail and generally being very creeped out... and then I'd see a zombie.  I'd run up to it, slash it head off.  Suddenly, I realize it's just a game, and my livelihood only depends on my thumb's proximity to the 'hack' button.

On the other hand, some of the insanity effects were very creepy.  Blood dripping from the walls, strange voices... as long as it's subtle, it works.  When I come into a room and my limbs start falling off, however, I simply sigh and wait for the effect to end.

Rant over.

"A lawyer  What that little bit means is that DMC is Capcom's, not Konami's. Just filling you in. "

Eep, yeah, sorry.  Suddenly completely forgot that for some reason.

Come to think of it, Capcom might be nice too, but we're receiving plenty of support for them at the moment.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Dead Phoenix - Kid Icarus conversion

WHY must Capcom change an intriguing, possibly unique new title into yet another known Nintendo franchise?  Can't anyone release any games without roman numerals or colons?  I would much prefer Dead Pheonix stay as it was originally seen.  I don't want another SFA.

And I don't think Dead Pheonix is a rail shooter.  I was under the impression it was very open-ended.  Maybe just my imagination.  If it *is* a rail shooter, my hopes for the game just flew out the proverbial window.

I'm assuming you mean second party, which is what Silicon Knights was.  I would choose Konami.  Castlevania, Metal Gear, Devil May Cry... what else do you need?

"Both Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 will be playable on PC, yet there will be some new PC title shown on the show floor that will blow both of those games out of the water"

Whoa.  Very interesting.  Does Billy know something we don't?  He also listed the game of the show note under PC (though that might just be because it is last).

""What the heck? There's much, MUCH more that could be added to the game, and I think they've only scratched the surface to its potential"

Any examples? I can think of superficial stuff to add but nothing that's worth making another Cube game for. I guess they could add some new stuff but to me the game was designed for online play so it's a huge waste to not go in that direction. Plus with very few exceptions I hate the idea of releasing more than one game in a series on the same console without a major new feature. I guess it's more of just my opinion but if I was making the call there would be no new Animal Crossing games made without online support. "

I agree with Bill.  There is a *ton* of stuff that could be done with an offline Animal Crossing 2.  Some ideas:

-Politics!  Run for mayor, or vote for your favorite animal.
-Open up your own shop, selling things to other people/animals, and compete with Nook.
  -More detailed fishing
  -Dynamic tides
-Better, more interesting villagers (emphasis on personality depth, not numbers)
-Harvest Moon elements:  Raise a farm (obviously simplistic compared to HM)
-Families  (2 or more players can move in together, and some NPC's come with pre-set families)
-More specific inter-player relationships:  Villagers will find out how players are related.  Thus, if a player is another player's mom, she'll get a present on Mother's Day, animals will mention this in conversation, etc.
-Fully customizable characters - rather than merely changing an outfit, players will be able to choose their face, hair, skin color, individual bits of clothing, etc.
-More games!  More NES games, GameBoy games, possibly a few SNES games, etc.

All this is just off the top of my head.  Believe me,  there is plenty that can be done with AC2.  While the basic gameplay and controls will be the same, there are many possibilities for more depth than the original.

Yes, now if only we could actually get some some new games...

Then how is it possible that I, in fact, like Wind Waker's graphics?

In any case, I was merely pointing out the differing styles that are possible with cel-shading.
