Pokémon + Nobunaga's Ambition Revealed
« on: December 16, 2011, 09:00:53 PM »

The oddest franchise crossover event... EVER?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/28717

The newest Pokémon game is a crossover with Tecmo Koei's Nobunaga's Ambition, Dengeki Online recently revealed.

Pokémon + Nobunaga no Yabō is set to be released for the DS in spring 2012 and will feature characters from both franchises in a tactical RPG setting. Nobunaga's Ambition takes place in ancient Japan where players command various forces to conquer different parts of Japan. How the Pokémon will be used in the field of battle remains unknown at the moment.

A booth for the game was also seen at the Jump Festa event, which also disaplayed the game's first set of screenshots. The Pokémon Company is working closely with Tecmo Koei games in the development of this title.

4gamer has a set of pictures of the booth here. The official site is here.

Confusing but awesome. The only thing which buggers me is, that the young boy with the Eevee (who seems to be the main character) is the future One-Eyed Dragon Masamune Date.

This is silly and ridiculous in a fun way.

I can't shake the odd thought that this crossover might be the moment when Pokemon sells out/jumps the shark  (for the lack of better words). Given how much Pokemon merchandise there is and that some spin-off games have been bad, it is an odd thought indeed. This crossover looks like harmless fun. I hope it will packed with weird but great moments.

I played Nobunga's Ambition on the NES.

I can't see this game ever come stateside. But if it does, I'm buying.

BUT WHY DS AND NOT 3DS?!

I'm curious, of the dozens of spin-offs released over the years, what makes this one different/worse? Not even Pokémon Teaches Typing reached that point? To me it seems like the Pokémon franchise was designed to sell out.

For everyone who thinks I'm incapable of disagreeing with Nintendo... Take note.

W.... T....  Flap?

Is it April 1st already?  I'm glad some folks seem in to it and, by all means, go enjoy... but man oh man.... I couldn't possibly wrap my head around the appeal of such a game.  And this is coming from a guy who has enjoyed both franchises (separately =P ).

Heh, indeed.
The difference that sparked my odd thought is that this is a full character-to-character crossover with another long-running series. This differs from the mystery dungeon games where it was just (from what I understand) Pokemon characters slammed in to the mystery dungeon style. Also, it's a collaboration with the Koei side of Tecmo-Koei, a company that has received some flak for the popular Musou/Warriors series. Of course, this collaboration is with a Koei strategy series and those series are regarded better.

Ah, I'm not making much sense. A full-on series crossover project is such a rare thing for Nintendo to do that it has frazzled me. I just don't know what exactly to make of it! However, I'm curious and eager to see how this game turns out.

Is it April 1st already?

For April 1st this year, I wrote a fake news story about a canceled Pokemon DJ Hero game-that seems postively normal compared to this. Still, it does seem interesting.

What's wrong with a new twist?  Me I love the idea.  I never played any of the Nobunaga's Ambition games but IGN had their review of the PS2 game that game stateside a few years back, basically a very deep game with rich Japanese History so you mix that with something like Pokemon that has more "charm" than story you might actually get something special.

Here's IGN's review of Nobunaga's Ambition Iron Triangle (PS2 2009).

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  Though I hope they go with a real Pokemon region and not do Japan like the actual Nobunga's Ambition games.  Maybe this could tell the story of the Unova's early days when the great dragon was split?

This is two gaming franchises which should not have mixed. Its like Duke Nukem teaming up with Sonic the Hedgehog at the Olympics or something stupid like that.

They are turn-based strategy role-playing games set in feudal Japan and has existed since 1983 (when the first game was released on MSX). I don't know much more than other than what is on Wikipedia.

Are you familiar with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms video games? Nobunaga's Ambition is the same game basically and made by the same company (Koei), with the only difference being instead of set in ancient China, its set in ancient Japan.

ROTTK and Nobunaga's Ambition are both games that let you take control of a tiny kingdom and try to lead it to victory using diplomacy and warfare and so on.

There's an absolutely silly amount of stuff that adapts from the Three Kingdoms period (Sangoku) and Japan's Warring States era (Sengoku). Considering the amount of characters, action, and drama of the history, it's not hard to see why. Kind of makes me wish we saw such adapting from other histories, for better and for worse. Then again, it seems only in Japan and Asia are accepting of weird and/or crazy interpretations of history.

Oh well, doesn't stop western works that are allegories to wars and such from being made.

Koei made other games like that. There was one for the NES called Liberty and Death which covered the American Revolutionary war, for example.
