From the article:
"presto, loads of old, crappy games are playable on your 3D-capable machine"

I think I speak for every serious gamer when I say "F*CK YOU!"  If they're so crappy why would anyone want to play them on the PSP?

I saw this coming.  Let the massive downloading of illegal mp3s, ROMs, and movies begin to fuel the newest pirate-friendly Sony product.  Aren't they creating memory cards big enough to store whole games?  Heck this way you could pirate just as easy as you could on PS2 and Xbox...an excellent selling point (sarcasim).

This is actually a pretty tempting reason to own a PSP.  Of course, I don't emulate old games nearly as often as I imagined I would when I downloaded my first SNES emulator.  Not even when it is a old game that's "new to me."

How about if he buys his PSP used?

There are much cheaper ways to play old GBC games. Like maybe buying a GBA, or a used GBC.

Of course then you'd have to own the actual carts. But if you didn't own them in the first place, its illegal

Well, you could buy the GBA...and then, while the shopkeep has the game case unlocked, you could sneakily steal all the GBC games you want.

Seriously, though, this is why Nintendo needs to get an itunes-style pay-to-download sevice for their old games.

So, a PSP can easilly play Nintendo property?

I cannot wait to hear Nintendo's lawyers when they finish making their case to serve to Sony.  This reminds me of the Marvel Comics vs. City of Heroes for their "copyright infringement program".  (Which Marvel lost, but still).

Nintendo is so jealously protective of their intellectual property, you'd think they'd fight this one tooth and nail for every penny they can pinch out of Sony.

I doubt Sony can be held liable for this, unless some case can be made that they encouraged development or used it in their advertising.

The best revenge in this case is living well... fire a couple lawyers, hire a couple more DS developers. Momentum is already going our way, there's no more need to sue Sony over the PSP than there is to see Nokia over the N-Gage, or any of the other also-rans in the handheld universe.

Here's an idea: How about a writeable DS cart (or a DS app cart with a writeable GBA Cart) that allows users to go online with their DS and download GB/GBC roms legally through the same service the revolution is using?

As of right now all these emulators only work with a Japanese PSP that's on the original (version 1.0) firmware. I doubt you'll have too easy of a time picking one of those up.

You'll have to pick it up 2nd hand to get a 1.0 cause all have been 1.5 since march

and more emulation on the way

PC-Engine (Turbografix) is up and running and a Neo Geo emu is on the way.

what do you think will be next?

Don't want to make a new (this thread should just be renamed to 'PSP hacked - play games for free!!!')

anyway....

PSP is almost fully hacked as a loader to play ripped UMD games from the memory stick is about to be available.  A group that goes by the name Dynarox has supposedly figured out how to dump games from the UMD and and put them on mem sticks.

Ridge_Racer_USA_PSP-Dynarox
Twisted Metal Head On USA PSP - Dynarox
Lumines_USA_PSP-Dynarox
Gretzky_NHL_2k5_USA_PSP-Dynarox
Smart_Bomb_USA_PSP-Dynarox
Need_For_Speed_Underground_Rivals_JAP_PSP-Dynarox

www.psp-spot.com

Is this another nail in Sony's UMD slot?  never need to purchase another game or movie for PSP again.........

I can see PSP software sales shrinking and shrinking even more. looks like PSP will be a popular media device that Sony sells at a loss  but doesn't sell any software for to make up the difference.
Bad news for Sony

they are losing lots of money on PSP hardware (I don't have an exact figure), I hear its atleast $75 - 125 per system when it launched.

Mem sticks are still too expensive (marked up about 50%), so I don't see UMD ripping as too much of a problem for now, unless you can hook your PSP up to your computer directly.  But they need to sell their software for PSP or its gonna be a dead system as far as developer support goes.

If everyone continues to run movies and emulate older systems off of the mem stick, and now play PSP games from a mem stick, no developer is going to want to spend money making anything for a system that they can't make any money on.

Thats the problem that I see.

Good point.

Anyone can see that happening, especially because it happened to the Dreamcast.

The PSP loses about $25 at its US retail price. It loses a lot more in Japan though, because Japanese PSPs only cost about $190.

But did Dreamcast piracy really scare away third parties? It doesn't seem like there was any less development for it after the discovery of the CD-R audio track trick
