If that rumor about the controller having a screen is true and it's similar to the Dreamcast's VMU, Nintendo might as well call it a "Gameboy." /nostalgia erection

I still think there should only be 1 controller. Nintendo is worth billions; they're Research and Development department is the best in the industry. Figure it out. If they can't, Nintendo needs to lower the prices. Having to spend the same amount or more on controllers than the console itself is out-of-this-world ridic.

It's even being rumored to have FULL BC with the Wii, because it would be STUPID not to. How do you follow up your biggest console success in this day and age and not have some way of easing in all the customers of the past 5 years, especially the massive casual market that now all own HD TV's?
The Wii is Nintendo's first home console with backwards compatibility so shipping without any backwards compatibility is not without precedence. Nintendo will put backwards compatibility in if they can because it's a nice feature, but it's hardly stupid not to and Nintendo has had no problem ditching this or that in the past. Most casual gamers probably have no idea what backward compatibility even is. The idea of "easing" customers in is total bullshit. If Nintendo wants to keep all of those casual gamers, they absolutely must come up with something brand new and innovative that resonates with that segment of the market because being able to play legacy games isn't going to hack it. Assuming Nintendo gets that killer app for casuals, if they really want to be nice and totally sweeten the deal, they can always upconvert Wii Sports and Resort and preload them onto the new console's internal memory.

If I just built a console with last generation specs as a cost cutting measure because I spent a fortune on researching and developing a motion controller I wasn't even sure was going to be a hit, I'd continue regurgitating that line about specs not mattering too. Nintendo did the exact opposite with 3DS. If specs and graphics didn't matter, Nintendo never would have made what is essentially a portable Wii.

The Social Network
It was great. Funny and just plain entertaining. I doubt Mark Zuckerberg is 1) that witty in real life 2) that much of a douchebag. The movie forced the audience to sympathize with Eduardo Saverin and I believe the real Saverin was a consultant on the novel the film was based on so no surprise here. Andrew Garfield sounds like Anakin Skywalker and that's going to be really distracting in The Amazing Spider-Man, but he's a much better actor than Hayden Christensen so I'm not worried.

The Bourne Trilogy
I only finished Identity when it first came out and and saw bits of Supremacy and I refused to watch Ultimatum without seeing the first 2. Well, I finally got around to seeing everything. I was blown away. Besides The Lord of the Rings, this is the only trilogy where each installment is better than one before. I'm upset that they're continuing the series without Matt Damon. What the hell is the point?

Sucker Punch
Everyone bitches about the story not making sense. That wasn't necessarily my issue with it. I got it, but there's so much of it and not that interesting. It's too simplistic to spend that much screen time on it. It took like 10 minutes to get Baby Doll into the asylum and 10 more minutes to get her to do something there. The action scenes are cool; I just wanted more of them. And I don't know how Zack Snyder did it, but somehow he made Jena Malone super hot instead of merely pretty. She also had the coolest action sequence in the movie which no easy feat. Also, Emily Browning shouldn't be allowed by law to not wear a school girl outfit.

Actual value vs. Perceived value. Nintendo could have sold their hardware for less. However, while Nintendo is undoubtedly pushing profit margins, they also don't want their hardware to appear dated when put next to the competition. Nintendo may offer a completely different experience than Apple, but both companies are still competing for consumer dollars. If there's only $300 to spend, Nintendo obviously wants that spent on 3DS. It's not as simple as saying, "Oh, cheaper is more appealing." It is but it isn't. If Nintendo sells for significantly less, 3DS looks like lesser hardware even if it isn't and could lose a sale due to the perception of looking old or dated. Not all consumers are informed. In fact, most are not.

When it comes to consoles, Nintendo can definitely sell for $300, maybe even $350. Not saying I'd like it, but Nintendo could get away with it. With the Wii, Nintendo has learned that people will pay almost any amount of money if something is desirable enough. Depending on how confident they are on the innovative features of their next console, Nintendo could innovate, profit, and compete power-wise for a fairly reasonable price.

I'm sticking to my guns. I believe the successor to the Wii is going to be a beast. While I think it should launch in 2011, it'll launch in 2012, give or take a year before Sony/MS launch their consoles, and still be comparable in power. I'm iffy on backwards compatibility. There's a good chance Nintendo could ditch optical media. They've never liked discs, only begrudgingly employing them due to the lack of a viable alternative at the time. And Nintendo doesn't give a shizzle about our backcatalog. Backwards compatibility is not a priority for them and they'll do away with it if they can/have to and they know most of us would rebuy those games anyway. Admit it. I can. I paid $50 for each Metroid Prime game and still bought Trilogy. Even though I got it on sale, I still bought it. Why? Because. How many of us are going to buy Ocarina of Time again? They can toss in Master Quest and call it a deal, but I have that too...

I played around with the 3DS at Best Buy today. They have it screwed down maybe 3 feet off the ground so I had to lean down to play it which wasn't ideal but I still contorted my body into the 3D sweet spot. I saw the 3D effect just fine. It was neat-o and all but that launch is awful and that, of course, is the dealbreaker. I can wait. A redesign is coming (my guess is Fall 2012), will have better battery life, will likely be larger etc. etc. etc. It'll be the 3DS I wish the current 3DS was and have at least 18 months' worth of software, namely the ones I'm even remotely interested in Mario 3DS and Revelations in addition to surprises in the coming months (still crossing my fingers for 2D Metroid). I'm always excited for new hardware, but it gets easier and easier to play the wait-and-see card when inevitable revisions and redesigns are the norm. I'm also buying a phone within the next 12 months and that's a bigger priority than a game system I'm not going to play much, partly due to the poor selection of available titles and because my gaming has simply decreased as I've inched ever closer to 30 (I'm 26).

You guys are gonna make me take M:OM out of it's case for the 1st time and actually play it just to see how bad it really is.
Other M really isn't that bad. It's "bad" for a Metroid game and it shits all over the rest of the series. Otherwise, it's pretty fun. Look fondly back on Super Metroid or Metroid Prime... then lower your expectations. You'll be fine.
Hell, they should have localized them a long time ago.  So Wii owners make Nintendo rich and Nintendo moves our games to another system and leaves us hanging with nothing?  Don't they owe us a little better than that?
How are you surprised? Traditionally, Nintendo's support slows down upon entering the 5th year on their home consoles. And I think it's a bit demanding to say Nintendo owes you anything. You're obviously the type that is never satisfied with anything. Even if Nintendo brought over both Xenoblade and The Last Story, you'd say they owed you something else... probably after trashing what horrible games Xenoblade and The Last Story are for not catering to your specific tastes.

Both God of War and Jak and Daxter were originally conceived to eventually end. Nintendo never planned and probably has no intention on there being a Zelda end game. Of course, Sony has cheated by commissioning side stories to extend both of those franchises and Kratos is in f-ing everything nowadays. Point is Sony would do exactly what Nintendo does with their IPs if they were popular enough. Unfortunately, Sony doesn't have the history that Nintendo does. They're creating IPs because they don't have as many established, but we're already seeing the path their traveling down. Uncharted and Resistance are NGP's big games.

Anyway, E3 predictions...

This is going to be mainly a 3DS show. Nintendo will have Mario 3DS playable and it'll be based on Super Mario Bros. 3. That's a safe bet. Skyward Sword will be the only thing buzz worthy on the Wii though I think they'll announce The Last Story and Xenoblade for North America, but Zelda will be given more attention and rightfully so.

Nintendo will announce a new 2D Metroid for 3DS.

Capcom will announce Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for 3DS.

Square Enix will announce a remake of Final Fantasy VI for 3DS.... and tease a remake of Final Fantasy VII because they're jerks and like to pull on the heartstrings of fans.

Bold Prediction
Nintendo will announce their partners for the successor of the Wii as well as the console itself. Details will be slim, definitely no controller. We'll get a codename. They'll aim to launch Q2 2012. I think they'll announce a timeframe for launch to avoid their stocks getting raped like what happened last year when they waited so long to announce 3DS wasn't going to make a 2010 launch. I still think Nintendo would rather launch the successor to the Wii during the Q4 holiday season but 1st party software isn't ready for 2011 and the Wii is going to limp through November and December and certainly will not make it to 2012's holiday season. I could see Nintendo launching in June. 3DS should hold its own until then.

It is probably the simple matter that Nintendo doesn't care so they make zero effort to accomodate Epic and Epic doesn't feel like jumping through extra hoops that Sony and Microsoft don't make them jump through.
I think Nintendo cares and so does Epic if only because they both could be making so much money if the other relented. It just seems like a really drawn out game of chicken. Who is going to buckle first? I don't think Mark Rein has anything against Nintendo, but he makes no money off of the. That's the bottom line when it comes to his anti-Nintendo rhetoric. He doesn't wipe his ass with $100 bills by allocating company resources to reconstruct engines for specific platforms. The Unreal engine is a one size fits all and developers love it. For that reason, he probably feels companies like Nintendo should bend to his whims. So much support hinges on it. On the other end of the spectrum, Nintendo would have to rethink their entire strategy to accomodate Epic and by extension 3rd parties. Nintendo is a very profit focused company. 3DS is probably marked up close to $100. They like making money off of hardware even though they make more on software. To employ hardware capable of running the Unreal engine with as little optimization necessary would require Nintendo to bump up the specs and sell near or close to breaking even.

I really like this quote from Iwata from a recent Iwata asks: In Nintendo's past history, (Hiroshi) Yamauchi-san has said, "The hardware is just a box you buy only because you want to play Mario games." Those were his exact words. I think that should apply to the way Nintendo develops hardware except take out "Mario" and just consider it games in general. If more powerful hardware is what Nintendo needs in order to bring in more and better games from 3rd parties, that's what they should do. It's just a box to play games on. Nintendo stands to make more money from stronger 3rd party support than they would on marking up hardware.

2D Metroid by WayForward Technologies. Partly because they're an awesome development team that could do even greater things with a budget larger than whatever is in John Beck and Matt Bozon's pockets at the time and a strong IP like Metroid.... but also because I want Metroid far away from Sakamoto. Won't happen but a girl can dream....

I'd just assume they'd throw the NGP chipset in there and call it a day. It'd probably be cheaper that way.

Nintendo doesn't typically acquire other companies. I believe the last company Nintendo invested in was Monolith Soft a few years ago when they took some 80% from Namco. Most acquisitions often means just buying patents and properties since there's a chance some/most of the talent peace out or get laid off following any kind of buyout. In Nintendo's case, they don't really need any other company's IPs since they have the strongest, most recognizable stable of characters in the industry. Nintendo had a chance at buying Sega some 10 years ago and they passed. Smash Bros. with Sega characters would have been the shizzle, but Nintendo would have had to absorb their debt which was probably the deal breaker there. Nintendo operates mainly on maximizing profit margins. Think about games like Zelda which could be loaded with gorgeous CG and top notch voice acting, but Nintendo never does because they know the game is going to sell millions anyway. That's sound business logic when you think about it. Why spend more when you don't have to? No amount of CG is going to make Zelda sell significantly more no matter how neat-o some people would think it'd be.

Anyway, to answer the question posed in the topic title, it's because of who handheld gaming was/is primarily targeted at. They used to be merely pocket games and nothing more. Then, with the advent of Pokemon, it became something kids brought to playgrounds while the hardcore crowd performed fatalities and headshots. With DS, your mom was doing math problems and your little sister was cooking virtual meals or petting a Nintendog. However, there was always the subset of gamers who considered handheld gaming as just another console and that's the market that Sony is trying to cater to and Nintendo is finally admitting exists (outside of the Nintendo faithful who will buy anything with Zelda or Mario on it) by actively going after 3rd party support. It's really not worth less. That was just the stigma handheld gaming gained based on who was primarily playing handheld games. I know I'm willing and have paid $40 to $50 for a portable game. If I think it's worth it, I'll spend the money.

Movies & TV / Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
« on: February 13, 2011, 11:15:21 PM »
It had nothing to do with the Mexican-ness of the movie. In fact, I stated in my last post exactly why I thought the movie was merely okay. As an action movie, it's not that great. I tend to enjoy movies more based on my expectations of them. I thought the action scenes were generally weaker than what Robert Rodriguez has done before. They weren't terribly inventive. This is the same guy that gave Johnny Depp a fake 3rd arm and had him kill 2 guys.... without eyes.

Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut
I actually liked the theatrical cut for what it was. This version is significantly better because they reinserted very extremely minor things like character development, motives and exposition. Eva Green's character, Sybilla, actually made sense with her added scenes. Same with Liam Neeson's character, Godfrey, who was in the original for roughly 5 minutes. At the same time, the movie is now like 3 hours long. I won't be watching this again for a while.

Machete
It was okay, not Robert Rodriguez's best by a long shot.  I remember someone here saying that this was the movie I was looking for if I wanted pure screen mayhem after my disappointment with The Expendables. Yes and no. It was more absurd than The Expendables but still lacking. The first scene was the best one of the movie which was a shame. The last fight was a total let down. As hot as Jessica Alba is, she's still a terribly actress. I'm glad Danny Trejo finally got a starring role though. He's one of those "movie guys" who just pops up in tons of films for usually small or bit parts so it's nice to see him headlining a movie.

Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire
Phenomenal acting, especially by Mo'Nique. I never thought I'd say that. She was a comedienne I didn't think was funny in the slightest and starred in movies like Phat Girlz (think about the spelling of that title for more than 7 seconds and you won't remember the next 2 days) and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, but she totally killed it in this movie. She won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this. I don't know or care who else was nominated.

Anyway, I had 2 problems with this movie though the filmmakers are only really responsible for one. First, this novel "Push" by Sapphire should have been renamed "Kill Yourself: Based on One of the Most Depressing Novels Ever Written." Claireece Precious Jones begins the film 16 years old, illiterate, physically and verbally abused by her mother, parent to a child with Down's Syndrome, preggo with a second child... oh, and her father raped repeatedly since she was 3 and is the father of her 2 children. Also, the filmmakers cut out the part in the novel where Claireece's mother forces Claireece to give her oral sex. Apparently, that was deemed too much. What. The. ****.

Second, there's too much voice over. I got the feeling that screenwriter Geoffrey S. Fletcher just couldn't let go of some of Sapphire's best lines which work in prose but felt forced in the film. They're nicely written lines. However, voice over does make the movie suffer. Not all movies with voice over narration suffer from it. Or maybe they just need to be narrated by Morgan Freeman in order to work. That's a joke though honestly, I thought it worked in Shawshank Redemption and Million Dollar Baby.

Overall, I liked it. Probably won't ever watch it again, but I'd recommend seeing it once.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
I liked it. Pretty funny and the fight scenes were cool. I loved all the videogame references. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is totally hot. I was surprised that Nintendo let them use some Zelda sound effects/music considering they recently cockblocked the Justin Beiber movie from using the Mario theme. I guess that makes sense. Scott Pilgrim is a pretty decent film for what it was while Justin Beiber is a total abortion of pop culture and America's taste in music. Anyway, Michael Cera plays every character exactly the same way: as Michael Cera. Even if he was told to be something entirely different, he'd still play the role as nervous, socially awkward and mumbly Michael Cera. To his credit, it worked in this movie.

These Girls
It starred Caroline Dhavernas. She was the lead in my favorite show of all time, Wonderfalls. This movie wasn't terrible, but not great. Also had very heavy voice over narration and it didn't work here. Show don't tell. Things that should be given and shown through dialogue or action is just plainly told. Bah. That's the first thing they teach you in any writing class. This movie was also made in Canada so we can just blame it on that.

Really? I stand corrected again. I just remember getting the GBC as a gift with Zelda DX for my birthday so I must have assumed it was a launch or near launch game.
I just checked wikipedia. In North America, GBC came out on November 18, 1998. Link's Awakening DX came out December 1, 1998. Launch window, close enough. On a side note, I was so pissed when GBC was announced at E3. I had just bought a Gameboy Pocket that February. C-c-c-combo breaker.

Even the PS3 ports could use lots of compression and get the size down. Games will be really expensive if they need to shop on 4 or 8GB cards. PS3 games cost $60 already and that is with a disc that cost $1. How much do you think NGP games will cost putting the same game on a extra proprietary card that cost $5-$10 each?
Probably $50-$60 depending on what the MSRP for NGP games ends up being. I don't think the storage format is going to change anything price wise. Besides a few exceptions (I distinctly remember Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire being $80 at one point and my mom, understandably appalled beyond belief in hindsight, refusing to buy it for me), most N64 games were $50, the same as most PS1 games, despite the price disparity between cartridges and CDs which was something like $20 vs. $1 respectively. Additionally, not all games are created equal but, for the most part, they all sell for the same MSRP. They aren't sold on perceived worth though, to be fair, how impossible would that be to determine? That's why standard suggested retail prices exist.

I mean, what the hell? Why put it there if you're just going to pull it out later on anyway?
That's what she said.

Seriously though, I'm not sure Sony or Nintendo planned on pulling features. I don't think they're just fucking with people. It usually makes sense from a business standpoint. I'm not saying it's fair/unfair (let's not go there, please), but clearly there's a reason and I'd assume 9 times out of 10, it's based on profits. Additionally, I wouldn't lump DSi in with PS3 in this case because Nintendo didn't stop selling DS Lite. In fact, you can still buy one today. And unlike Sony, Nintendo didn't retroactively remove features. The option is still there though I suppose, ideally, DSi could have just had a GBA slot and avoided this. Still, I think Nintendo wanted to make a clear distinction between the 2 systems. The main draw for DSi is access to DSiWare. The drawbacks are obviously no GBA support and incompatibility with less than 1% of DS software, basically just Guitar Hero and the random Japan-only slide controller that supported 1.13 games. Those are limitations Nintendo could live with having and obviously didn't mind. Nintendo has to abandon legacy support at some point. No matter when Nintendo does it, someone somewhere is going to be upset about it.

Anyway, to bring this sort of back on topic, the only thing Nintendo can realistically remove is DS support. I guess that's still a possibility though I'm not sure how DS games work on 3DS, emulation or otherwise. Since I still own a DSi and my brother has my old DS Lite and I plan on selling neither, I wouldn't be too heartbroken if Nintendo lamely removed DS support in a future 3DS model. Not ideal because I like the perceived value of backwards compatibility that I probably wouldn't take advantage of ever, but it wouldn't affect my decision to buy a revision. Given the choice, I'd buy the revision if it improves upon the current hardware even at the expense of previous hardware support.

I can wait for a revision, but if some really awesome games come out, I may reconsider. Currently, the only game I care about on 3DS is Resident Evil Revelations. 2D Metroid or a NSMB based on SMB3 could convince me otherwise.

Anyone have an opinion of the Atrix? It looks pretty sweet from what specs I can gather and it's moderately priced when subsidized (a buck fifty).
About the only fun thing I can do at work is browse tech websites since IT hasn't blocked most of the big ones. I read about phones all the time though I'm no expert. The Atrix got a lot of buzz at CES, mostly because it can dock to a computer or laptop shell. That's cool and all, but maybe a little ahead of its time. I'd probably never use any of that, but that's probably the direction we're heading in. Phones need faster processors and faster memory and an OS that's specifically built for that. The Motorola Atrix 4G oddly runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) which came out mid-2010. Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) came out in recently so I find it strange that a major brand new yet to be released phone, especially one boasting a dual-core Tegra 2, would be running an older version of Android. I think Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) is coming within the next few months. Hopefully, Atrix ships with Android 2.3.

Sword of Mana might be the only pre-DS/PSP handheld game I wanted but missed out on (Star Ocean: Second Evolution is currently impossible to find in stores around me). I don't know what happened there either. Maybe the original GBC Shantae too, but with Risky's Revenge, I don't feel too bad about missing the GBC one. I was more retroactively upset for missing out because I didn't hear about it until years after when a GBA sequel was almost going to happen then didn't.

I had my chance at getting Golden Sun: The Lost Age last year for like $5 and I passed on it. I liked the first one, just not enough to play through the sequel.

Kirby's Epic Yarn sure did look nice, but it was hardly a Kirby game. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I wish Nintendo would use these radical art departures (i.e. Epic Yarn, The Wind Waker) and just make completely new IPs without the confines and expectations of the series the art styles end up assigned to. This new Kirby game looks great.

I'm curious to hear more info on Pandora's Tower. The character design looks anime-ish. I'm digging the music.

I was playing with my DSi the other day and I really like the form factor. It's simple, minimalistic, and the matte finish is a much better choice than the glossy outer shell of the DS Lite. There's really no way to make the DSi any more compact than it already is. Besides potentially cutting some depth (the space above the top screen and below the bottoms screen), the 3DS is pretty compact. I'm not sure a Lite version is even necessary. If anything, I think a revision similar to the backlit GBA is more likely where it looks the same aesthetically but some of the insides have been changed for the better. Obviously, with time, the chipset can be made smaller and more energy efficient and with that extra space a larger battery could even be put in, further improving battery life.

Additionally (and less likely), Nintendo could skip the Lite stage and go right for a DSi-esque revision with bumped up specs. In my little dream world, I would hope for larger higher-res screens with the extra RAM and processing power used to take advantage of said screens instead of just larger screens at the same resolution like DSi and DSi XL. I'm not suggesting 3DSi (for lack of a better name) specific titles. Rather, games could run a 3DSi-mode for sharper visuals. Better screens would also call for better camera and a larger form factor would allow for a much large battery. This could also bridge a graphics disparity between 3DS and NGP. Wishful thinking, but it's fun to think about. I would totally buy this version, no question.

If you asked anyone in 2004 if there would ever be a bigger name in portable gaming than Gameboy, you'd hear "No" every time. Nintendo branded their so-called third pillar "DS" to preserve the Gameboy name had DS failed to catch on. I doubt Nintendo even knew what they had on their hands. DS ended up being the next Gameboy AND something completely its own.
