What I'm Looking Forward To (Fall 2011)

Kirby Mass Attack

by Neal Ronaghan - August 25, 2011, 1:25 pm EDT

Another touch screen-heavy Kirby game? I'm listening.

Kirby Mass Attack is the kind of game that I'd get strictly on the premise and the people behind it. HAL Labs is making another Kirby game that makes use of the touch screen in some sort of potentially interesting way. I'm on board.

That being said, I despised the E3 2011 demo, which was presented entirely in Japanese. It didn't help that the person demoing the game didn't have any clue what was going on either. Regardless, I walked away from a five-minute session with the game very downtrodden. I didn't care for Kirby Mass Attack at all. However, it was a demo that was entirely in Japanese.

Now, as we're less than a month out from its release and Aaron got some time with it in English, I'm a little more excited. Gone are the negative memories of E3. The gameplay and levels seem to be simple, but filled with devious challenges, such as completing the level without getting hit. There are also fun unlockable mini-games, such as a Xevious clone.

Kirby Canvas Curse defined the DS when it came out in 2005. I think Kirby Mass Attack will help define the system's final mildly relevant holiday season.

Kirby Mass Attack is set for a September 19 release in North America, which is also the same day as Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2. It's also a week before Solatorobo comes out. Put Layton 4 out the next week and every awesome final generation DS game will come out in a two week span.

I'm sad that the developers couldn't (or just didn't)  implement an online multiplayer mode given that Starfox Command already had a rudimentary one in place.  If they had expanded the original multiplayer mode, it would have made all the difference in making the game a day one purchase.

I know that someone stated on RFN that dogfighting in the original Starfox 64 wasn't all that much fun, but my friends and I had hours of fun with it back in the day.  I used to dream of someday playing a sequel to Starfox or Rogue Squadron that allowed friends to cooperatively attack a fleet, a boss or complete a mission.  For example, it would have been great if you could have a multiplayer mode where you could either choose the role of the Star Fox or Star Wolf teams.

I feel a little sad that space fighters/shooters/simulators are generally out of vogue.  Star Fox was probably my most-played game during the N64 days.  I love that game; I used to play through it at least once a day after school.

Are there just two games you're looking forward to or do you plan to add more to this at some point?

I believe I made it decently clear throughout the posted pages that it's a work in progress, and not everything will be posted all at once, as evidenced by the fact that Star Fox 64 3D and Bit.Trip Complete/Saga were posted about a week apart.

Ah I see. I just found this today so I wasn't sure, and I didn't realize the Bit.Trip.Complete entry is the same one that was posted separately since I didn't click on it. Good to know.

AFAIK, in North America Layton still just has a "Fall 2011" release date.

It was a joke...
