The movie is based on the comic book and the video game is based on the movie. What will be next? A musical based on the video game?

EMPIRE SIGNS GAMES RIGHTS TO MGM'S ACTION/ADVENTURE BULLETPROOF MONK

Empire Interactive plc, a leading AIM listed computer games developer and publisher, today announced that it has licensed the interactive videogame rights to the eagerly awaited Hollywood action-adventure film, Bulletproof Monk.

Licensed from MGM Interactive, the game will follow the premise of the film, which is based on the comic book first published by Flypaper Press in 1999. The film is being produced by John Woo and Terrance Chang's production company Lion Rock Productions, responsible for the critically acclaimed film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

In Bulletproof Monk, a mysterious monk with no name has zigzagged the globe to protect an ancient scroll - the Scroll of the Ultimate - which holds the key to unlimited power. Now the monk must find a protégé, the scroll's next guardian.

Kar is an unlikely candidate, a streetwise young man whose only interest is himself. But when he saves the Bulletproof Monk from capture, the two become partners in a scheme to save the world from the scroll's most avid pursuer. Together with the help of a sexy and elusive young woman called Bad Girl, they seek out and face the ultimate enemy in a spectacular final battle packed with dazzling effects and action.

The game is being developed by UK-based Mucky Foot Productions, makers of Blade II and Urban Chaos, and is expected to be published by Empire around Christmas 2003 on PC and all Next Generation platforms.

Ian Higgins, CEO of Empire said about the licensing deal, "Empire has shown, once again, that it continues to be at the edge of new concept genre gaming. We are delighted to have won the opportunity to work closely with MGM Interactive on this unique property and believe it will become one of the video game hits of 2003."

"In collaborating with Empire, we continue our strong forward momentum in selecting quality partners to bring our unparalleled film content into the realm of interactive videogames," added Neil Haldar, Vice President of Production and Business Development, MGM Interactive. "We look forward to working together in developing this film title into a variety of compelling and challenging videogames as we continue to make new inroads into this rapidly growing market."

TalkBack / Zelda Pre-Orders Look Strong
« on: February 13, 2003, 04:38:43 AM »
250,000 gamers have already pre-ordered the latest Zelda masterpiece before the official pre-sell program has even started.

A LEGENDARY OFFER: ZELDA CUBED

Eager Consumers Jump Start The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Pre-Sell Program. The wait is almost over.

REDMOND, Wash. - Feb. 13, 2003 - On Feb. 16th, Nintendo of America Inc. kicks off the official pre-sell program for the eagerly awaited Nintendo GameCube game, The Legend of Zelda®: The Wind Waker®.

Designed with the overwhelming interest of gamers in mind, zealots of Zelda get a double-dose of their favorite franchise to keep them busy until the March 24th launch of the new Zelda adventure. With a deposit at any participating retailer, consumers receive a limited-edition disk featuring two playable, full-length games originally for the Nintendo® 64: the award-winning The Legend of Zelda®: Ocarina of Time®(a) and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest - an updated version of the game never released outside of Japan. Consumers get all three games for a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $49.95, while supplies last.

Already, more than 250,000 gamers have reserved their copy of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker before the official pre-sell program has even started.

"This truly is Zelda cubed! Two impressive Zelda games, leading to the highly anticipated new Zelda adventure, for the price of one and only for Nintendo GameCube," says George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America Inc. "What better way to celebrate the forthcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker than to give Zelda fans a collectors item that will provide a nostalgic or for some, a classic introduction to the series."

The latest in The Legend of Zelda® series is an epic adventure that will have the character Link sailing the high seas and searching for clues to his sister's mysterious disappearance. The game is brought to life with incredible toon-shaded visuals and a unique facial animation system. Link's eyes not only show his emotions, but also provide hints and spot danger, inspiring a sense of wonder in players of all ages. Using the Wind Waker, Link learns to compose songs that control wind patterns and even summon cyclones. Connect the Game Boy® Advance, via the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance cable, and players can summon the mapmaker Tingle to uncover hidden secrets to help Link in his voyage.

TalkBack / Infogrames Announces V-Rally 3 for GC
« on: January 24, 2003, 04:46:55 AM »
An updated version of the PS2 hit will be out in June. Bring on the dirt!

THE ULTIMATE RALLY EXPERIENCE ACCELERATES ONTO THE NINTENDO GAMECUBE

Race across desserts, tear up tracks and weave through forests to become the un-disputed V-Rally 3 Champion

London, January 2003 - Infogrames, a leading global publisher of interactive entertainment software, is proud to announce that its hugely successful V-Rally franchise is hitting the Nintendo Gamecube system. Following on from the unprecedented success of the PlayStation 2 version and the impending release of the Xbox version, V-Rally 3 on Gamecube will hit the streets in June 2003.

Utilising the unique technological architecture of the Gamecube, Eden Studios have produced two real innovations to make V-Rally 3 on the Gamecube, a much different and refined experience than that of its PlayStation 2 counterpart. The V-Rally 3 Gamecube dynamics have been improved to produce more sensitive and responsive handling; easier, yet still simulation-oriented and complete with official steering wheel compatibility.

Eden Studios have totally overhauled and refined the in-game special effects. "It was inevitable that V-Rally 3 would release on the Gamecube as it was a logical stage of progression for the franchise. V-Rally 3 has its own distinctive identity and is a great way to introduce this legendary racing brand onto the Gamecube console." said Pascale Vermeerbergen, European Marketing Director.

In addition to these major improvements, further new features appear on the Gamecube version: the Ford Focus livery has been updated, and tracks have been widened and improved for a superior driving and racing experience.

Combined with the exceptional handling developed by Eden Studios and the addition of realistic vehicle sound affects, V-Rally 3 is poised to storm the charts with this sleek looking Gamecube version.

TalkBack / Samus Gets Ready for European Launch
« on: January 24, 2003, 04:23:43 AM »
PAL gamers only have to hold on for two more months...

SAMUS IS BACK!

21st March... 2003... Exclusively on Nintendo GameCube... A True Gaming Legend Returns!

Nintendo and Retro Studios have combined their creative genius to bring the video game event of the year, the long awaited release of Metroid Prime, exclusive to Nintendo GameCube. 21st March marks the European launch of this blockbuster title, and the return of Samus Aran, the ice-cool bounty hunter who'll once again lock horns will the evil Space Pirates. Metroid Prime has already received outstanding reviews in the US, selling a staggering 250,000 copies within one week of its release. Early reviews of Metroid Prime indicate it is set to take Europe by storm and live up to its billing as one of the best games of all time. A tall order indeed, but with the legendary status of its predecessors, each one somehow building on and bettering the last, there is every reason to believe that Metroid Prime will do exactly that!

Super Metroid on SNES saw Samus Aran saving the day as she prevented the evil Space Pirates and Moether Brian from letting the Metroids loose on Planet Zebes. Now, 8 years later, Metroid can be experienced like never before, in glorious, full 3D with all the action taking place from an amazing 1st-person perspective. Players actually get to step inside the famous power suit and experience the game through Samus' eyes, as though they are the great bounty hunter herself! This viewing perspective not only revolutionises the look of the game in a way never thought possible, but it is also essential to the gameplay.

Players can explore and examine the vast environments down to the smallest detail with the scanning ability of Samus' face visor. The visor also helps to target and lock onto enemies allowing for laser-point accuracy in the heat of fierce alien battles. With Samus' vitals such as health, ammo levels, map and weapons selections all displayed on the inside of her visor, the player never need remove themselves from the gameplay, making Metroid Prime one of the most immersive gaming experiences ever!

Atmosphere has always been a key feature of the Metroid series and Metroid Prime doesn't disappoint. Samus finds herself on the lonely world of Tallon IV tracing what she suspects to be Space Pirate activity. This takes her from the lush Tallon overworld to the ancient Chozo Ruins, snow-covered Phendrana Drifts and the lava-filled Magmoor Caverns. Each incredible environment is filled with unique enemies and obstacles. This not only helps to differentiate between sections, but it provides a rich and varied experience. In terms of audio, Metroid Prime is second to none. Supporting a full Dolby Pro-Logic II soundtrack, each environment is perforated with atmospheric sound effects and an eerie musical score.

The name of the game in Metroid Prime is survival! Throughout the course of her exploits on Tallon IV, Samus will have to search for numerous weaponry upgrades, in order to progress and also to tackle certain enemies. These include Super Missiles, Ice Beam, Thermal Visor, Flamethrower, Space Jump Boots and many more. The beauty of Metroid Prime is the constant discovery of new items and weapons that will allow players go back and overcome previously impassable sections.

Metroid just wouldn't be Metroid without the inclusion of Samus' incredible ability to roll herself into a small ball, the Morph Ball, and squeeze through the unlikeliest of spaces. To accomplish this, the game seamlessly leaves the normal 1st-person perspective and players take control of the Morph Ball directly from a 3rd-person perspective. This smooth and effortless transition not only looks and feels amazing, but is one of the many key features that sets Metroid Prime a cut above the rest in terms of presentation, control and above all gameplay.

And that's not all. For the first time, two of Nintendo's Metroid titles will connect. By completing Metroid Fusion for Game Boy Advance and Metroid Prime on NINTENDO GAMECUBE, then linking them together via the NINTENDO GAMECUBE Game Boy Advance link cable, gamers will be able to open two features:

1. By completing Metroid Prime, gamers can link to Metroid Fusion and play Metroid Prime again, this time with Samus wearing a new suit from Metroid Fusion.

2. By completing Metroid Fusion and then linking to Metroid Prime, gamers can unlock the original Metroid from the NES and play this on their NINTENDO GAMECUBE

As one of the key must-play games on the NINTENDO GAMECUBE, Metroid Prime is set to join over 100 superb titles already available on the console. So start 2003 as you mean to go on, with some serious action, adventure and excitement - Samus is coming...

Metroid Prime is exclusive to the NINTENDO GAMECUBE and launches on March 21st at an estimated retail price of around 60 euros.

Part of the reason is the strong performance of WWE Smackdown and, ahem, SpongeBob SquarePants.

THQ #2 INDEPENDENT VIDEOGAME PUBLISHER IN DECEMBER

WWE Smackdown! Shut Your Mouth and SpongeBob SquarePants Games Power Results

CALABASAS HILLS, Calif., — January 21, 2002 — THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced that it achieved the #2 independent videogame publisher ranking for the month of December 2002 according to NPD's TRSTS Video Games Survey. Capturing a 7.3% market share, THQ was ranked the third publisher overall trailing only Nintendo and Electronic Arts.

"December results indicate that the market for video games is expanding to the mass market with the success of brands like SpongeBob SquarePants," said Brian Farrell, president and CEO, THQ. "We believe the mass market audience will continue to grow in 2003, further fueled by widely anticipated hardware price reductions in the spring."

Alison Locke, executive vice president of North American publishing, THQ, added, "THQ is well positioned to gain market share through the current videogame cycle with our portfolio of mass market brands like Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo; Scooby-Doo!TM; Tak and the Power of JuJuTM and the rest of our extensive Nickelodeon line-up; as well as releases targeting the enthusiast audience, including Alter EchoTM, SplashDownTM 2 and games based on World Wrestling Entertainment."

The company also continues to hold the #1 independent publisher position on Nintendo's handheld systems. TalkBack / Samus Goes Snowboarding
« on: January 17, 2003, 04:33:12 AM »
Nintendo is sponsoring a European snowboarding event as well as MTV Winterjam.

NINTENDO SPONSORS MTV WINTERJAM AND THE BURTON EUROPEAN OPEN

NINTENDO GAMECUBE and Metroid Prime take to the slopes this winter, riding on the best snowboards and listening to some great music

Pull on your snow boots - Nintendo are pleased to announce two major European event sponsorship deals this winter. NINTENDO GAMECUBE is the main sponsor of the Burton European Open on 18-25 Jan 2003 and sponsor of the MTV Winterjam Burton European Open closing party on 24 Jan, all of which are happening in Livigno, Italy. In addition NINTENDO GAME CUBE & Metroid Prime are sponsors of MTV Europe's main winter event, MTV Winterjam 2003, confirmed to take place in Davos, Switzerland on March 14.

Part of Nintendo's sponsorship of the Burton European Open is a huge NINTENDO GAMECUBE obstacle on the Night Shoot Out course, a contest held in the centre of Livigno itself on the night of the 24th. Riders will grind off the edge of the oversized GameCube, and Nintendo have put up prize money of €2,000 for the best trick using the obstacle.

The Burton European Open attracts the cream of boarders from around the globe. The arrivals lounge will be awash with flight-bagged snowboards as over 350 contenders land from all across Europe, the USA, Canada and even Japan. Names to look out for include the legendary Terje Haakonsen and up & coming stars Jussi Oksanen and Romain Di Marchi, plus the gorgeous Mel Leando of our very own Game Boy Advance Xtreme Team.

The Nintendo sponsored MTV Winterjam 2003 party is the closing party of the Burton European Open, and live open air music from J-Walk and the selections of DJ's Rob Mac & Matt Smooth in the Il Cielo club will entertain the assembled throng into the night.

MTV Europe's main event of the winter season is MTV Winterjam 2003, set to take place in Davos, Switzerland on March 14, and once again Nintendo will be there to watch the spectacle unfold, this time with Metroid heroine Samus in tow. The outstanding Metroid Prime for NINTENDO GAMECUBE launches across Europe on March 21, and Nintendo are taking the opportunity of MTV Winterjam and its stunning alpine setting to introduce people to Samus and her foes in a way they won't forget. The game will be projected onto an ice wall for punters to play, and ice sculptures of Samus will gaze down benevolently as the on-screen aliens are blasted to kingdom come.

Rock whoppers Sum 41 and Guano Apes will be performing live in Davos, with a big, noisy serving of 'music with altitude' under the stars. Let's hope Samus likes to rock, but then there's nothing like good music to help break the ice.

According to the ELSPA, UK video games sales reached an all time high in 2002 boosted by  the launches of GameCube and Xbox.

VIDEO GAMES SALES REACHED AN ALL TIME HIGH IN 2002

Latest Figures for Year 2002 from The Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association

Thursday 9th January 2003

ELSPA (The Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association) has announced today that UK sales of leisure software and hardware products reached an all time high in 2002 with values reaching £2,074m, an increase of 8% up on the previous year.

Top Sellers

The market was boosted by launches of several major smash hit games. In 2002, the highest ever number of ELSPA Gold, Platinum and Double Platinum Sales Awards were presented to publishers of games that sold more than 200k, 300k and 600k units respectively, and the first ever Diamond Million Seller Award was presented to Take 2's 'Grand Theft Auto 3', swiftly followed by 'Grand Theft Auto Vice City' which achieved 'Diamond status by reaching one million sales in just seven weeks.

Also taking the Christmas market by storm was Sony's 'The Getaway' (PS2 format). Released only in week 50 of 2002, the title surged through the charts achieving the ELSPA Platinum Sales Award for reaching sales of 300,000 units just two weeks later. Electronic Arts' 'Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers' and 'Fifa 2003' (both PS2 format) were also big Christmas hits; each one reached the Platinum Award level within just seven weeks of release date.

Other popular titles throughout the year included:

Gran Turismo 3, Gran Turismo 2, Pokemon Gold, Metal Gear Solid 2, Tony Hawk's Skateboarding, Championship Manager: Season 00/01, Championship Manager: Season 01/02, Medal of Honour: Frontline

New Consoles Boost the Market

The biggest growth area last year was in sales of console software boosted by the launches of the new Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube consoles. Console software sales increased by 19% compared to PC software, which was down by 5% on 2001 sales.

Roger Bennett

Commenting on these figures, Roger Bennett, Director General of ELSPA said:

"Once again the industry has seen it's most successful year ever. The leisure software market is clearly positioned as the fastest growing and most dynamic entertainment media sector globally. And this is particularly the case in the UK where gaming is now established as the first choice leisure pursuit for so many people of all ages, with the average age game player now being in their mid twenties".

Global Position

According to ELSPA's current Leisure Software Market Report, published by Screen Digest, the UK leisure software market is the third largest country market in the world, after USA and Japan. In the UK, consumers now spend more on leisure software than on renting videos or cinema visits. In terms of exports, the picture is also rosy, with the value of UK exports of leisure software products exceeding both British film and TV. The next market report, which will forecast through to 2006 is due to be published early this year.

TIME-HONORED ZELDA SERIES GETS LEGENDARY PRE-SALE OFFER IN THE UNITED STATES

Consumers Pressure For Pre-Sell Program For Two Hot Zelda Properties

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 17, 2002 –The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is set to launch for Nintendo GameCube on March 24, 2003. But in North America, consumers already are pushing for an early pre-sell effort so they can be guaranteed a copy of the game.

Starting Feb. 16, 2003, Nintendo fans can get a double-hit of Zelda. When a customer places a deposit for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker at a participating retailer, they'll receive a special, limited-edition playable disk featuring two games: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest - an updated version of the game which was never released outside of Japan.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. in Japan introduced a similar pre-sell program last month. Nearly 500 consumers called Nintendo's North American consumer service line asking for the same program here.

"We were surprised consumers tracked the program in Japan and were begging us to do it here," explains Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "We decided it was a great idea and one we know consumers really want.

"The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker game raises the bar on digital entertainment with a unique and technologically advanced graphic style and compelling story," continues MacDougall. "Making this pre-sell program available to the fans, it solidifies Nintendo's commitment to the hardcore gamer, while introducing the series to a whole new generation of gamers."

Originally released for the Nintendo 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was honored as the 1999 Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences "Game of the Year" and also named "Game of the Century" by Next Generation magazine.

To date, worldwide sales of The Legend of Zelda series have surpassed 36 million software units. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker will retail for a suggested price of $49.95.

ALIAS|WAVEFRONT'S MAYA: THE EXCLUSIVE 3D SOFTWARE BEHIND THE LEGEND OF ZELDA LAUNCH ON NINTENDO GAMECUBE

Ninth entry in the highly acclaimed Nintendo series delivers compelling fresh adventures and sets new standards for real-time artistic expression

Toronto, Canada - December 13, 2002 - Alias|WavefrontTM, an SGI (NYSE: SGI) company, today announced that its Maya® software was the exclusive 3D software package used in the development of the highly anticipated Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda®: The Wind WakerTM for Nintendo GameCubeTM, which begins shipping today in Japan. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is the first Nintendo® game in which the 3D graphics were created entirely with Maya.

In early previews, game reviewers around the world were astounded by the graphics quality of Zelda, the latest edition of the game from the team led by Shigeru Miyamoto, Director & General Manager, Entertainment Analysis & Development Div., the genius behind Donkey Kong® and MarioTM. Nintendo GameCube consistently strives forward in console power, which means creating more content, at new levels of quality, within production schedules and team sizes that are the same as in the days of the Nintendo® 64 console.

"We're honored that Nintendo has chosen to work with Alias|Wavefront's Maya 3D tool," said Geoff Foulds, Games Marketing Manager for Alias|Wavefront. "Nintendo ranks among the greatest game developers in the world and having Maya as its exclusive tool is a privilege. The Legend of Zelda and The Power of Maya With its robust architecture, and advanced Application Programming Interface (API) and the Maya Embedded LanguageTM (MEL), Maya delivered significant boosts in productivity.

MEL, combined with the ability of Maya to run in batch mode, automated many of the repetitive tasks and significantly accelerated art production. The Maya API and MEL made it possible to deliver the functionality of the multiple tools that had been necessary in the old production pipeline. "Standardizing on Maya has a further benefit for the development teams - resources could easily be moved from one project to another - reducing bottlenecks and further accelerating production," said Foulds. "Nintendo was able to work with external sites much more easily, not only elsewhere in Japan but around the world."

Remember that insanely addictive arcade game from the 1980's? Well, now you can play a new version with a new 3-D look.

THE ULTIMATE IN SPACE COMBAT-ACTION ARRIVES TO THE XBOX, NINTENDO GAMECUBE AND GAME BOY ADVANCE WITH DEFENDER

Tactical Maneuvers and Strategic Command Equips Gamers to Save the Human Race from Alien Annihilation in the All-New 3-D Remake of the Popular 1980s Arcade Classic

Midway Games Inc., a leading software industry publisher and developer, announced today that Defender®, an all-new 3-D version of the popular 1980s arcade classic, has shipped for the XboxTM video game system from Microsoft and Nintendo GameCubeTM and will ship on Thursday, Nov. 7th for the Game Boy® Advance. Defender is also currently available for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.

Defender offers players the ultimate in next-generation high-octane action with strategic elements that start where the original Defender left off. In this all-new version, players must battle an onslaught of vicious aliens as they assume the controls of next-generation combat-ready Defender ships to strategically pilot through more than 20 challenging missions spanning the solar system. Defender players execute dynamic tactical maneuvers such as barrel rolls, 360-degree loops and spinning reversals to evade the enemy.

"This all-new remake of the Defender classic will impress longtime Defender fans as well as next-generation videogamers," said Helene Sheeler, vice president of marketing, Midway.

To add to the high-octane action, rhythmic sensation KMFDM contributed a track entitled "Defender," a remake of Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra," prominently known as the theme song from the 1968 movie "2001: A Space Odyssey." The band's energetic live shows and sound, which artfully incorporates a lot of explosive, metallic elements into one mix, complements the exciting space combat-action gameplay found in Defender. Black Black Records' Trigger also recorded an original techno song, "Vaunt," for the game. The two-piece combo of Todd Crumn and Janed Todd focus their music on a full, beat-driven sound that aims to conjure a different mood, memory or idea.

In addition, Commander Mei Kyoto, a fledgling Defender pilot, is the voice of renowned actress/singer Traci Elizabeth Lords. Lords is a dynamic performer who has appeared in theatrical films such as "Blade," John Waters' "Cry-Baby" and "Serial Mom," as well as in television series "First Wave," "Melrose Place" and the Stephen King miniseries "The Tommyknockers." Music from her acclaimed techno CD "1000 Fires" has been featured on the soundtracks for "Mortal Kombat®" and "Virtuosity."

Featuring a new view perspective with a fully 3-D, third-person chase camera, Defender drops players into the explosive action of an alien invasion where they must combine strategic elements with speed and control to outwit the enemy. Ship upgrades are also available with various power-ups including shields, advanced weapons and hyperspace technology, which allows players to strategically relocate the ship to one of several predetermined locations to aid in defeating the aliens. Aliens can be taken head-on in single-player campaign mode or defeated with a friend in the two-player, cooperative campaign mode as you deploy an arsenal of weapons such as a grenade launcher, fast-lock missile launcher, fireball launcher and gas launcher.

Defender's DVD content offers a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the game with in-depth interviews featuring project director/designer George Collins and producer Matt Candler discussing their experiences remaking the arcade classic for next-generation consoles. Also included is a narrated history of Defender, from its arcade roots to the present, including an interview with its original creator. Additionally, featured in the DVD are "Coming Soon" trailers for Midway's upcoming titles.

Defender Xbox and Nintendo GameCube Key Features:

* Multiple Game Modes - Single-player campaign mode and two-player (co-op) campaign mode

* A New View Perspective - Defender is fully 3-D and is played from a third-person chase camera perspective. This gives the player the ultimate in speed and control as they pilot their ship to victory against the alien invaders

* Instant Action - The controls in Defender are straightforward, making it intuitive in picking up the game and starting Defender training. Weapons are precise and advanced players can use special tactical maneuvers via button combos such as barrel rolls, reverses, etc.

* Plan Your Attack - The new Defender starts where the old left off. In addition to saving humans and killing aliens, there are tanks and other ground units to position (both defensive and offensive) and bases to defend. Now humans become more than just a body to save - they are a resource to manage

* Ship Upgrades - Upgrade your ship in between missions - receive upgrades for lives saved. During missions, players can earn multiple power-ups including: shields, advanced weapons and hyperspace technology

TalkBack / Nintendo shares drop
« on: October 02, 2002, 12:53:19 AM »
Investors react to Nintendo’s profit revision yesterday.

TOKYO, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Shares in Nintendo Co Ltd, the world's second-largest home videogame maker, took a battering on Wednesday after it trimmed earnings forecasts and its shipment target for game consoles.  Nintendo's shares ended down 6.96 percent at 12,840 yen, underperforming Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei average, which fell 1.23 percent.  The maker of the GameCube home videogame system announced late on Tuesday that it had slashed its recurring profit forecast for April-September by 77 percent due to an appraisal loss on its hefty foreign-currency-based assets.  The rise in the yen against the dollar during the six months reduced group sales by 4.5 billion yen ($36.71 million) and resulted in an appraisal loss of 29 billion yen on foreign-currency-denominated assets, it said.  Recurring profit is pretax and excludes extraordinary items.  Faced with slack demand for its game systems in Japan and Germany, Nintendo also trimmed its 2002/03 shipment target for GameCube by 17 percent and for Game Boy Advance by 21 percent.  The revision prompted sell orders.  Nikko Salomon Smith Barney analyst Soichiro Fukuda downgraded his rating on Nintendo to 3H from 2H and cut its target price to 13,500 yen from 18,200 yen. Nikko's 3H rating corresponds to underperform and high-risk, while 2H is neutral and high-risk.  Eri Sato, an senior analyst at Goldman Sachs, said she was revising her outlook on Nintendo to reflect the company's announcement, but would maintain her view that GameCube will grow in the medium term, taking a bigger global market share than Microsoft Corp's Xbox.  "Shares in Nintendo may come under pressure in the short term, but that would provide a good buying opportunity," she said.  Investor worries over Nintendo's huge appraisal loss on foreign currency-denominated assets due to the yen's strength have weighed on its shares, sending them down by more than 40 percent so far this year.
