Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Many years later, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is still an enjoyable journey from beginning to end.

The original Super Mario Bros. set a standard for the platforming genre and is still loved by many. Versions of the title have been released on many platforms, including the Virtual Console and the SNES' Super Mario All-Stars. The most unique specimen out of the bunch, however, is Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy Color. It was Nintendo's first attempt to bring a NES title over to a portable screen. While many things still remain fun, it is beginning to show its age.

What makes Super Mario Bros. Deluxe so special is that Nintendo didn't just port the game to the GBC, but added a lot of extra content. There is, of course, the Original 1985 version available, and here you can save at any time during the game. Famous glitches like the Minusworld are gone and more sound effects are added, so to say that it is the full old school experience is perhaps going a bit too far. There is also a challenge mode, in which you try to meet certain high scores and collect additional Red Coins and Yoshi Eggs. After meeting certain goals, you can unlock a modified version of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Not all the content of that game is included here and some changes were made to make it work better on the GBC. There are plenty of other tidbits to find, but I won't spoil them all here today.

Though there is a lot to enjoy in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, there are negative aspects as well. Multiplayer and the Game Boy Printer elements of the title are missing, with no effort to keep them in. It would have been amazing if you could save the printable banners or art on your SD card, but that sadly is not the case. Also, the aspect ratio takes some getting used to in this day and age. It is certainly nice that the game is pixel perfect with the NES version, but the zoomed in view can be troubling sometimes. These issues are worth considering, despite how much fun the whole ordeal is.

Summary

Pros
  • Much additional content
  • Plays perfectly fine
  • Still looks quite sharp
Cons
  • Versus mode and picture options missing
  • Zoomed in view is dated

Why is Nintendo so inconsistent with multi-player in their 3DS Virtual Console releases?  Ugh.

I already have Super Mario Bros as an ambassador, so although I will be picking this up for free as part of the Network ID promotion I'm not really anticipating it. Plus, as great as SMB was, I really have exhausted that game. Throwing additional coins and eggs into the mix really isn't a big draw for me.

What I wouldn't do for some interesting GBC and GBA games.

Recently I bought Mean Bean Machine Game Gear game with some extra points, I was stunned with the options and what this emulator can do. It blows Nintendo Virtual console games out of the water. its sad that this game would greatly benefit from just a rom dump and nintendo is not interested in going the exra mile.

Using the pritner optiions for facebook/twitter/miiverse would be great

It does suck that they just removed the versus mode and especially picture stuff. Even though I never had a Gameboy Printer, I liked looking at the pictures.

RodrigueFebruary 04, 2014

Oh and you got pictures as achievements essentially, so if they are completely gone it does take away some of the fun. If I remember correctly you got an enemy's picture for the first time you defeated it.

If it comes over I will still get it, it was one of the first games I played.

They could have just left the images in and removed the "print" button. I liked the two images you received for beating the Bowser in every world with fire power.

I actually did get to try this game's multiplayer once, and it was quite fun. Probably better than any other competitive mode in a Super Mario game.

Mm... Maybe I'll just purchase a used cart if they took things away....  :(

Are the options actually *removed* or do they just not work?  This would be the first GB/GBC game that I know of where the multiplayer/printer options were actually removed...

I would love to have this game again. Not sure if I got all of the pictures in the original cart.  Getting the high medals in the high score thing will work on your nerves though.....

The only time I beat Super Mario Bros. was via Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.

I HATED 8-3.

The pictures are still there, and the Print button is intact as well - it just doesn't do anything.
They could have done a Pokemon Snap and let you save the images to SD card or something, but you can still fill the gallery.

Hopefully, they will do Miiverse community for this.

If i am getting this right, i should get this for free which is cool.

I am mostly interested in (re-)playing lost levels. I wonder how small screen will affect it...
