So that's Jon Lindemann and James Jones on the top (Jon I recognise for his baldness, James from his surly expression) and Greg Leahy and Jonny Metts on the bottom. Jonny's hair I recognise from photos and I always imagined Greg to look like John Oliver from The Daily Show, so he fits too.

TalkBack / Re: A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia
« on: April 18, 2012, 12:33:19 AM »
There are several ways of playing this game - the way it was intended - use the treasure in the subway and underground on a long and roundabout trek to get back to the surface, followed by a rocket trip to Blobolonia and beat the game that way, or do what I did as a kid and skip half of the underground (especially the finnicky underwater sections) by opening a hole above one of the later chambers and suicide diving onto the floor of the cavern below. Yes, you end up with less treasure/jellybeans/vitamins but it also meant the difference between gettibg a Game Over in the caverns and getting to Blobolonia at all.

Reading this article hit me right in the nostalgia glands, but I cannot imagine the frustration you must have gone through to beat this game in 2012.

I voted for BG&E.  I keep hearing about how it's a great Zelda-like.  Also I think it's easily the most available to people as it's on the most platforms.

By the way, it's available for download on Steam, so there's really no excuse to not play it if it gets chosen.

EDIT: Also, I have zero interest in shooters.

It's not like ALttP didn't have puzzles of its own, though.  Having to use the cape or the cane that protected you to cross spikes or using the Cane of Somaria in Turtle Rock, for example, or figuring out how to get to the Misery Mire by travelling in/out of the dark world, then using a specific spell a la Zelda 2.

Most of these were more "figure out how to do it then do it before the time runs out" sort of puzzles, like lighting all the candles at the same time.

I don't think Skyward Sword will necessarily abandon the "dungeon item being required to beat the dungeon" structure, but I do think (more hope) that the line between dungeon and overworld will make it seem less obvious and structured.  Think the dark forest in ALttP.
As I said during this episode, ALttP has some very memorable "Eureka!" moments in it (the example I referenced was bombing to create the shaft of light into the empty boss room in the Thieves' Town dungeon, which then reveals the boss when you take the prisoner girl into the light). However, the puzzles are not the "bread-and-butter" of the dungeons as they are in later Zelda games, and a good number of them seem rather straightforward now (like the time-limited ones you describe above). Remember, this discussion is all in relative--not absolute--terms, comparing Zelda games to one another.

The dark forest is an interesting example as the overworld in that case is almost part of the dungeon itself, as it contains several entry points and you have to travel between dungeon and overworld to make it through successfully. The only problem with this in ALttP is: if you die inside the dungeon you restart at an entrance, whereas if you die outside you appear atop the Golden Pyramid and have to make your way back to the forest; that discrepancy would probably need to be addressed if a similar approach were employed to dungeons in Skyward Sword.
I see what you're saying.  And yes, little quibbles like where you restart would have to be fixed in Skyward Sword if they want something like that to work.  It should be a trivial matter.

Speaking of dungeons with overworld elements, the desert dungeon in ALttP and one or two dungeons in Oracle of Seasons/Ages had you crossing into the overworld in order to complete the dungeon as well.

They've clearly experimented with the idea in the 2D games.  Why never the 3D games?  Was the reason technical (loading times etc.)?

To anybody who likes the different brand of puzzle solving from A Link to the Past, there's been one after Ocarina of Time to follow that mould, which is Four Swords Adventures. Obviously, because it was clearly adhering to ALttP in several ways, that's no surprise, but it's probably a game that many people missed. There are a lot of puzzles based on the formations of the four Links, and very few item-based puzzles, as you can only hold one at a time, and they are taken away at the end of every level.
Yes.  Every Zelda fan should play this game.  I played it in single-player and even then it was fantastic.

On the previous existance of the Lucky Egg: Thanks. Makes me want to back and level up some dudes in HG. My bad for not realizing it. As for the menus, that shyt needs to organize its damn self, thankyouverymuch.

It's not surprising you didn't realize it. The only way to get it was on wild Chansey, and it was extremely rare (not only were Chansey themselves hard to find, but there was only a 1% chance of running into one with a Lucky Egg).
To be fair, you can game the system to get rare held items.

First, have a pokemon with the Compound Eyes ability at the head of your party (this increases the chances of wild Pokemon having a held item in the first place).  Let it faint deliberately, but keep it at the head of your party.  This means that its effect on wild Pokemon is still in place.

For the second 'mon in your party, use something with the Frisk ability (lets you see what items a foe is holding) and the move Thief.  Make sure this one isn't holding an item or it won't work.

Then just run around in the grass and pilfer whatever you need to from the wild Pokemon when Frisk detects an item.

I really liked this podcast.  It just showed up in my iTunes feed as a pleasant little surprise.

I wouldn't mind at all if it became a regular thing or spun off into its own podcast, but if that's not possible, then it being like a regular segment in the normal show.

Was just rushing in to say that the Lucky Egg item isn't new at all.  I have like 11 in my copy of Soul Silver that I pilfered off wild Chanseys.

Then I saw that Shaymin already beat me to the punch.  Bravo.

So I found the place.  Hi!

I'm another Aussie gamer but I've decided not to put up with NAL's crap any longer and am importing systems/games from the US exclusively from now on.

« on: March 13, 2011, 06:10:26 PM »
I am going to have to disagree a little. I have had an ADSL modem brick when I updated it with the official firmware that failed to unbrick following the companies procedure. What surprises me is that it doesn't have some sort of ability to fall back or roll back to hardwired 1.0. Devices brick because they are badly designed or have zero room for contingencies or are draconian.

I only hope this is only boiler plate as I know I will end up soft moding this in time to play import, if nothing else get games at a fair price. Getting bricked would be like getting shot while walking on the grass at the park.
I'm personally just going to import the system from the get-go.  I imported my Wii from the US and have never regretted doing so.  It'll mean that I'll miss out on some Japan-only games, but that's still an upgrade from Australia's release schedule.

I bought this game because of James' description of it on RFN.  It hadn't even been on my radar before that.

Thing is, it's taking AGES to get here.  It's been 10 days and counting.  :\

EDIT: 13 days and counting :(

I think everyone is panicking at nothing.  At best, this is a garbled translation by the manager of a single retail store.

My guess is that while the 3DS will log activity on your system, Nintendo will never actively brick systems remotely.  That violates various consumer rights laws and will only lead to bad publicity and class action lawsuits without helping the bottom line.  Disabling a CE device you paid money for is akin to vandalism - it'll never happen.

However, if you do soft-mod your system somehow, it means that if you try to update in future, the system will be different to what the update is expecting.  Sometimes, this will mean that the update won't install correctly and introduce bugs - resulting in a brick.  If you tried to sell the system back to a retailer and they could tell (via the log) that you soft-modded it or violated some higher level system permission, they then have every right to refuse to buy it from you since you modded the system.  After that point, they have no guarantee that it will work as intended and have a duty of care to not sell a potentially defective unit on to other customers

If you mod a system or otherwise do something to it that allows it to do things it wasn't designed for, that's the same as spray painting it or putting sticker decals all over it.  You wouldn't expect to be able to take it back to the store for a refund or to get a good trade-in price for it if it isn't close to the same condition as you bought it in.  This has nothing to do with Nintendo having a killswitch they can trip.  Regardless of how much they might want to do it, it would be breaking the law.
