Hopefully the hackers will take advantage of this so SONY doesn't have to waste so much time giving away our personal  info.

Ceric - If you build it, they will come.

But seriously, there will be people (especially university and research groups) that would latch on to this in a second. For example, the LHC has a network of computers around the globe to deal with the data that is made during collisions. With technology like this, that transfer of data would be less tedious.

Yeah, but I think the first real use for this type of tech are the major backbones.  The whole internet be faster in general if the main backbone fiber was upgraded.

Flexible paper phone wasn't that intriguing. Maybe when they figure out how to put a battery in it while retaining flexibilty, then I'll be more impressed.

As for flexible E-ink displays, I have been wondering what is taking so long. Ever since I first looked at it and understood the underlying technology, I guessed that it wouldn't be that hard to make into a flexible product. Now I wonder how companies will make it practical.

its kinda amazing that in the near future...we wont have to worry about batteries....it will be like MAGIC

windup generators, sound operated generators, radio wave powered generators. Maybe they'll make smarter hydro electric plants that don't require such huge dams?

This type of thing make me think how it must of been when the self-winding watch came out.

well as it turns out spring technology is still really viable. I was thinking about building a spring powered generator about the size of a water dispenser....if it was made right a minute spent on winding could give you like 4 hours of electricity. The other design i had in mind was wider...about the size of a widescreen tv. Springs have a lot of power, your turning potential energy into kinetic energy. Not only that you can take advantage of gravity and mechanical advantage and well...easy power.

To be honest I can think of reference to similar tech in older Batman cartoons and like so its been on peoples mind.

@ThePerm-  Interesting about the Spring generator I like to see that.

Foldable AMOLED screen!
http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-05-foldable-crease.html
Quote
As the researchers explain in their study, which is published in a recent issue ofApplied Physics Letters, recently there has been a great deal of interest in flexible, extendable displays. Most of these flexible displays are bendable or rollable. Fabricating a display that can fold completely in half would have the advantage of providing a large screen in a small, portable form, but so far it has been a challenge to eliminate the visible crease between panels.

In the new study, the researchers have overcome this problem, demonstrating a seamless foldable active matrix organic-light-emitting-diode (AMOLED) display with no visible crease. The display consists of two AMOLED panels, silicone rubber (a hyperelastic material), a protective glass cover, and a module case. The display has a very small folding radius of just 1 mm, so that one panel lies almost completely on top of the other when the display is folded at a 180° angle. Also, the glass cover not only prevents scratches, but can serve as a touch screen, as well.

Okay, so the screen itself isn't foldable, but this is still awesome. I could especially see something like this being useful for a 3DSi or whatever.

Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

That's amazing. It's only a little slow to react because of software.

Man...I can't stop thinking about it and discussing it with friends, but 20 years from now, we are going to live in a completely different world.
