Reader Reviews / Sonic Heroes, SONIC HEEEEROOOOOW BOATS
« on: March 18, 2005, 07:12:38 PM »
Sonic Team sat down and listened to the fans for this game. "Actually make Sonic the main focus, ditch the crap-rock, fix the camera!" they cried in absolute pain as Mr. Naka ran them over in his race car while listening to Crush 40.

"I DISLIKE YOUR COMMENTS AND WILL BECOME A SUCCESS IN THE UK, A HAW HAW HAW"
About an hour later, Sonic Heroes was finished and on retail shelves. What's this? Sonic's got team based sex antics going on now? Oh okay. This obviously requires several teams of freaks. Remember those idiots from Knuckles Chaotix? Of course you don't, because the world was trying to forget them. BUT NO, Sega will jog your memory. "HERE'S ANGSTY PURPLE THING, HAPPY BEE AND BIG SLOW CROC" they yell as crumbs stick to your face.

In total, there's four teams of three characters. Each fart around the very same levels, but with silly different bits of storyline that all eventually cross over. It's a game about talking to dead people. Every team has a fast character, a flying character and a ANGRY BREAK DOWN WALLS character. 'Cept Big the Cat's angry in a 'where's my brain' kind of way. You need to switch between these characters all the time. This manages to totally destroy the whole Sonic feel. You might be running really fast for a few seconds then UH OH it's time to switch over to slow breaking down walls character to.. you know.. break down some walls that are there for no reason.

I'm sure Robotnik (or Eggman as Sega like to call him now, another delightful decision) has nothing better to do than stroll down to the beach and put up some walls. "I enjoy long walks on the beach. So I can put some walls all over it". The flying characters are typically there just so you can fly for a few seconds only to somehow glitch up and end up falling into an endless background JPEG. How can Cream even manage to lift Amy and Big? His name is Big for a reason (THIS IS NOT SEX RELATED).  Cream's arms should totally break off and blood would cover the entire level. Knuckles would be all "hooo-waaaah".

Sonic Team attempted to give some of the levels a retro look. The checkerboard textures that were very present in Sonic 1 are back on the Seaside Something or Other level, there's a new Casino level. And um. There's a level that's.. er.. has the word Metropolis in it. Sadly, the levels are very VERY poorly designed. Very. They drag on for far too long, typically have very little checkpoints and require more rail grinding or breaking stuff than running. In fact, you won't be running much in this game at all. Doing so could result in death, thanks to the return of terrible camera man (Lakitu's confused cousin) and some shocking clipping.

There's an entire level called Rail Canyon. Can you guess what this level requires you to do? Sell ice cream. The fun part is where bomb trains crash into you and you witness the Game Over screen for the 7th time in the last three minutes. Jumping from rail to rail should of been easy, it's not. There are times when you press left or right + jump and UH OH YOU'RE NOW SPAZING IN THE AIR? Death. To top this all off, Tails feels the need to yell "I'm falling!" when you're falling. They've changed his voice actor for this game, too. I think they're going for that three year old feel now.

When you get to a switch, one of the characters will insist on blurting out "I wonder what this switch will do?" WELL JESUS, I DUNNO. MAYBE IT'LL MAKE ENEMIES APPEAR LIKE THE OTHER SEVEN HUNDRED HAVE? Music is another sore point. Once again, we have the pleasure of dreadful rock music and other depressing lack of melody lack of meaning music to fall down holes to. Though I did rather enjoy Casino Park's music, it was catchy as hell. Too bad the level involved confusing pinball machines of doom.

The game will last you a long time, I spose. If you can be bothered to play the same levels as the other characters (which you'll need to do in order to actually complete it). There's a sad 2 player mode where you fall down holes together, also. I think the game also has an options menu. Some stuff just doesn't work in 3D. Sonic's that stuff. I can't wait for the Shadow the Hedgehog game. WATCH OUT PRINCE OF PERSIA.

This game gets two breadrolls out of a bakers dozen.

Reader Reviews / 18 Wheeler, an epic tale of truckin' ~ Sega
« on: February 09, 2005, 04:25:24 PM »
Picture this. You're in the shops, shopping for eggs. It's 4:30 in the morning, you woke up in a cold sweat with a burning desire for eggs. You casualy glance around the egg section, looking for the perfect carton of eggs. Then RUMBLE NOISE AND RUMBLE SENSATION. There's something coming, it's coming fast and all over the place. The not yet awake store clerk scratches his neck.

CRUSH. "SORRY, I HAVE TO DELIVER TWO TICKETS TO PARADISE"
An 18 Wheeler has burst thru the wall, knocking down various small goods. You've been struck by a smooth turtle wax.

This is 18 Wheeler, a life altering experience by Sega's AM2 or 3. One of them. Published by the successful company Acclaim. It's a mish mash of previous Sega games, like Crazy Taxi, Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi. Except you don't pick goons up to drive them to KFC and the game isn't called Crazy Taxi. Rather, you're given very detailed instructions at the start of each level by a blubber ball, such as 'deliver this on time' or 'you'd better make it on time'. I think he actually taught me about life, I owe this game a lot. You have to deliver garbage like boats or crates of empty code. Then you're off. OFF.

The first thing that'll strike you is the incredible graphics. The arcade game was ported to Dreamcast, then PlayStation 2, then GameCube. So you just know its history is quality goodness. Low res blurry textures that only stretch out an inch or so before becoming bland lumps of solid colour, disgustingly beautiful lens flare that fills the screen with white, nice thick 50Hz borders (exclusive to PAL version). It's quite a wonder how they managed to get this running on what limited technology we have these days.

Blubber Ball (Blubs for short) has a big whinge as soon as you start, reminding you to get there on time. I think he has vagina pains if you're a second too late. "Sorry sir" "ARR, MY VAGINA"
So you obviously must hurry! Nothing gets in the way of your 18 wheeler, cars gets pushed aside, overhead signs break, entire houses implode as you throttle over them. Killing thousands of Pikmin. Trees though, or even shrubs by the side of the road. WATCH OUT. These can stop you dead in your tracks.

You have a very VERY limited amount of time to get to the destination, your boss' vagina will cramp up on him and he'll double over and cry. So of course there are black trucks you can total to earn some more time. Why just the other day I blew up a truck because I was late to a meeting. OF THE MINDS. Also, there's Mean Face McMean. He's a rival trucker, and he's very angry. He'll invade your radio proclaiming to get out of his way. He'll try and push you into oncoming traffic or dump his load in front of you.
"I WILL LOSE MY CARGO TO SLOW YOU DOWN, GREENHORN! GLOBBLE GLOBBLE GLOBBLE"

You can't kill him, sadly. If you beat him to the destination however, you'll be rewarded with a parking challenge. Park the truck, win a prize. It's like, a new horn or steering wheel. Seriously. There are FOUR amazing levels in this game, each will take about three to ten minutes to finish, so you can be sure this game will last forever.

When you finish the last level, you get to see your trucker wiggle their flab out of the truck and wave to you. Then it goes back to the title screen, I shed a tear.

Music is of awesome quality, it's lots of banjos and garbage bin lids. There's also a two player mode (yes, they thought of everything!) which is quite amusing. You have to pick up stuff fast. FAST LIKE THE SONIC.

I think I will try out my new rating system, it's in BETA stage.

This game: 0.0
It's so good your face will look a bit like that when you realize you've spent money on it. I know I did!

DS to get Piracy protection in Australia
The Nintendo DS will feature locally developed software that allows players to wirelessly share a game without downloading a permanent copy to other machines.

The software, RSA BSAFE, will be included in the console, which debuts on February 24.

The encryption software, developed at RSA Security's Brisbane Development Centre, protects games as they are played and shared across wireless links.

The software locks content so it cannot be illegally copied from the original cartridge or disk.

Games software downloaded by other players during a session was erased as soon as the console was closed, according to a Nintendo Australia spokeswoman.

"This protects Nintendo and our games development partners from piracy. "It does not have any adverse effect on consumers, nor on the play experience." The player with a DS version of Super Mario, for example, simply loads the cartridge into the console and then seeks other DS users in the neighbourhood to join the game.

"They come along and decide to play, tap into it, and then play against each other," she said.

"As soon as they shut their machine, they don't have the game any more. It's securely held on the cartridge owned by the first player."

The content protection system was not yet widespread, she said.

"With a lot of the games, the consumer advice panel will let you know whether you can transfer data from one DS machine to another."

With two screens and touchscreen technology, the DS is designed as a highly interactive, multi-player platform that supports wireless gameplay, PictoChat and instant messaging with other DS consoles up to 30m away. Nintendo secures the information communicated between two or more consoles with two cryptographic toolkits, Crypto-C and Crypto-C ME, developed in Brisbane, RSA BDC director Glenn Dickman said.

"Our security software encrypts the information as it's passed backwards and forwards between the multiple users," he said.

"At the same time, it protects the digital rights of game publishers by ensuring games can only be used under certain conditions."

RSA's BDC was developing a digital rights management toolkit based on the emerging Open Mobile Alliance DRM standard, Mr Dickman said.

The standard would provide an alternative to Nintendo's proprietary Japanese DRM system.

Ahahaha, Mr. Dickman.

Developer: Z-Axis
Publisher: Acclaim
RRP: Around $5 AUD

This is a very new game for your Nintendo Computer Video Entertainment System. It's by Acclaim, who have made countless amazing titles in the past, and look to have a very strong future. So you already know it's going to be something special (I felt the magic XXX/Why). Upon glancing at the back of the box, you will discover that the game is about Dave Mirra. Dave Mirra and BMX's. Maybe two of them, which makes the title of the game quite misleading. But still, I'm not complaining. They boast about 'Super High Rez' graphics that are apparently exclusive to the GameCube version, that's very good because I quite enjoyed Rez on PS2. If you're wondering, this game was originally made for the Amiga and 32X back in 2004.

They don't lie, no sir. The game features a vast number of levels, and each are made of over thirteen polygons. This is something no other console could ever hope to match (I'm looking at you, Sanyo VCR), and I wouldn't be surprised if Dave Mirra BMX 2 pushes the GameCube's silicon graphics to the limit. Referring back to the box of boasting, we also get a gigantic two exclusive levels. I am sure Amiga owners are crying as they read this. However, only one level is avaliable to play from the start, and you will have to complete goals to progress. Goals include 'jump over car', 'peddle backwards' and 'stay awake'. The game supports the control pad, which is refreshing.

Pressing buttons will perform what's known in BMX terms as a 'move', these are needed to complete the tricky well thought out goals. Mashing a number of buttons in a gibbon like vice grip of the controller will perform more complicated 'moves', which can often make your selected bike person spin around in circles or simply do nothing. One of my first goals was to perform a 90 degree turn in the air, it was set out by a person who sets out the goals when you approach them. To be honest, I was disapointed. Especially after playing the latest skateboarding game, Torn and Hacked Skateboarding for Sega Master System. See, 'moves' had meaning in that game. Such as the risky 'sex change' you were asked to perform during the first level. 90 degree turns don't excite.

What are the levels like, you ask? Are they filled with lava and coins to collect? No, I am afraid Acclaim did not get around to this. Some do however contain cars and water. Cars add a certain element of danger to the game, because they can hit you. Get hit and you're gone, you're gone. For a few seconds, then you reappear on the bike with a smile. Water can slow you down, because you instantly fall off your bike and snap your spine when you touch water. It's probably a good thing there's no stormy weather in the game.

Sound and music are very important in these type of RPG games, and Acclaim know their stuff. The game features a whopping seven songs, one of them by Godsmack. So you just know you'll get angry and punch the wall when you're playing this game. Acclaim quite obviously crammed as much as they could onto the disc, I don't think we'll ever see a playlist bigger than what's present in Dave Mirra BMX 2. Sound is limited to horns beeping when you get hit by a car (nobody slows down, everyone's out to murder Dave Mirra and co.) and "aaauuuugggh" yells when you're caught under a car and being dragged around the road.

Overall, this is a stunning game, and one that developers will be ripping off in the near future. Resident Evil 4, though amazing, has already been pushed off the top of the hill. By Dave Mirra. Dave Mirra and his BMX. But though the game is mind boggling in every way, it lacks skins and the option to play online with idiots.

Second opinion, Matt: This game's crap because it's not on PSP and PSP has Atrac and a big screen and it also has graphics, I rang up my Mum the other day and she said everyone's making games on PSP.

Presentation: 10 Simply jaw dropping title screen, it features the title of the game and a blue-ish slightly bump mapped background JPEG.
Graphics: 9.5 The smooth frame rate makes up for the complete lack of effort in a HUGE way. If only more developers followed Acclaim.
Sound: 2 The beeps of the horn, the complaining about society of Godsmack.. It just.. works. To be brutally honest though, we hooked this game up to our $80,000 stereo and it didn't live up to our obscene expectations. Sure, it'd sound perfect on a lesser system, but hell, why would you bother?
Gameplay: 5.5 Though everything has been polished in an insane degree and it's the perfect game, we can't help but whinge about the fact that you can't select a different skin for your rider.
Lasting appeal: 3.0 The single player is addictive, and will simply keep you entertained for months. Plug in three other controllers and get three mates round the TV and you've got the absolute best multiplayer title on any system. However, it lacks online play. Massive blow.
Overall (out of 10 / not an average): 7.9

Wikky wa. I can't get awwwwwn MSN at the moment. So THREAD TIME, disco party. David Jones (who? ) are doin' 50% off GC games till like, next week sometime. I checked out the one in Parramatta, nothing exciting. Mickey Mouse Magical Masturbation Mirror was like $10, Universal Studio's (lolol) was $25. Yeah, and a bunch of other stupid games. It would seem they did have MP2 in though, because there was a sticker below an empty bit of shelf for it.

EB's sale is pretty depressing this year (in regards to Niiintendo games). They have some real good PS2 games at 50% off, but I think it depends on which store you check. Parramatta (hey I was in Parramatta today, NO WAY) had Second Sight, Silent Hill 4 and stuff for $50. STUFF. Paper Mario 2 was $75. They also had a little sign near the GBA section saying to pre-order DS. "Pre-order the console of tomorrow, today!" blol. I should of asked if they had a set price. BUT I DID NOT.

Now even EB won't let people know the GameCube is on the market. EB! Hello folks, would you like to buy little Timmy a new video gaming device for Christmas this year? We have ever so many!

We have GBA SP and Xbox, because GBA is the newest portable machine on the market and it has Shrek. Xbox has graphics and the internet! What? Little Timmy already has the MA15+ Halo 2 and every possible version of Shrek on GBA? Well then, have you thought about getting the PS2? Hmm, what's that? You have one? You got it years ago? WELL WE HATE YOU. There's a NEW PS2 out, and it has graphics and the internet! It's also SMALL.

THAT IS ALL. PLEASE BUY ONE. Oh, I think we also have the childish Nintendo GameCube trash, it's purple. Little Timmy will TRANSFORM into a flaming homosexual if you get this system for him, please avoid it. We've slashed it from $199.95 to $139 with a free memory card and controller because children fear its lack of graphics and internet.

FIFTY THREE PAGES OF PS2 AND XBOX. GC gets a whopping one page. Wanna know what's on the page before it? GBA! Pac-Man World is the focus, because it's the best game on the market. What's on the next page? GoldenEye. They did focus all attention on the GC version though, because we all know it's much better to advertise than Metroid Prime 2.

, where are you? ;___;

Zooooooooom!

Wha. Atari are angry at EB, EB are angry at Atari. Chaos in garbage land! See, Atari finally caught on that EB imported a whole heap of PSOIII to sell after Atari just suddenly cancelled the release, because there was an actual demand for the game. "WHAT'S THIS? MONEY? WE WANT SOME"

Apparently there was a BATTLE, and now Atari in all their demented wisdom, are distributing the game. Only to EB stores, mind you. This meant that they could pick a fight with the EB's that were selling the imported PSO's, because Atari is now the official distributer thingy of the game. *Sigh* I guess that Sega/Atari Australia article was some crap rumour. This basically will result in even less amounts of PSOIII avaliable to buy. EB is AAANGRY at this move.

Also, EB will have a deal with Wario Ware GC when it comes out, trade two games in and get it for free. I guess that means the game will have an RRP of $49.95 now. Whatever, Australia is depressing.

"WOW!" (Theme Park voice sample)
NAL have started advertising Pokemon Colosseum! On the television technical box! I think this is the first TV advert since um, Battletoads came out on NES. My memory's a little hazy. Anyway, it totally sucks. The entire ad is all gameplay videos, which is cool, but they captured it on a Game Gear with a TV Tuner or something. Hyper PlayStation-looking graphics. The drunk Aussie dude is back to sort of sound interested in the game!

"YOU CAN PLAY THE GAME IN TWO MODES!"
"WHAT IS IT?"
"IT'S BLOOD, JILL"

Also, for those that don't know, Atari cancelled the PSOIII release here. OW. Apparently they released Samurai Jerk on GameCube last week. I'm yet to see a copy for GC. Now all we can look foward to from them for the rest of the year is Ribbit King, which Atari's publishing in the UK. It might not get released here.

Cool dudes let's dance! (CLEAN MIX) STEP STEP.

BLOL EDIT:
There's a new GameCube demo disc in stores!
It's only got Pokemon and Mario Golf playable, and Pokemon seems to be the whole game with a time limit, so unless you want to ruin the introduction, don't play it. =|

It's got alot of videos on the disc, though. Including the full "Who are You?" advert in shiny high res goodness. There's a Pokemon video, Mario Golf, Players Choice, and some more videos I'm forgetting. Hurray!

Nice one, NAL! Saw it in EB today, one copy sitting there. $100. I sorta maybe kinda thought Nintendo might have reduced the price a bit, seeing as it's six months late. But no. One thing though, I think there's more detail on the spine. I don't remember the 1080 logo being all fancy on my Euro version.

It's cool because it'll get no advertising at all, and alot of people have already just got the PAL version from DVDCrave. Here comes the money!

Also, the dude at EB confirmed that Wario Ware GC will indeed have an RRP of $99.95 instead of the $69.95 it should be. Yay for over pricing! Also, omg we get Donkey Kong Country 2 on GBA FIRST apparently. zomg blob. DKC more like DDR am I right.

67
*GASPU*
I hurled myself into EB today, and , they've got a brand new GameCube thingy set up in there. Fancy 'GameCube' TV, with a Mario Golf cardboard thing on top. A Final Fantasy trailer was playing away. It ends and zoooom, it's a demo disc featuring playable demos of Mario Golf, 1080 and for some demented reason, Metroid Prime. I've forgotten what all the videos were, one was FF:CC.. and um. Yeah.

The idiots didn't have a controller plugged into the GC, though. THAT'S GRAND.

68
We can't keep bumping the news thread in Talkback forever.
So like, yeah. The buy two game, get Zelda free thing is official now. (Big thanks to Mario for grabbing this linkage so I can re-post it in this thread and go uuuumf!)

I'm down with a copy of MGS and Pokemon Channel. I'm just a tad sore about the whole having to destroy the boxes to get the barcode. But 'oh well'. I spose it does prevent turds from getting the games from EB and returning them within the week.

"Erm, I got this last week.. I forgot the docket, though"
"DOESN'T MATTER, HERE'S MONEY BACK WANNA BUY AN XBOX? MGS: TTS IS COMING TO N-GAGE IN A FEW DAYS"
"Awesome. Now I have 423,000 copies of Zelda in my room!"
"I LIKE MONEY"

I wonder if they'll accept barcodes/thingies from games purchased from DVDCrave? Seeing as they get alot of their PAL titles from the UK, and Nintendo have a strict 'OZZTRALIER ONLY' thing. *Shrugs shoulders*

Wellity, wellity, wellity..

Headed on in to EB today to pick up my precious copy of Sonic Heroes. "Oh, it seems it's not coming out today" the dude behind the counter proclaims. "I don't know what the hell's going on with it" he continues. That's just great. I rang up EB yesterday just to make sure, and they said yes, it was still on track for a release, today. Gah, I ask him if he could ring me on my mobile in case they do get it in, and I leave.

Off to The Games Wizards just to check. "No, Atari can't give us a confirmed date anymore. We might get it in next week or something" the girl tells me while pretending to look busy on the computer. Same story at another EB I went to, they tell me it might be released next week.

What the hell is wrong with Atari? They can release a bajillion copies of rubbish like Terminator 3, Enter the Matrix and Test Drive Overdrive on time, yet when it comes to games people actually want to play, they stuff it all up.

"Phantasy Star Online? Let's throw three copies in Australia, sounds like a plan. Hey, lets not release the Xbox version at all. Skies of Arcadia, who the hell wants to play that game? Lets get a few thousand more copies of Yu-Gi-Oh Color Book for GBC on the shelves. Guilty Gear X? Nobody likes that game, we know. Four copies."

God knows what the Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes release will be like. They can't even get the title right on their website, listing it as Metal Gear Solid 2. Which was pushed back to an April release last night (well, according to their release list) , by the way.

Ahoy all,

Remember that episode of South Park where they explain duck and cover, for when the volcano explodes?
Welp, this Flash animation explains duck and cover for an atomic bomb...

And yes, it's hilarious. Beyond hilarious actually, I'd go as far as to scream "Funny fun fun" but I won't.
It also has something to do with Nintendo, the Earthbound characters are used =P

Duck and Cover!!!

It'll take a few minutes to load for 56k'ers, but it's worth it.

General Chat / Ahh, good ol' Engrish fun!

Heh,

I feel sorry for the people who bought this bootleg version of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. It was released in Hong Kong on DVD around two weeks after the movie had hit cinema's in the US. It features.... Unusual translations?

The page features around 50 screen shots from the bootleg DVD, with the English subtitles.
Very funny stuff.

General Chat / Sonic the Hedgehog 2 BETA
« on: March 20, 2003, 01:06:16 PM »
Unreleased products are still protected by copyright.

It's funky! And since it's a Beta, it's not considered evil to download it!
It has some pretty freaky stuff in it, like "Genocide City Zone", it's nothing more than a scrambled background, but damn, what a name!

Also included is a "Wood Zone" and "Hidden Palace Zone"
You can't get very far in them, but damn good stuff. Wonder why Sega cut them from the final version?

The music is also different, slightly. It's incomplete, so stuff sounds 'wrong' at times. Metropolis Zone's music is very evil in this. I like it!

To access these levels, you'll have to use the level select code. On the title screen, hold A+B+C and press start. Or it depends what you've got your keyboard keys mapped as.

There's also a number of different animations (Check out Sonic's skid animation, cool sh!t)

.. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, make sure you have an emulator, and remember, downloading full version games is evil!

Nintendo Gaming / What's this? A new GameCube deal in Australia?
« on: February 13, 2003, 05:32:37 PM »
Odd. After visiting a number of shops this morning, I noticed a kind of glitch in the Matrix. I was seeing the same deal blasted all over the place.

K-Mart, Target and EB World are all featuring the same offer at this point in time, a GameCube for $299 (roughly $150 US) with the choice of either SFA, Eternal Darkness, Pikmin, NBA Courtside (ooh, get excited!), Luigi's Mansion or Resident Evil.
The thing is, it's not an official poster claiming these deals, but rather small little printed flyer's near the GC section.

An un-official GameCube deal through-out numerous shops, tell your friends, people of Australia! =)

Oh yes, and Nintendo Australia have announced the free-game deal (RE 0, MP and so on) that will be going on in the US, is going to happen here. Will they advertise it? Pfft.
