Nintendo Gaming / RE: Official Wii Sales Thread

I was considering Heroes of Mana until I discovered single cartridge multiplayer wasn' t possible.  I'm sorry, but I'd prefer a four-player splitscreen version of the game on the Wii or something.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wiimote used during GameCube play

Although everybody would love Wiimote functionality in GameCube games, I think Nintendo's going to make sure they make some more money off of GameCube controllers for a while.

It's funny though, after playing with the Wiimote for so long I now play a game with a normal GamePad and just feel restricted, I wanna play with my Wiimote on every game now!

I really liked someone's rumor about an Alarm Clock channel.  Makes perfect sense to me, and would replace my DS as an alarm clock.

Well, Nintendo states quite clearly that VC games are _not_ transferable. So I wouldn't hold your breath about transferring VC games to any handheld.

They aren't transferrable yet.  All a newer handheld system would need is the same routine the Wii uses to run the Virtual Console executables.

In anycase, my original point was that these Virtual Console files will be used for a long time by Nintendo and shouldn't ever have to be replaced.  You can purchase the Virtual Console games in full confidence that it'll be the very last time you'll purchase that game.  Unless of course your Wii gets fried, but even that may be fixed in the near future if you allow Nintendo to track which games you've purchased so they may be readily available for you to download again if your system is damaged or if you change systems, etc.

The higher resolution and solid framerate for OOT should be a bonus.  I'm also starting to wonder if the next Game Boy system will be able to run most of the VC lineup, so getting a digital copy of the game now isn't much of a hard decision.

Um, about Nintendo's on-line service, why aren't they using GameSpy to host the multiplayer games?  I mean if they've already got the setup and the years of experience, lett'em at it.

I'd deffinitly say F-Zero gets my vote for "most wanted on-line game" from Nintendo, especially if Nintendo were to give it the full work-up.  Weekly tournaments, rank based match-up systems, 30-player races, course designer + downloadable courses, customizable vehicles(As seen in GX), monthly patches, everything.  I'd prefer however if the game were a Pay-To-Play game when competing in the on-line tournmanets or 5 player+ matches, to ensure quality and continued support.  Go ahead and charge me a few bucks(nothing more than $10) or advertise in-game if it means a dozen guys can keep the game on its toes.

You know, I really would love a Wii alarm clock.  The Wiimotes seem to have a really good range, it would be awesome if you could have the Wiimotes wake you up in the morning.

Heheh, I don't know, maybe even have it to where if you have multiple Wiimotes you can have them create a surround sound effect, or each one do different note, etc.

Regarding Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, my siblings and I have had no problem whatsoever with the camera, and actually are quite satisfied with its functionality.  Despite the game's simplistic nature and standard dungeon crawling elements, the "Use any Spell at Any Point" through Wiimote gestures that keeps me interested in the game.  Quite simply, I wouldn't want to play the game with a gamepad and I find it hard to get into other dungeon crawlers without the abillity.  It really adds some depth.

Trying to get ahold of the console essentially IS Fight Night for the Wii.

Hahahah.

MaryJane, I'd suggest you check the news paper early Sunday morning to see if anybody's advertising the Wii and then just try to get to the store as early as you can before it opens, if you're lucky, you'll be the 39th or so in line.  I had absolutely no luck at all calling stores to check on shipments, but maybe demand has decreased since I was looking for the Wii.

This sounds really great, I've been quite annoyed by the wrist strap's innabillity to stay tight and have opted to keep the wrist strap off while I'm not standing up.

I haven't ordered my replacement wrist straps yet, where can I find the link to get them?

I'd really really love to see a Wii-exclusive Gradius game, even if it were VC-only.

It would also be great if the paid homage to their first Nintendo-released Gradius game "Life-Force" by developing the game's controls to use the Wiimote "NES-style", while adding in further controls through motion gestures to result in different game effects like using super weapons, rewinding, etc.

Can't wait!

I rather enjoyed Dance Dance Recolution: Mario Mix(And still do, almost a year after purchasing it) and am very excited to see not only that Konami is developing a quality Dance Dance game for the Wii, but adding exclusive Wiimote controls to boot!

Yet another surprise announcement for me, and another hole in my pocket book!

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo online argument
« on: February 02, 2007, 04:33:20 AM »
Hm... I thought I recall Nintendo's research showing that most casual gamers and newcomers alike are often intimidated by playing an on-line game thanks to rude and unsportmanship-like messages from their opponents.  On the other hand, casual gamers have no problem being told how bad they suck by their own friends, hence the friend codes.  I must have missed the part where they were speaking specifically about protecting children, which seems to be the most common argument against Nintendo's friend-code system.

Something that may be an interesting fix for the casual gamers is to force a player to go through a "Party Mode" when playing on-line against unknown players.  The Party Mode would require a player to bring a few friends with him into the on-line game during his first X.xx hours, thereby boosting the confidence of the casual gamer through strength in numbers.  After a few sessions, the casual player should no longer be considered a "newbie" and will be free to play alone, if he desires.  Alternatively, if the player chooses to bypass the "Party Mode" and simply "Go it Alone"(A hardcore gamer's choice), he'll be given a brief warning about the potential courtesy of other players and a suggestion to "bring some backup".

Geeze, this game's a deffinite buy for me, I've become addicted to motion controls after playing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and after reading that IGN news report and looking at those screenshots, there's no reason why this game shouldn't rock my world.  Real-time destruction on buildings?  Fully-realized Wii motion controls for multiple unique attacks at the same time?  Xbox 1.5-like 16:9 graphics? Wii-Online support?  Oh yeah, it's on my list.

I am utterly impressed by the visuals they're getting the Wii to perform, this'll be a real four-player treat!

Any improvements in performance, etc?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii stronger then the first Xbox ?
« on: January 29, 2007, 02:28:42 PM »
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance deffinitly surpasses the GameCube in graphics, and considering the graphical quality of the Xbox version of X-Men: Legends 2, I'd even go as far as to say that the Wii is 1.5x more powerful than the Xbox.  Mostly in that it can hold a decent framerate while displaying Xbox quality graphics, at wide-screen no less.

Loading times are also much faster than I'd expect on the Xbox.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Original "Wii Ware" Content
« on: January 29, 2007, 03:26:32 AM »
Wulfram 2 is a perfect example of an indie game that shouldn't be touched by large publishers.  The game was developed by only four developers back in 1998, and still to this day the gameplay and team strategy on the game is unrivaled.  If a publisher was in the mix as it was being developed, it could have very likely ended up as just another marketing flop and have vanished.  But now through the workings of only one developer in his spare time, the game has developed to have a tight community base and a respect that few other games have received.

What the large publishers offer is a big enough check to insure that the game will meet the latest graphical expectations and have the most recent Unreal 3 engine available, so the developers can spit out just another carbon copy <insert popular game genre>.

But in all honesty, all Original Content games will do is keep real video games alive.  AAA games are slowly moving towards literal interactive movies, and by the next decade, they won't even be in the same boat as games like Mario, Ocarina of Time, and F-Zero.  They'll be less about the controls or your skills and more about the emersion and experience.  So allowing a developer to make a simple puzzler for less than a million dollars, and without the Disney characters being prominent throughout, we could have some decent "Retro" games that could continue to be created.

I'm all for that.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Tips for successful volleying in Wii Sports Tennis?

That's part of the beauty though, you can start the game easily without any idea of the depth, and later on through gameplay catch on to little tricks, etc.

In part though, I must agree, witholding gameplay information seems a little backwards to me. Maybe Nintendo knows something that every other game developer doesn't, who knows.

If it was just a matter of assembling more Wiis they could probably do the ramp up in a week, but for a company like IBM to increase their capacity on Broadway CPUs is going to take a little more time...

Nah, IBM just tore apart all the unsold GameCubes.

Samurai sword swinging may not be possible, but I've been curious as to whether or not fencing could work.

Edit:

I also think that Gladiator sword fighting would certainly work, as long as its truly during the Roman era.  The Gladiuses that were used were small enough to be used more as daggers and weren't terribly great at deflecting strikes from another sword, so a system like Wii Boxing would be very appropriate for a Gladiator-type game(i.e. Jabbing, thrusting, and occasionally a slash or two).  The Nunchuck could be used to raise/lower/bash your shield.  It could work.

The direction you swing the Wiimote really does matter, going from low to high on a swing will give the ball some altitude once its been hit, and just oppositely going from high to low will typically cause the ball to either hit the net, or skim right over its surface.  This it particularly useful when you're the guy close to the net, as it'll allow you to spike the ball right over the net.

The angle of the Wiimote appears to have an effect on the ball's overall direction when its been hit.  Keep the buttons facing up, and the ball will be inclined to go forward.  Tilt the Wiimote clockwise, so the buttons are facing the right, and the ball will fly(quite sharply, depending on your angle) in the opposite direction.  So if you tilt to the right, it'll fly left, tilt to the left, it'll fly right, etc.

Be sure to be swinging in the appropriate direction when the ball has reached you, if you do a left swing while the ball is coming from your left, you're unlikely to get a succesful hit.

I really wish Nintendo had some more four player games like Tennis on Wii Sports, it's been a great deal of fun for me and my siblings.  Good luck!

Direction is controlled by when you hit the ball (just like baseball). When doing a right-handed forehand the earlier the further to the left and the later the further to the right. For a backhand it's reverse. For left handers it's reversed again.

Ahhhh, that makes a lot of sense, I just realized that we typically do backhanded swings.  Thanks Artimus.

Hm, while reading about the internet channel I realized that other news services(including more local ones) could develop their own channels though the Original Content system.

My Dad would love to have a channel devoted to the Drudge Report.
