“Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”
― Benjamin FranklinBefore we begin i would like to make two statements,
firstly that i do not want any form of disrespect from either side. i ask that the moderators do not prematurely close this thread and that regular posters do not try to badmouth the moderators. diplomacy is a delicate situation
and second, that the goal of this thread is to brainstorm solutions to this problem that will meet the approval of both sides. this is a form of diplomacy.
the mods do not want a repeat of the Tlon/SUPER mess
And we don't want to lose our ability to edit posts.
i propose a certain comprimise in this area...
this gane looks very interesting
if a user merely wishes to fix a typo then this could be handled by a system which tracks how much the post can be edited. the previous post has 28 characters, i wish to edit one of them because while i was typing my finger slipped on to the wrong key. if a user wishes to make a small edit like that they should not encounter any problems.
this game looks very interesting
however perhaps a user wishes to expand on a post of theirs... for example
this game looks very interesting. i am not quite sure if i will pick it up yet but if everything shapes up well it will be a day one purchase
this could be handled by a system in which after a certain threshold has been reached of how much a post has been changed it would be placed under the scrutiny of moderators, using a system similar to the warning level system already seen on the site in the forum rules.
At level 1(default) a post that is edited to a certain threshold(such as a character limit or precentage of a post that has been edited) will be placed on a watched list. This means that every post they make will be under the scrutiny of all moderators.
At Level 2 any post that has been edited by a user must be approved by a moderator before it becomes visible on the site. Any user who has misused their ability to edit posts or has been placed on a 25 precent warning level will be automatically placed here.
At level 3 a user will be unable to edit posts altogether. this user has been deemed unable to be trusted with the responsibility of editing a post in any way whatsoever.
now theoretically a user could modify a post multiple times one character at a time in order to allow them to change the post to something less pleasant to the conversation. i could edit my post 11 times(one character each) in order to get this:
this FREE SUPER game looks very interesting
this could be handled by limiting the number of times a post can be edited.
so what do you guys think, is this feasible on the moderation side, is this acceptable to other posters? please leave any comments you have
@megabyte, in response to your closing post in the last thread, yes it is
1. there is no way to know how the forums react to a statement until you have made it.
2. tell that to the several talkback threads where one of the first posts is somebody pointing out a typo in the article. as a fellow journalist,(yes i am in the School Newspaper and I am a better writer then I am a poster) and especially with your job as an editor you must realize that sometimes people make mistakes and that they don't see them until they are pointed out to them. sometimes a person may after posting something think "oh i should have elaborated on this point or said more about that"
With that in mind I wish to enter a open and RESPECTFUL dialogue.
