The GameCube is one funny looking system. Zack examines it along with the controller.
Whenever a new system comes out that I'm interested in, I always get hyped up to purchase it day one. That started with the 3DS and continued with the 3DS XL and Wii U. Plugging in the used GameCube I bought was a much different experience than my usual time buying a gaming system. Instead of opening up a box into the future, I was plugging a cube in to relive the past.
While I did own a PlayStation 2 back in the day along with a a Game Boy Color, I've spent so many years using consoles with multiple features and capabilities, which makes the GameCube seem antiqued for just being gaming system. It feels really good to own something like that. Console manufacturers nowadays divide their attention to other ways to enjoy the system instead of just focusing on games.
The GameCube has quite an odd design. Just having a cube sitting in your room hooked up to a TV looks weird, but what really makes it funny looking is its handle. I'm sorry to anyone who loved the handle, but come on. Why would you need a handle on a game console? Even if you are trying to carry it somewhere, its cube shape makes it easy enough to carry. I guess if you really wanted a system you can hold with one hand it was a good idea, but honestly, all it does is make a good discussion point as to why Nintendo would include a handle to their system.
Nintendo finally gave in to discs with the GameCube, but I still can not get over how weird the discs they used were. Instead of using DVDs, like other systems of the time, the GameCube uses its own proprietary optical discs. Just a bit larger then a Universal Media Disc, the Nintendo optical disc used on the GameCube top loads onto the system. When finding a good place to store your GameCube it can be difficult finding a place where you still have enough room to pop the top in order to put the disc in.

The GameCube controller is an odd looking fellow. Its multicolored buttons are a bit of an eyesore, and altogether is not very pretty. However, I don't judge controllers based off of shallow concepts like looks and colors because it feels great. Playing games using this controller has been a new experience for me. Having played Nintendo consoles with touch screens and motion controls, it feels weird to play a Nintendo game with a "normal" controller. The curvature of the design makes it a comfortable fit in my hands and it feels a lot easier to hold than the N64 controller.
While talking about the hardware is fun, it's the games that really matter. Be sure to come by next week to read my thoughts on Super Mario Sunshine.
