I have 37, so I guess I'm bringing it up a bit.

EDIT: Actually, that's just counting the digital ones, so with the few physical cards I have left it's over 40.

Another point about handhelds is that the 3DS had already had several different models release, and so it is much more likely that people have purchased multiple 3DS systems than it is Wii U systems. This would skew the attach ratio somewhat, making it appear a bit smaller than it would be compared to the actual number of 3DS owners, which is a smaller number than the 3DS overall sales.

I only own four 3DS games so apparently I'm dragging that attach rate down.
No worries, the rest of us make up for your slouching. ;)

Remember, 3DS attach rate will always skew lower because a lot go to kids with just one or two games and they never get another. I run into that a lot with kids who are just given one as a "toy" and either through lack of parental support or personal interest they just set aside the system when they are bored with the game (or lose it at a park).

My personal 3DS attach rate (games / systems owned) is roughly 14. Git gud, rest of the populace.

(Then again, I've owned five members of the 3DS family and have a sixth on the way. So that's really depressing things.)

I own 3 Wii U games and don't even have a Wii U.  I guess I'm helping that attach rate.  I'm guessing it includes bundles as well like the Super Mario 3D World and Nintendoland together system bundle automatically puts 2 games on that system.

I seriously was considering a 3DS before they announced New 3DS and now I ain't getting either one so they likely have others who feel the way I do. I mostly have other priorities right now too but I refuse to buy any DS model right now because there are just too many on the market.

part of it, as I have said countless times, is the thing is too much money for what I value a portable game console at. Even if you take it one by one, I could get a DS and a 2DS for less money than a normal 3DS but then I have to own two consoles. What if I want GBA games too then I have to own a 3DS and a GBA more money more hassle. Even putting that aside, until recently I was on a very tight budget so I had to prioritize my purchases. On top of that, as stated before, I am not a fan of portable consoles I HATE the tiny screens and if I want a larger screen on 3DS, I have to pay more money for it. The big deterrent for me, this is me any maybe others who think like me but mostly just me, is the price and the screen. Also the games might be good but I haven't owned a portable console since 2007 and I have no interest rushing out to get another one just to strain my eyes playing a game that could have released on the home console or in many cases is available on my laptop or tablet anyways.

Also the choices, what unit do I get when I do decide to get one, get the XL that was NES styled, the one I wanted, but miss out on New 3DS games or get the New 3DS but buy a charger separately? Its too much for me it should be simpler. With GBA and DS my choices were what color do I want, with GBA it was do I want an SP or a normal, with DS it was do I want a slim or a large not much to decide. With 3DS the options are too much its buyers fatigue so rather than face the headache I opt to avoid the choice altogether. Maybe the rest of the world is starting to get where I am or maybe they have moved on to larger screen tablets that can also plug into a TV, IF New 3DS plugged into a TV I would likely get it without much hesitation. I hate gaming on those tiny screens. Oh but I refuse to buy a machine that doesn't come with an A/C never have never will. So yeah that puts me in a tight spot. From the comments around the web, I am not alone.

Truth be told overcoming all that just to play a few games might be worth it if not for the tablet factor that also offers many of the same games and I have a Wii U so I am not missing too much plus I have some retro stuff on my PC that takes care of the retro stuff and I have Steam which has much of the same games that are on eshop anyways.

It seems you're over thinking things a bit. Let me make it simple: Buy a used 3DSXL and enjoy a top 5 gaming console. And are GBA games really that big of a factor?

I don't have one either.  Nor do I have any plans of ever getting one.  I just don't enjoy playing on handhelds.  That includes phones and tablets.  The only exception to that is Hearthstone on my tablet (and I hardly ever play that one anyway).  If I want to play games I do it on a nice size screen with good audio.

It's a bit odd, I'm pretty diehard on Nintendo, but have no interest in the handhelds.

I had access to, but did not enjoy Genesis or PSX, then everything was the same aside from exclusives, then I didn't like PS2/Xbox exclusives for the most part, then had to cave and get a 360 to stay up with anything, didn't like the big games for the most part, sold 360, bought it again three years later to catch up, didn't like the big games for the most part, sold 360, got strong PC to play 3rd Party stuff, haven't liked the big 3rd Party games for the most part.

Despite not digging most non-Nintendo stuff, and playing games a lot regardless, and there being limited releases outside SNES era and the Wii's dream time, which years encompassed a multitude of exemplary/experimental (sometimes both) games, I still am not down with the handhelds, despite the fact that I know if removed from the platform I would enjoy much of the DS/3DS Nintendo library.

But I will probably never own a 3DS. I actually got a used DS late in its life cycle, and enthusiastically played through a few games, but I was doing it on the subway, which quickly made me feel like a gomer and cut too much into my reading/prep time. And I never touched it at home. Somewhat perversely, I have greatly enjoyed the WiiU's off-screen function in a variety of situations (including plugged in at airport), but I think the screen size crosses some weird internal boundary for me of what I will pay attention to while home/stationary. Small phone/game screens are inherently unpleasant to interact with for me, and I only do stuff on my phone when I am not around a computer screen. And I hate touch typing/lack of buttons, rendering tablets worthless.

I think I'm a weird plinko-ball-person outcome where my tastes have stayed roughly in sync with Nintendo's moves, surviving teenage and college years, and yet I have been and remain a customer for only half (or less) of their business.

all the crap I said is mostly just that me overthinking it, but none of that changes I don't care for tiny screens on mobile games. Make the screen bigger, or give me TV output or no sale period. DS was the last handheld I bought, it was also the first I bought. I had a Super Game Boy and GB Player for the games on those system I wanted. I want the games on the handheld but not the handheld. Which is what frustrates me about the dual business model if every game was released on ONE platform and just scaled accordingly I wouldn't miss out on anything. I seriously hope that is the direction they go if not full on 3rd party which realistically isn't happening anytime soon.

has there been no chatter (aka rumor) about a 3/DS player for the Wii U?

seems like something so simple to do and do get people to keep up with 3DS games even while handheld hardware sales slow down.... I guess that would take away from the upcoming 4DS announcement though. BC is a selling point afterall... even if the Wii U could use the boost now.

How about a "gamepad+" which can play games in 3D? Then you could use that to get 3DS games compatible on the Wii U.

Does Wii U not support 3D on 3D TV? Its competition does so I should assume not right. I agree with BnM a Game Boy player device that plays DS games on Wii U is an obvious choice so likely never going to happen. Seriously who is running this company?

I'm typically a console guy.  The Super GB and GB Player are two of the best purchases I have ever made.  But I really like my 3DS XL.  I had a normal sized DS so I'm thinking the big screen makes a difference for me.  I never really liked the DS much and I think part of it was my general dislike of having to play it on a small screen.

A 3DS player though would be an awesome product.  I don't even care if has 3D since I turn that off 90% of the time anyway.  And the 2DS already exists as a 3DS product without the 3D so it isn't even like the 3DS player would have to support it.  But now they might as well wait for a New 3DS player.

Though how would this work for downloaded games?  The GBA was pretty simple.  Put the cartridge in and you're good.  The 3DS is more complex.  They would need to recreate the OS and let you plug your SD card into it.  And once they do that you figure hackers would immediately look for some way to exploit that.  If I take my game and SD card and put it in another 3DS does it work?

I'm pretty sure it came out at one point that the GameCube was technically capable of outputting 3D, though it was obviously never used, so I'm sure the Wii U can as well.

They would need to recreate the OS and let you plug your SD card into it.

That's essentially what they did for Wii mode already, so they could probably do it with this as well.

I imagine it'd work the same as it does with the 3DS now, where it's tied to the system you set it up with and another one wouldn't be able to read from it.
