Prince of Persia: The Fallen King

Post-Game

The inaugural edition of Extra Life looks at Ubisoft's most recent Prince of Persia DS game.

Prince of Persia: The Fallen King's controls are atrocious. Controlled almost exclusively with the stylus, it's imprecise, which is exactly the opposite of what you want in a Prince of Persia game or a platformer. It also doesn't help that everything in the game is done by tapping, and sections repeat in the same level.

The Fallen King's controls are on par with Scribblenauts' poor controls.

The terrible controls remind me of Scribblenauts' avatar control, except Scribblenauts isn't entirely focused on controlling a character in a platformer. I sincerely hope that the DS version of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands avoids using the stylus exclusively. (Note: From looking at preview materials, it looks like The Forgotten Sands only uses it for sand and time powers. Hopefully that is indeed the case. Unfortunately, the game is developed by the same team.)

The combat, never a focus in Prince of Persia games (and almost always never a strong part of them), is also poor, as it involves tapping and holding on the Prince to block, or tapping enemies to attack. Too bad it's tough to make sure your stylus is trained on the protagonist.

The magician ally brings a little bit of promise, but that quickly goes away as all this Magus character adds is another conduit for tapping and dragging things.

The next game can't be that bad. Right?

I don't have too much more to say about this game other than I understand why it was completely ignored after it came out. It just seems to be a bad game that misses the point of the touch screen on the DS. I can safely say that, after I put this feature to bed, I will never play this game again.
