Move the penguin to the goal and rank up those meters!

Petite Games is one of the more known entities on the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. They make smaller games like Toon Tanks and Midnight. Their games have been pretty hit and miss for me personally, though I’m always curious about what they will be doing next. The newest game with their name on it is Christmas Adventure of Rocket Penguin. The game is decent enough, but it doesn't offer much to keep players truly engaged.

In Christmas Adventure of Rocket Penguin, you will make lines on the touchscreen of the Wii U GamePad. Similar to Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, you don't take control over the character and simply steer him in the right direction. Where Rainbow Curse was still a platforming game at heart, this game compares more to an endless runner. You have to make lines to keep the penguin going and rack up more meters as he goes along.

This is easier said than done, considering you will need ink to keep making lines. The environment is filled with enemies and touching them will take a bit of ink away. By collecting presents though, your meter will slowly filled up and this will allow you to keep going. Similarly, if the penguin loses all of its momentum, it is game over as well. The trick is not simply to make straight lines, but to experiment and make the best out of it.

This is all entertaining for a little while, but there is not much to it. The enemies, the environment and music are always the same, which makes it all grow stale after a little bit. This doesn't change if you change between the Classic, Hard and Multiplayer modes, which is more heart wrenching. The worst of all is that the game doesn't have any leaderboards, so you can’t share your scores. You could post them to Miiverse obviously, but that isn't a viable alternative in my eyes.

Christmas Adventure of Rocket Penguin is just average. The gameplay mechanics are absolutely sound, but the game doesn't have much going for it. If there was more thought and care put into it, I am sure this would attract many who are searching for a cheap game. I wouldn't certainly say that they are asking too much, but the game doesn’t really stand out.
