Then why not just have a Eshop only release? It mitigates the much-feared "publishing risk", has low visibility hence avoids damages to the precious NoA image, and nonetheless provides a way for people who want it to get it. Problem solved. To be honest, I don't really care about this game (I'm sad the one who brought us the two great modern Ninja Gaiden games seems to have failed this time though); I just don't see Nintendo has anything to lose to give it a digital only release.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Official Sales Thread

Interesting to see that sales number split between the 2 versions; I myself will still go with the conquest version but according to some Japanese gaming friends of mine the conquest storyline is the weaker of the two. They said at the time you were asked to choose path, there is really little reason for you to side with the Black Kingdom in which the story afterwards just doesn’t “feel right”. If that is true it surely is disappointing.
That aside, I too find the “hope it bombs” mentality mind-boggling. The hostility towards this game seems to be mainly associated with 2 issues. The main one is of course the two-version thing, and I have to say the unfair/incorrect/misleading analogy to Pokémon is really stirring a great deal of uninformed hate. No one is forcing anyone to buy both versions, remember? If you don’t find the two versions different enough, why not just buy one? You don’t lose much in that case. If you consider the two versions to be different enough and you really must experience both, you buy the DLC for the other path and you basically pay for about 1.5 games and get 2. Both versions can get everything the other version has by DLC (again, if you feel the need to), there’s absolutely no practical reason to “get tricked by Nintendo/IS and pay $40 * 2”. It is NOTHING like Pokémon. Don’t get me wrong, I myself don’t like the two-version strategy either; I’m just saying it doesn’t deserve that much hate as it is not an unfair value proposition in any case.
Then there are also the overly amine and otaku (which is by the way, started by Awakening) features and content. I too dislike them but as long as they are kept optional or do not affect game play, I’m going to ignore them like they don’t even exist. I just don’t see the “I don’t like the direction this franchise is heading” as a reason to hope FE Fates to bomb. The bottom line is: don’t like the game? Don’t buy it. There is no need to hope it bomb so that the 300k or so people who are actually willing to buy it don’t get to enjoy it.
That said, I will now present you what you actually should be angry or sad upon. Firstly, as more info emerges, it is getting clearer that the 3rd path DLC is likely going to be what I feared, the “best ending” where you don’t have to make the “difficult choice” of which of 2 camps to slaughter, but rather, unite them to fight the “true evil”, making the 2 existing paths pretty much pointless story-wise. Great.
Secondly, to me, great sales number for Fates spells death for any future console installments of the franchise. I have played every single entry of the FE franchise and I love all of them. However, I have to say the console installments generally have way higher production values than the handheld counterparts; it will be sad to see them go because they have way lower sales. I still won’t hope FE Fates to bomb just because of this though.

I totally get the point of releasing all their family-friendly games during the holiday season; I just find it outright stupid for them to not release anything in the summer.  Most of their 2nd-tier to niche games are perfectly fine to be released in the summer, pushing these titles to the holiday season isn’t going to do them any good, in fact, I think that is actually doing them a disservice as they got massacred by all the other mulch-million sellers then. :(
