Who Knew Coffee Came from the Warp Zone?

A review of Fangamer's awesome new drinking utensil.

For my birthday present last Boxing Day, my girlfriend ordered me a new coffee mug from Fangamer, a site dedicated to selling cool gaming swag made by fans for fans. Today it finally arrived!

Behold the Pipe Mug, a perfect talking piece for Mario-fanatic-coffee-addicts like myself.

Not quite knowing what to expect as I opened the package, I was greeted by a very stylish gift box. I love the logo made from Mario pipes, adorned with tiny features such as Piranha Plants, brick blocks, and even Mario's fist punching out the top. The top of the box describes the mug as the original Warp Mug.

Inside was a hand-drawn packing slip/gift tag featuring a Mario-Link hybrid being pestered by a Mushroom Navi. Cool stuff. Each order for the Pipe Mug comes with one of several randomized rubber coasters resembling Mario blocks; mine was the green Metal Cap block from Super Mario 64. The coaster is very stylish and fits the design of the mug quite well.

Just one of several you could get!

Onto the mug itself—the quality here is impeccable. It's made from a high-impact ceramic and painted beautifully with an 8-bit pixel style resembling the design of the pipes seen in the original Super Mario Bros. At a capacity of 14 fluid ounces, it's considerably larger than the standard coffee mug size here in Australia—when I first laid eyes on it I thought "that's one big cup of joe!" Not a problem though, the extra hit of caffeine will do me good when I'm up at 3 AM, racing to finish my feature write-ups. The handle matches the style perfectly as well, with smaller pipes sprouting from the side of the main one, complete with elbow-bend plumbing fittings.

I wonder how a Piranha Plant would react to caffeine....

If you would like to own one of these incredible creations, head on over to Fangamer's page and check it out. They also have an assortment of t-shirts and other awesome gaming paraphernalia. If you want to own the complete set of coasters to go with your mug, they also sell those in separate packs (right now they're temporarily sold out, but I'm sure they'll restock those soon).

While you wait for your new merchandise to arrive, take a look at the gallery of photos below, and keep an eye out for more of my gaming related trinket reviews in the near future!

WANT!

This would make the perfect gift for my soon to be 2yo. No? Well I'm sure he won't mind daddy taking care of it for him.  ;D
